Mastering the Art of Self-Promotion

“Effective self-promotion lies somewhere between being a

wallflower and a flaming narcissist.

Find the sweet spot.”

Presentation Notes
Self–promotion. It’s the ultimate dilemma for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and individuals. You don’t want to be pushy salesman … but you don’t have a marketing department like Apple. I mean, if you don’t tell people about your product, service, or idea … who will? Self–promotion is a requirement, but there are so many areas where you can go wrong that it becomes difficult to stay true to yourself. What you need are networking tips that actually work. The good news? It is possible to self–promote without ruining your reputation. Here are several ways to self–promote that will always work and will never come across as sleazy. Then there are times when you just have to brag on yourself a little bit. If you do something really great, talk about it. Just talk about it to the right people and make sure it is, in fact, remarkable. The right people will be energized by your success, not turned off by your obvious self-promotion.
Page 5: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

What is the Definition of “Self-Promotion”? To publicize, advertise, promote, or sell one’s

own features and benefits in order to achieve personal and professional goals.

To attempt to further, advance, foster, boost, support, or to advocate for the fulfillment of one’s own needs and personal & professional goals.

To talk up, hype, tout, plug, or sing praises for one’s own features and benefits for the purpose of achieving personal and professional goals.

Page 6: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

What is “Self-Promoting”?

An individual using any of these marketing techniques to promote their own personal & professional features and benefits to their targeted market of consumers.

Advertising Personal Selling Relationship Building Public Relations Publicity Word-of-Mouth Promotions

Presenter
Presentation Notes
To publicize, advertise, or sell yourself / your skill set / your benefits Advertising = to pay for non-personal communication through various media in the an effort to affect the sale of products and services. Personal Selling = the face-to-face presentation and promotion of goods and services. Public Relations = evaluating and attempting to affect public attitude by informing the public about the seller’s features and benefits. Publicity = any form of non-paid advertising through the media which promotes information about the seller’s features and benefits to the public and is not controlled by the seller. Sales Promotion = the short-term promotional tools used to stimulate consumers to purchase products and services. i.e. SAMPLING--Free demonstrations / free Customer Needs Analysis / Free 30 minute consultation / Discounts for Students or Seniors / Free speaking engagements Word of Mouth = people / consumers telling each other about the products and services that they have purchased.
Page 7: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

How is Self-Promotion Beneficial to You? Consumers are informed

about your personal features and benefits.

You can personally explain the value, results, and utility that you offer.

You are personally in control of the message that consumers receive about you (mostly).

You can adjust and tailor your message; as needed.

You will develop credibility

and trusting relationships with your targeted consumers.

Enthusiasm for your personal brand is established.

Consumers will remember you and your message and will be motivated to make a purchase from you.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Can be expensive but usually worth the investment. Also mostly tax-deductible. Check with your accountant.
Page 8: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

What are the Goals of “Self-Promotion”?

1. To inform and remind your target market group of consumers about your personal and professional features and benefits.

2. To persuade targeted consumers that your features will be a benefit to them.

3. To motivate targeted consumers to purchase your products or services.

4. To promote yourself effectively in a manner that does not make you seem arrogant or conceited.

Page 9: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

Mastering the Art of Self-Promotion

STEPS IN THE PROCESS 1. Develop a healthy sense of self-confidence. 2. Create your own unique personal brand to

promote. 3. Promote yourself (without sounding arrogant). 4. Use the tools available to you. 5. Continuously improve your process. 6. Reap the rewards.

Page 10: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

Developing Self-Confidence

STEP 1: Develop a healthy level of

self-confidence

You must believe in yourself.

Confidence is contagious.

Confidence is a “self-fulfilling prophecy” .

Realize the value that you bring to the world

Believe in yourself—or no one else will believe in you.

You must adopt a positive attitude for self-promotion.

“Fake it until you make it.”

