A Word From Our
Head Teacher
The Spirit of Christmas was the name of this years school show and parents who managed to attend this years show would have witnessed the incredible way our children are learning in our school. They were able to showcase wonderful talents through song, mime, music, drama and comedy. More importantly they taught all who watched, a lesson about the real meaning of Christmas showing us that Christmas is about caring, sharing , love, family, peace and joy. These are the real gifts of the baby Jesus born for us in Bethlehem.
I would like to thank you very much for all the ways you as parents, support our school. For the attendance at Parent Evenings or Fundraising Nights, donations for raffles or support for our food collections. For sending your child in every day with school uniform and for letting us know when and why pupils are absent. By supporting us you support your child and help them to feel proud of their school.
On behalf of all my staff in Cardinal Winning Sec. may I wish you all a peaceful and holy Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year.
Looking forward to 2015,
Gerry McDonald
Headteacher

Halloween Party
This was a great success with lots of people dressing up for the party.
There was lots of games and competitions with great music and some fantastic dancing. Well done to the Enterprise Group (4A+4B) who did a great job, planning and organising this event.
Safari Park September 2014. In September S1-S3 went on Variety Club outing to Blair Drummond Safari Park. The pupils enjoyed a very exciting day . Ogilvie two thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the safari park with the school. The class enjoyed seeing all the animals. Jason loved the rhino best but we all agreed that the sea lion show was the
best entertainment. All the class were brave enough to try out some of the fair rides and the S4 boys even went on the boat trip to monkey Island. On the way back to the bus, Mrs Gibb could not believe how close we got to the elephant!! It was a great day, and lovely to share it with our friends.
Since then we have learned about the animals and have made a cartoon comic strip depicting our day.

East 40
In the run up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, over 40 pupils from all across the St. Mungo’s learning community collaborated to write, record and release a charity single for UNICEF entitled, ‘Let the Games Begin.’
Led by the talented staff of St. Anne’s Primary school, and featuring members of a number of famous bands including Franz Ferdinand and The Frightened Rabbits, the single was released after an extensive tour of Glasgow and London and a number of press releases.
Musicians from Cardinal Winning who performed on the track were senior pupils Leigh Anne Byrne, Stephanie McCafferty and Jennifer Power.
Ethan Hoey and Rian Murray were also involved in creating the fabulous artwork for the single cover.
As part of the tour, the musicians visited London for a 3 day trip where they visited the UNICEF headquarters and toured famous landmarks including Number 10 Downing Street and The House of Commons. They also met and performed with Lulu!
On their return to Glasgow, East 40 performed their single at the Glasgow Green launch concert.
Later in the year, in the aftermath of the Commonwealth Games, East 40 were still in demand, performing in George Square at the switch on of the Christmas lights.
All of the pupils and staff involved in the East 40 project were recognised for their efforts in October of this year when the Lord Provost awarded them a special award for their charitable contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Staff were invited to the prestigious Lord Provost’s dinner reception and pupils were awarded their very own dinner reception in the City Chambers!
Congratulations to all Cardinal Winning pupil’s involved in this amazing project!
Belgium Residential
1914-2014
The Belgium residential trip for our S5 & S6 students was the highlight of their learning for the year. They travelled to Flanders as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. They saw examples detailing the loss of life that was made to protect their future. Based around Ypres, our group visited a number of important historical sites including the Passchendaele museum & battlefield, Tynecot Commonwealth Cemetery, the grave of the 15 year old youngest soldier casualty and the moving ‘Last Post’ ceremony at the Menin Gate. We also managed to fit in trips to the Boudewjin Sea Park & Dolphinarium, the beautiful city of Bruges and Bobbejaanland Theme Park. As well as all this our students had the experience of an overnight sail to and from the continent between Hull and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. A great time was had by all.
Christmas Fayre
S1 have been very busy this term working with S2&S3 organising the school Christmas Fayre on the 4th December 2014. We wrote to lots of companies for raffle donations and worked hard making posters and invitations.
The Fayre was a great success because we all worked together as a team and learned lots about working with money and organising events. The event raised over £1500 for school funds!

A number of pupils recently represented the school in the West of Scotland cross-country championships at Bellahouston. This was the first of three events. Well done to all pupils who participated in muddy conditions with a special mention going to Richard Muir who was placed second, Sarah McWilliams who was placed third and also to Paul Conlin who was third in their respective age groups.
End of Term Merit Reward Trip
Last week the 37 lucky pupils who earned
the most merits this term were taken to
Edinburgh Zoo as a reward trip. Even
though it was very cold both pupils and
staff had a great day. From karaoke on the bus to visiting the
pandas a great time was had by all. Well done to all successful
pupils for their excellent behaviour and attitude this term. There
will be another equally exciting reward trip next term which every
pupil will have the opportunity to aim for.
Football News
Well done to Cardinal Winning
Secondary Football team on this
year’s performances and some stand
out debuts. Special mention for
scoring debuts for Jay Martin and
Keiran Traynor. Erick Kwok has
done well starting as new team
goalkeeper. New blood in the team
include Amilton Mbali, Anthony
McWilliams and Richard Muir at the
back, Jordan Cullen in Midfield and
Keiran Traynor upfront. The team
are currently sitting 3rd in the league
and a few good performances
against the so called ‘Big Teams’
should rectify this. Keep up the hard
word team.
Commonwealth
Afternoons
Congratulations to all of the staff
and pupils involved in the
commonwealth afternoons this
term. All pupils have excelled in
Cycling, golf, football swimming,
judo and more. Lots of different
venues have taken part including the
newly refurbished Tollcross Leisure
Centre. Hopefully this initiative can
return in the new term with
everyone choosing their favourite
activity.
