    1. HOWDOICHOOSEACAREER? Think about your interests, hobbies,abilities and

    values.Whatdoyou enjoydoing?

    How doyou spendyour sparetime?What are you good at?

    What subjectsdoyouenjoyat

    school? What is important to

    you? Thinking about and

    answering these questionswill start

    givingyousomeclues.REMEMBER:Youarelikely

    to have several careers in your lifetimeso only

    thinkintermsofthenextfiveyearsorso.

    Thinkalsoaboutthe typeofstudyyouwouldlike

    to be involved in after completing school. For

    example,wouldyouliketoearnmoneywhileyou

    qualify?Areyougoodwithpracticalthings?Inthat

    case, consider an apprenticeship or traineeship

    (egtobecomeacarpenterorhairdresser).

    Wouldyouliketostudyasubject(s)indepthand

    at a high level for 3 or 4 years? In that case,

    consider a university degree (eg to become an

    accountantoranurse).

    Wouldyouliketostudyforayearorso?Inthat

    caseconsideraTAFEcertificateordiploma (egin

    childcareorhospitality).Remember,thisisonlya

    start.Youcanoftenmove(articulate)fromTAFEto

    university,gaining creditsas yougo. Conversely,

    someuniversitydegreeholderslaterstudyatTAFE

    (NOTE: government wont fund qualifications at

    thesameorlowerlevelthanyoualreadyhave;eg,

    if you have a university degree, the government

    willnotassistwiththecostofaTAFEdiploma).

    4. FOLIO PREPARATION AND CAREERDISCOVERY COURSES RMIT runs short

    courses which can improve your skills, help

    with career decisions and prepare you for

    future folio presentations. They

    cover areas like: architectural

    5. UNIVERSITYOFMELBOURNENEWSFirst preference applications for the Universitys

    Arts and Science degreeswerethemost popular

    coursesinVictoriainthe2012courseapplications.

    The courses received 2829 and 2365 first

    preferences respectively. Commerce was fourth

    with 1421 first preferences. The clearly-in ATAR

    for Arts was 91.4, for Science, 91.95, and for

    Commerce,95.00 .

    courses with less than that for reasons such as

    NURSING OFFERED AT CLAYTON IN 2013Monash now teaches nursing at the Clayton

    2013? If so, you will need to complete the

    9. CONSIDERED COMPLETING A PRE-APPRENTICESHIP? Preapprenticeshipcourses

    areofferedinareaslikeplumbing,electrical,

    carpentryandautomotive.Completedbefore

    attempting to gain an apprenticeship, they

    cover somemodulesnormally

    coveredintheapprenticeship.

    They usually take about four

    months and assist students

    gaining an apprenticeship,

    withmanyemployers expectingapplicantsto

    havedoneone.TheycanbedoneatTAFE,or

    aresometimesoffered(atleastinpart)inVET

    courses in school (eg VET Building and

    Construction).
