A Planet in crisis. Earth in intensive care. Human-made environmental and social catastrophes are threatening to render the planet uninhabitable. The situation is critical, and dominated by the interests of capital. Architecture and urbanism are caught up in the crisis.

But it could all be different. The Critical Care exhibition, first shown at the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W), presents 21 current projects from around the world, including earthquake-proof and sustainable village development in China, flood protection through traditional low-carbon construction techniques in Pakistan and Bangladesh, the diverse con- versions of modernist buildings in Brazil and Europe, an ecological community land trust in Puerto Rico, and new concepts for public spaces and mixed urban districts in Vienna, London and Nairobi. On the basis of these and other projects, Critical Care proves that architecture and urbanism can bring the planet back to life.The repair of the future has begun.

Planet in der Krise. Die Erde in der Notaufnahme. Menschengemachte ökologische und soziale Katastrophen drohen den Planeten unbewohn-bar zu machen. Die Lage ist kritisch, und dominiert von den Interessen des Kapitals sind Architektur und Urbanismus in die Krise verstrickt.

Doch es geht auch anders, wie die Ausstellung Critical Care des Archi-tekturzentrums Wien (Az W) anhand von 21 aktuellen internationalen Beispielen zeigt, darunter erdbebensichere und nachhaltige Dorfent-wicklung in China, Überschwemmungsschutz durch traditionelle CO2-arme Bautechniken in Pakistan und Bangladesch, die vielfältige Umnutzung modernistischer Bauten in Brasilien und Europa, ein öko-logischer Community Land Trust in Puerto Rico, neue Konzepte für öffentliche Räume und durchmischte Stadtquartiere in Wien, London und Nairobi. Critical Care beweist, dass Architektur und Urbanismus dafür sorgen können, den Planeten wiederzubeleben.Die Reparatur der Zukunft hat begonnen.