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Confidence is a self-fulfilling prophecy--“Fake it until you make it” ---“Act brave—be brave” You must overcome shyness and lack of self-confidence. You must adopt the ‘right’ attitude to be able to successfully ‘self-promote’. Be open to continuously improving your skills Be fearless and creative--be willing to think ‘outside of the box’ Do not fear failure or be afraid of mistakes--apologize, learn, adapt, and try again Over-prepare for stressful situations Is this something that you genuinely want to promote? If not, why are you doing it? We’re all looking for a story we can follow: a product we can trust, a person we can believe in. Genuine enthusiasm and excitement shows that you are that person. You’re the story they have been waiting for. People naturally gravitate towards stories that are promoted with passion and enthusiasm. It’s the energy that draws people in. If you don’t believe in your product, service, or idea … how is anyone else supposed to believe in it?
Page 11: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

How do You Develop Your Self-Confidence? Conduct a Self-Analysis:

What are your three most relevant strengths?

What are your three most relevant differentiating features?

How you would benefit any organization to which you belonged?

What traits or talents do you possess that make you different or exceptional?

Page 12: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

Developing Self-Confidence Define yourself in terms of your: Education & Training Knowledge Abilities & Talents Transferable Skills Functional Skills Experiences Personality Traits Extracurricular Activities Professional & Social Affiliations Personal Style Personal Values & Passions

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You must demonstrate that you have faith in yourself. If you don’t trust yourself—why would anyone else trust you? If you do not have confidence in yourself—why would anyone else have confidence in you? Do your market research---what KSA’s are valued in your field now? In the future? What do you do the best? What are you REALLY good at doing? Focus on those skills and the features and benefits associated with those valuable KSA’s –build your brand around those KSA’s / Features and Benefits . Build your Elevator Speech around the same. Your job is to figure out your super power--what sets you apart--and do it better than anyone else. If you're really good at something, people will flock to you for that skill. It may not be verbalized to you, but it will be evident by the sheer number of people you have knocking on your door.
Page 13: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

What is a Personal Brand? STEP 2: Creating a Personal Brand A Brand =

The name, term, or symbol that identifies one firm’s products and services and sets them apart from the competition’s products and services

Brand You =

The unique identity, image, and coherent marketing message that sets you apart from your competition

The story that people tell about you

Page 14: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

What are the benefits of “Brand You”?

You understand your strengths and can easily differentiate yourself from others.

You understand the utility that your features & benefits bring to both your personal and professional lives.

You have a strong, unique identity that you can communicate to advance both your personal and professional goals.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The number one way to become an amazing self–promoter is to build something that promotes itself. If you actually solve a real need, then people will talk about it. If you actually help someone achieve a goal, then people will talk about it. If you actually make people happy, then people will talk about it. In the beginning, nobody will know about your product no matter how great it is, but it’s so much easier to gain a following and become a successful self–promoter if you create a product, service, or idea that speaks for itself

Personal Branding Worksheet 1. What are your vision and purpose? 2. What are your values? 3. What are your passions? 4. What are your top goals for the next year, 2 years, and 5

years? 5. What are your top brand attributes? 6. What are your core strengths or motivated skills? 7. Get feedback from those who know you best – at work,

at home, anywhere. 8. Do a SWOT analysis (Strengths / Weakness /

Opportunities / Threats) 9. Who is your target audience? 10.Who is your competition in the marketplace and what

