Language and Literacy Objectives • Discuss ways to locate additional employment related information.• Locate information regarding job requirements and licensing agencies.• Summarize and compare information gathered about job requirements.• Make an oral presentation or write an article or letter explaining the

requirements of one occupation of interest to the student.• Research educational and job opportunities and resources using the Internet

or other resources.

Testing Task 1: Job Chart (up to 14 points possible) Given a choice of 8 possible occupations, each student will choose 3 and go online to complete a chart comparing categories of information about the occupations, such as:

• Job responsibilities• Job requirements (education, licensing, prior experience)• Additional employment related information (e.g. salary, skills needed)

Testing Task 2: Oral Presentation (up to 26 points possible)

Content (20 points possible) Each student will choose an occupation to research and deliver an oral report to the class. The report should include topics such as: • Job responsibilities• Job requirements (education, license, prior experience)• Expected salary range, benefits, skills• Additionally information from an oral interview with a person working in the occupation

Visual Aid (4 points possible) Each student will make a relevant, appropriate, easy-to-read Power Point presentation.

Effective Speech and Body Language (2 points possible) Each student will use effective voice and body language and will refer to the visual throughout the report while maintaining some eye contact with the audience.

Answers must be correct and comprehensible to count.

32 points are needed to pass for Level 4 (Intermediate High) students

Level 4 Project Guideline

Career Path Presentation Length of presentation: 8 minutes

Instructions:

1. In English, research a career path which is interesting to you.2. Find at least 3 different sources of information (at least one of which is an oral

interview). For example, an interview with a nurse, a book about nursing careers,and a website that discusses careers in nursing.

3. Paraphrase the information you find into a logical presentation. Be sure toinclude education requirements, salary range, career satisfaction, and workexperience needed.

4. Create a PowerPoint presentation which illustrates what the steps are to amanagerial or advanced position in that career. Use a maximum of 12 slidesnoting all 3 sources.

5. Provide your classmates and teacher with a one-page handout/outline of yourpresentation. Summarize the information and speak clearly during yourpresentation. Note the time limit.

6. Be prepared to answer follow up questions from the audience.

Assessment: Scores of 3, 2, or 1 point will be given in each category below:

3 pts. = High (above the expected level) Pass = 14 points or more 2 pts. = Mid (at the right level) No Pass = less than 14 points 1 pt. = Low (needs some improvement)

Each box is scored. All boxes need to be filled in. Up to two points are added for neatness and legibility. Remind students to paraphrase as much as possible, esp. job responsibilities.

Subject: Career Path Presentations

1) When giving points on presentations, whole numbers should be used instead of half points.

2) We should focus on content when grading. As indicated on the rubric, no points should be assignedfor students' grammar and pronunciation. Evaluation and comments for grammar and pronunciation should be indicated separately as designated on the back side of the rubric.

3) It is not necessary for students to use specific citation formats (MLA, APA, etc.) when reportingsources of information. They should simply list sources (e.g. interviewee's name, websites, and book/magazine titles) on their PowerPoint slide similar to the example below:
