Cardiff & Vale Action for Mental Health (cavamh).
As well as the work Nexus does, cavamh also works with the
voluntary sector through the Mental Health Forum and with people
using adult mental health services through the Sefyll project. In
each case we work to give those who want to be involved a say in
the way that services are run, planned and developed.
Usually at this time of year we send out membership forms to
everyone on our mailing lists - becoming a member is free and
shows support for the work we do.

COMMUNITY VOICE
PROJECT
May I take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jasmine Williams, I am known as
Jaz. I am a Service User Involvement Officer with the Alzheimer’s Society. I am working on the
Co-Creating Healthy Change , Community Voice Project.
The project has been funded by The Big Lottery. The aim of the project is to increase people’s
confidence, skills and knowledge, to enable them to contribute to the decision making process.
We are working in partnership with the Forget Me Not Chorus and NEXUS.
The Forget Me Not Chorus work with people living with dementia and their carers to enable
them through song and drama to tell their story.
NEXUS, comprises of a specialist team, who work with older people and those living with de-
mentia. They offer support to people enabling them to have a voice in service planning.
By meeting with people, the project aims to increase the confidence, skills and knowledge of
people living with dementia and their carers, to raise awareness of their actual needs, to com-
ment on existing services and have a voice in service planning and delivery. All responses will
be treated confidentially.
If you would be happy to meet with me and wish to arrange an appointment or if you require
further information concerning the project, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely, Jasmine Williams (Service user involvement Officer)

Co-Creating Healthy Change
In December 2012, Cardiff Third Sector Council received confirmation
from Big Lottery that they had been successful in securing funding to
run one of eleven Community Voice projects being delivered in Wales.
The Co-Creating Healthy Change project, which was launched by Mark
Drakeford, AM in 2013, is a four year Big Lottery funded health and
wellbeing project which aims to give communities a voice on the
services they use. The project is an exciting collaboration between ten
partners that brings together their diverse skills, experience and remits
to develop, and deliver, a multitude of forums, events, training
sessions and activities, enhancing the community voice in shaping
health and well-being service delivery. The portfolio reaches out to a
wide range of people, from those living with dementia or a learning
disability to single parents to young people who are not in education,
employment or training – all of these and others deserve to have a
voice and be involved in planning the services they rely on and use.
Over the lifetime of the portfolio, partners will each be running a
project focusing on a particular demographic of the Cardiff and Vale
population:
Displaced People In Action – Refugee and Asylum Seekers
Action in Caerau and Ely – Geographic Community of Ely and Caerau
Cardiff and Vale Action for Mental Health – Mental Health Service
Users
Hafal – Mental Health Carers
Alzheimer’s Society – Dementia and Carers
Gingerbread – Lone Parent Families
Media Academy Cardiff – NEET Young People
Cardiff Third Sector Council – Long Term Conditions
Diverse Cymru – Seldom Heard Voices
Cardiff People First and Vale People First – Learning Disabilities
These ten projects, as a portfolio, will work together to achieve four
main outcomes:
For carers of o lder people wi th menta l hea lth needs Page 5
Co-Creating Healthy Change cont.
People with long term conditions, disabilities and mental health
needs will have increased skills to engage and be involved in plan-
ning, designing and delivering services to meet their needs.
People facing inequalities will have the confidence and clearer path-
ways to voice their needs and support the design of services that
meet their complex needs.
Service users will have increased knowledge of commissioning and
procurements strategies and be able to shape the design and de-
livery of services. The most vulnerable and hard to reach commu-
nities will have improved routes for communication with public
sector commissioning officers.
Increased voice and influence of people, communities and third sec-
tor in health and social care services across Cardiff and Vale.
During the lifetime of the portfolio we anticipate working alongside and
in conjunction with community organisations to strengthen the influ-
ence and impact of the portfolio.
With two years ahead of us in the project we thought it would be a
good time to celebrate our achievements with a New Year New You
Healthy Change event at the Cardiff Story Museum. This FREE commu-
nity event took place on Saturday 24th January, and was attended by
over 100 community members. It was a fabulous occasion for all the
family.
People were able to participate in games organised by the Alzheimer’s
Society that keep the mind active, the Exercise Referral Group were
also present undertaking blood pressure checks, and community mem-
bers were able to find out about ‘Dry January’ and how to enjoy alco-
hol safely through information provided by the Health Board. There
were also arts and crafts and fruit kebab-making activities for the chil-
dren as a fun way to introduce a broader, healthier diet and if that
wasn’t exciting enough 32 people got to enjoy a free massage treat-
ment or complimentary eyebrow threading after giving their views on
health and well-being services.