differentiates you from them?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
1. What are your vision and purpose? Look externally at the bigger picture of your vision for the world, and then internally at how you might help the world realize your vision. Think about one world problem you would like to see solved or one area of life that you want to see transformed or improved. This is your vision. What role might you play in making your vision happen? This is your purpose. 2. What are your values? Your values are your guiding principles – things like: Balance, being the best, agility, calmness, challenge, decisiveness, perseverance, drive, honesty, integrity, pragmatism, sensitivity, structure, teamwork, sharing, vitality, zeal. 3. What are your passions? What do you most enjoy doing – in your personal life and work life? Think about the activities, interests, or conversational topics that fascinate and energize you. Your passions make you get out of bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning or get you talking enthusiastically with others. How do your passions converge with what you are best at doing? 4. What are your top goals for the next year, 2 years, and 5 years? Work on projecting what you intend to accomplish so you can put together a strategic action plan to get there. 5. What are your top brand attributes. What 3 or 4 adjectives best describe the value you offer? What words do you use to define your personality? Once you pinpoint what you feel are the right kinds of words, it’s a good idea to consult a thesaurus to precisely nail the exact words. Here are some possibilities, but don’t limit yourself to these: Collaborative, resilient, forward-focused, risk-taking, connected, international, visionary, diplomatic, intuitive, precise, enterprising, ethical, genuine, accessible. 6. What are your core strengths or motivated skills? In what functions and responsibilities do you excel? For what things are you the designated “go-to” person? What gap would your company be faced with if you left suddenly? The possibilities are endless, but here are a few suggestions: Analyzing, collaborating, leading, delegating, empowering others, forecasting, crunching numbers, anticipating risk, mentoring, visioning, selling, innovating, managing conflict, defining needs, writing, listening, communicating. 7. Get feedback from those who know you best – at work, at home, anywhere. The true measure of your brand is the reputation others hold of you in their hearts and minds. Notice how they introduce you to others. Ask them what your top brand attributes and core strengths are. How does your self-assessment jibe with their feedback? The 360° Reach Personal Brand Assessment (http://www.reachcc.com/360reach), a confidential, web-based tool that collects anonymous 360-degree feedback in real time from your choice of respondents, is a good option to accomplish this step and the basic account is free. 8. Do a SWOT analysis (Strengths – Weaknesses – Opportunities – Threats). Strengths and weaknesses are internal, and speak to your potential value to an employer. Opportunities and threats are external, and help you foresee what you’re facing in next career steps. SWOT is an invaluable personal branding exercise that also helps prepare you for interviewing and future career growth and stability. 9. Who is your target audience? Determine where you want to fit in (kind of job position and industry). Learn what decision makers in that field are looking for when they’re assessing candidates. Create your personal brand messaging around what keywords and content will attract them. Find out where those decision makers hang out, position yourself in front of them, and capture their attention. 10. Who is your competition in the marketplace and what differentiates you from them? What do the people competing for the same jobs as you typically have to offer? What is it about you that makes you the best hiring choice? What added value do you bring to the table that no one else does? Bottom Line: The work involved in uncovering and defining your personal brand may seem daunting, but your efforts will benefit you immeasurably. In job search, defining and communicating your personal brand can help pre-qualify you as a good fit and strategically position you to land your next great gig faster.

The best place to start networking is close to home. Begin with your family and close friends. Then focus on your current and past co-workers, work colleagues, employers, fellow classmates or alumni, club members, and members of your religious organization with which you may be affiliated. Really—anyone you meet can become a part of your network. You must be prepared for opportunities to network and stay open to those opportunities at all times.—You never know who you may run into randomly that may be an important contact. Post your own infomercial / how to video on You Tube. LinkedIn is by far the #1 spot for job seekers, those currently employed, marketers who are looking to build lists and salespeople who are seeking out new clients. With 35 million + users, including recruiters and job seekers, LinkedIn is quite a hot spot. Of course, due to the current state of the economy, it’s simple to understand why LinkedIn is more popular than ever. The problem is that most job seekers don’t optimize their profile, cultivate their network, join and participate in groups, use applications and exchange endorsements. That is basically everything you should be doing in a nutshell. When you search for a job, recognize who in your network might help you get to the hiring manager. You’re given 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree connections on LinkedIn that you should be using to secure a job openings / business meetings. Benefits of using Linkedin.com include: Managing the information that’s publicly available about you. Managing your professional contacts in a single site. Recommending and being recommended by people in your network and connecting with those in other networks. Finding people in your network to collaborate with and helping to you grow your business. Discovering inside connections that can help you land jobs and close deals. And, Posting and distributing job listings to find the best talent for your company.

Self-Promotion using the “Intro Speech”

The “Value Proposition” Statement (A.K.A. “The Elevator Speech”) A summary statement

that describes how you or your company’s unique set of knowledge, skills, abilities, & experiences would benefit a potential contact, employer, or client.

Use to introduce yourself / your company and to build a solid foundation for networking with potential employers and clients.

Develop, write, and rehearse, the introduction so that it sounds natural.

The speech should be concise and last about 30 seconds to one minute.

Stay relevant and keep it appropriate for the venue, situation, and audience.

Page 30: Career webinar amber tb - mastering the art of self-promotion

The “Intro Speech”

The introduction should include a combination of the following four elements:

1. Explain who you are. 2. Explain what you do. 3. Explain why and how your

offer is special. 4. Explain which specific

type of referral for you are looking.

State the name of the company that your work for and your area of specialty or expertise.

State the name of the school you attend and your major and minor courses of study.

Describe the relevant differentiating features and strengths that you possess.

