Photographer

Basic Description

Portrait photographers take pictures of individuals or groups of people and usually work in their own studios. Photographers who specialize in weddings, religious ceremonies, or school photographs may work on location.

Photographers create permanent visual images for an exceptionally wide range of creative, technical and documentary purposes. A professional photographer usually works to a brief set by the client or employer. Examples of image content include wedding, family and baby photographs, fashion, food, architecture, corporate photography, war zones and landscapes. Photographers use their technical expertise, creativity, and composition skills to produce and preserve images that visually tell a story or record an event.

Why I’m interested in this career

I’m interested in this type of career because ever since I was little I’ve been very photogenic and enjoyed being in front and behind the camera. Then as I grew older I would take my mom’s camera and take pictures of my family on holidays. I still enjoy it today. My cousin is also a photographer and she has her own business, so I ask her about the photography business a lot.

10 Characteristics

Values: smart, patient, caring, outgoing, over all good with people, skill, interest and hard work

Tasks & Responsibilities:

- Market and advertise services to attract clients

- Analyze and decide how to compose a subject

- Use various photographic techniques and equipment

- Capture subjects in commercial-quality photographs

- Enhance the subject’s appearance with natural or artificial light

- Use photo enhancing software

Working with data-people-things: Photographers need to

be able to interact with people on the job because they need to get good pictures of them. They also need to be good with the equipment to get the perfect shot. (people & things)

10 Characteristics

Working Environment: Working conditions for photographers

vary considerably depending on their specialty. Some travel for photo shoots; others work in their own studios. Still others work in laboratories and use microscopes to photograph subjects.

Working Hours: Portrait photographers typically work 40 hours per week, with many operating within the conventional 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday schedule. However, most portrait studios are open evenings and weekends to accommodate clients who work or attend school during the week. Because of this, some photographers have a schedule that includes nights and weekends.

10 Characteristics

Aptitudes & Abilities: What successful photographers have in common is the ability to "see" a photograph; to look at a scene and know what will work in a photograph and what won’t; they also have technical knowledge about how to use a camera and, nowadays, a computer. Photography is a profession that requires an eye for detail and the skill to capture it. They need to be strong (to lift the equipment) & be able to be on their feet if needed.

Education & Training: A Bachelor of Arts in Photography provides more options for a career and for advancement; bachelor's degrees typically include art, business, marketing and other courses to round out one's education. A polished portfolio, which is often a requirement for graduation, is another benefit of a bachelor's degree program. Entry-level freelance or portrait photographers need technical proficiency. Some complete a college degree or vocational training programs. Photographers may start out as assistants to experienced photographers. Assistants acquire the technical knowledge needed to be a successful photographer and also learn other skills necessary to run a portrait or commercial photography business.

Salary & Benefits: Photographers have an average annual income of $32,000 as of 2013, according to the job website Indeed. Based on a 40-hour work week, that equates to $15.38 per hour. If you work for a studio and you are not working for yourself, you likely will get additional benefits. These can range from 401K benefits, to health benefits, time off and pensions. These last components entirely depend on the firm or organization that employs you.

Career Outlook: Over the five years to November 2018, the number of job openings for Photographers is expected to be below average (between 5,001 and 10,000). Job openings can arise from employment growth and people leaving the occupation. Employment of photographers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations.

International Career Outlook: Most likely they wouldn’t need a

photographer internationally at times. They might need pictures in other countries for reports.

Pediatrician

Basic Description

A pediatrician, like most doctors, is required to be on call for emergencies and sicknesses that their patients experience. In addition, the job requires an ability to relate to children on a personal level in order to ask questions and diagnose sicknesses quickly and correctly. A pediatrician’s job description includes many factors and requirements of certain skills to be successful as a doctor. Another part of the job is providing care from birth to early adulthood; pediatricians are concerned with the health of infants, children, and teenagers. They specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of ailments specific to young people and track their patients’ growth to adulthood.

Why I’m interested in this career

I’m interested in this career because I enjoy helping and working with kids at young ages. I like helping people in need, so by being able to do this job I would get to help the children, but also spend time with them. I would get to fix them and see them smile when I’m done. I babysit my cousins all the time, so I feel I’m good with kids.

10 Characteristics

Values: communication, good vision, good listening, patient, friendly, social

Tasks & Responsibilities: As a pediatrician, my main occupational tasks would involve providing medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults. I would be responsible for examining, diagnosing, and treating children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. I would also administer the many immunizations that are available to protect children from diseases such as hepatitis B, diphtheria, polio, measles, and the mumps. Routine check-ups would also be part of my common tasks list, with the intent of monitoring a child's growth and development from birth to adulthood.

Working with data-people-things: Pediatricians work with people, mostly infants/young children, all the time. They also work with things including all their equipment.

10 Characteristics

Working Environment: Pediatricians work indoors in places that are well lit and comfortable. Most pediatricians work in an office environment, mostly in group practice, where several physicians join together to practice. Pediatricians also commonly work solo or in two-physician practices.

Working Hours: They usually work around 7am-5pm every

day. The average pediatrician works an average of 50 hours per week.' This includes time spent in the office, visiting patients in the hospital, doing paperwork and being on call after-hours.

10 Characteristics

Aptitudes & Abilities: Communication is important to patient care in any environment, but especially in the dynamic of the doctor-patient and doctor-family relationship. Pediatricians need to be able to effectively engage small children in conversation to get them to open up about feelings and concerns. Even with good communication skills, pediatricians often need strong interpersonal intuition when working with kids. The ability to detect from a child's body language and mannerisms that something is wrong is critical in detecting more subtle or emerging health problems. Pediatricians are problem solvers. They identify what is wrong with a child and come up with appropriate treatment solutions. They need to be on their feet a lot and in good health.

Education & Training: A doctor that works in pediatrics is required to complete eight years of schooling in addition to residency requirements. Prospective pediatricians need to meet extensive educational requirements, often beginning with a bachelor's degree in a science-related area, such as biology or chemistry. After finishing their undergraduate programs, they must complete medical school and a pediatric residency before seeking licensure and specialty certification. I would also need to go to Medical School for several years.

10 Characteristics

Salary & Benefits: The BLS also reported that the average yearly salary was $170,530 for general pediatricians in May 2013. I would get benefits of having health insurance, life insurance, and vacation time when needed.

Career Outlook: In addition to procreation, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the job field of pediatricians could see a 22% increase from 2008 to 2018. The bureau also states that many facilities are predicted to have openings for pediatricians from doctor’s offices to hospitals to urgent care centers. These statistics foresee strong growth for the field of pediatrics, giving pediatricians an assurance of an excellent career outlook for the present time, as well as the next five years.

International Career Outlook: I don’t think I would need to travel internationally as a pediatrician. I would just work around home and if I needed to go somewhere around the world I would.