New Year New You Healthy Change Jaz Williams, Alzheimer’s Society
Through our media promotion and energetic activity on the day we be-
lieve we were able to achieve our objective of raising greater aware-
ness of CCHC within the community. We would like to think that we are
becoming more recognised as a viable pathway for engagement on
health and well-being related matters and that this will grow through
our future activity.

1. What difference has the current ring fence arrangements made to improved outcomes?
2. How could arrangements be changed to provide a clear and consistent link between expenditure and improved outcomes?

Wales Audit Office study on Independence of Older People
‘I am writing to you to inform you of an ongoing Wales Audit Of-
fice national project which is looking at the issue of how local
councils support the independence of older people. The main
study question that we are seeking to answer is:
Is there evidence that councils are working effectively to
manage the demand for social care and health services for
older people by supporting them to live independently at
home?
There are a number of aspects of the study that we would like to
bring to your attention:
1 We have a survey for older people to give us their views.
That survey can be accessed on line via the following microsite:
http://helpsurvey.wao.gov.uk/
http://arolwghelp.wao.gov.uk/
Should you prefer a hard copy version with pre-paid envelope,
please contact me and we will arrange delivery to you.
2 We will be seeking to work with local council partner or-
ganisations to obtain their views on the effectiveness of local ar-
rangements that support older people’s independence. This work
is planned to be undertaken using an online survey.
Should you wish to discuss the project in more detail, please do
not hesitate to contact [email protected].’

£70m investment in the Welsh NHS will help
reform services – Mark Drakeford
A £70m investment in the Welsh NHS will go towards developing local health services, integrating health and social care and delivering improvements to cancer, cardiac and stroke services, Health and Social Services Minister, Mark Drakeford announced today (Wednesday
28 January 2015).
Following the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement in December, Finance Minister Jane Hutt announced that the £70m being made available to the Welsh Government by the UK
Government in 2015-16 would be allocated to the Welsh NHS.
The £70m is part of the extra £295m being invested by the Welsh Government in health and social care in 2015-16. This means the budget for Health and Social Services in Wales in 2015-16 will be £6.7bn – the highest it’s ever been, and will
account for 43% of the total Welsh Government budget.
The £70m investment will go towards:
£30m to develop primary care services across Wales: this will build on the Welsh Government’s primary care plan to shift more services from hospitals and improve access to preventative, integrated community, primary and social care services. £20m to take forward projects funded by the Intermediate Care Fund this year that have proven to be effective across community and acute environments, linking out-of-hospital care and social care to strengthen the resilience of the unscheduled care system.
For carers of o lder people wi th menta l hea lth needs Page 13
£10m to implement measures in ten key delivery plans including cancer, cardiac, diabetes, mental health, stroke care, and respiratory health, to take forward service reconfiguration. £10m for the creation of an “efficiency through technology” fund, which will accelerate the adoption of new technologies, and new ways of working which drive efficiencies in the Welsh NHS.
Professor Drakeford said:
“The £70m additional funding for the Welsh NHS in 2015-16 will go to develop specific projects that will have a real impact on
high demand services and on reforming our health service.
“Moving care closer to people’s homes is a priority for me, so we will invest £30m to develop primary care services across Wales. £20m will be invested in community-based services that help keep people out of hospital and in their own home. This
will help ease pressures on our hospital-based services.
“We’re also investing £10m to deliver our plans in areas such as cancer, cardiac, diabetes and stroke care, ensuring the NHS delivers the services necessary to support people suffering with
these conditions.
“Over two years we’ve increased investment in our Welsh NHS by more than half a billion pounds. This means the total budget for Health and Social Services in Wales in 2015-16 will be £6.7bn, a record high. This demonstrates our clear commitment
to a sustainable health and social care system in Wales.”

Short listing/Interviewing for Clinical Psychology
Dear All,
At the last meeting in Clinical Pyschology, I was tasked with pre-
senting a paper to the next full meeting about payment.
My plan is to contact as many service users and carers to seek
their opinions about the rates of pay for short-listing candidates for in-
terview and for attendance at interviews.
It would be really helpful if carers who have been or are involved
in short listing and/or interviewing would contact me with their views.
When I come to write the paper, no names will be mentioned. I
may pick out some quotes, if they seem apposite.
If you are interested in interviewing, please call Helen at Nexus.
Many thanks for your help,
Best wishes,
Gwyneth Statham, Service User Representative.