Describe in terms of features how you would benefit an employer or client.

Describe the benefits of the products / services that your company offers or sells.

Ask for what you want or need.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The ’elevator speech’ introduction should include a combination of four of the following elements: 1. Explain who you are: State your First and Last Name and Job Title State your Education/Training /Specialization/Expertise 2. Explain what you do: Work, School, Internship, & Volunteer Experience 3. Explain why you are different: Area of Expertise / Specialization Unique Personality Traits & Characteristics Years working in the Industry / Experience Level Relevant Background Information—specific to purpose 4. Politely request what you want / need. Ask permission for the opportunity to follow-up with the contact at a later time. THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO ASK SOMEONE FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE IS TO ASK THE QUESTION, “WHO DO YOU KNOW THAT CAN……..?” This way, you are not putting the contact on-the-spot / putting them into an awkward position. They now have the option to say, “No, I cannot help you. I don’t know anyone that can BLANK.” Or, They could say, “Yes, I do know someone that can BLANK. Let me connect you with that person.” OR , they can choose to say, “Yes, I can do BLANK, and I would be glad to help you.” An Example Elevator Speech: “Good afternoon!” (Extend your hand to greet the person. Shake their hand and give them your business card.) “It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Amber Travis-Ballinas, Chair of the School of Business at ITT Technical Institute. I manage the faculty, students, and programs of the School of Business at ITT Tech’s Austin campus. I specialize in Business and Project Management. I am currently searching for qualified adjunct faculty lecturers to teach for the SOB. Who do you know that might be interested and available to be our guest speaker in December?” wait for answer “May I contact you later this week to get the contact information for that person?” Be sure to thank them for their time and remind them how much you enjoyed meeting them. ***Sometimes this may be presented as a monologue and other times it may be squeezed naturally into a conversation—in a dialogue form.

Self-Promotion using the Portfolio

Consumers Want Proof – Not Just Talk. “A picture is worth a thousand

words.”

Back up your verbal claims with tangible evidence.

Let your portfolio “speak” on your behalf.

Three Types of Portfolios: A formal portfolio (hard copy) An informal or ‘disposable’

portfolio An electronic portfolio /

website

Choosing a Portfolio Format: Analyze the type of materials

that you wish to display in the portfolio

Identify the best format to accurately portray your work and other materials

Research your industry to determine what is appropriate and cutting edge / “up-to-date”

Presenter
Presentation Notes
A Career Portfolio makes you stand out amongst the competition What type of product/skill am I offering my potential employers? How can I display this product/skill to them in a complete and professional manner? Does this presentation format meet industry expectations? You have identified the presentation format, contents, and marketing path for your portfolio…you must make sure that it is “user friendly” Depending on your presentation type, examples of common pitfalls include: Long downloading time Confusing order of materials Incomplete work Incompatible presentation format (i.e. – Mac vs. PC)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Post a “How To” video on YouTube.com YouTube.com Jobster isn’t spoken about nearly enough, yet it is a powerful platform for networking with employers who are offering jobs. You can upload your resume, embed your video resume, showcase links to your site, your picture and tag your skills, which is a unique differentiator. You can search for open positions and see who the person is who posted the job. Then you can add them to your network and connect with them to find out more about the position. VisualCV understands the importance of personal branding in a job search. Instead of a traditional resume, you get your own branded webpage, where you can add video, audio, images, graphs, charts, work samples, presentations and references. VisualCVs not only let you stand out from the crowd, but communicate your value in a way that’s not possible with static text. After you’ve created your VisualCV, you can display it publicly or privately, email it to a recruiter, save it as a PDF or forward the URL, which will rank high for your name. On the site, you can search for jobs and apply directly using your VisualCV account. JobFox, like online dating, tries to pair you up with a job that best fits you. Their differentiator is their “Mutual Suitability SystemTM” that enables them to match your wants and needs to those of employers to find the best relationship. The system learns about your skills, experiences, and goals and then presents you with jobs. Then there’s the “Jobfox Intro,” where both the applicant and company get emails to encourage the connection. Just like VisualCV, you get your own branded website, with a personal web address to send to employers. JobFox was created by Rob McGovern, the founder of Careerbuilder.com. Campus2Careers is very similar to Jobster but created specifically to serve those searching for entry level jobs.
