You are a college student in Charleston, South Carolina in early 1861. Seven southern states have left the Union and formed their own government. All-out war seems unavoidable. Your friends have begun to volunteer for either the Union army or the Confederate forces. You are torn between loyalty to your home state and to the United States.

Would you join the Union or the Confederate army?Give at least 2 reasons and support your decision

with facts from your reading.

Fort Sumter – federal outpost in Charleston, South Carolina, that was attacked by Confederate troops, beginning the Civil War.

Border States – slave states that stayed in the Union: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri.

Winfield Scott – commanded U.S. army at the outset of the Civil War and developed the 3-part strategy for the North called the “Anaconda” plan.

Cotton Diplomacy – idea that Great Britain & France would support the Confederate due to their need for cotton to supply the textile industry.

Inaugurated on March 4, 1861.

Encouraged Constitutional Amendments for slavery.

Condemned the Southern right to secede.

Vowed to protect Federal property.

Promised to not attack the South first.
