Installation Clean-Up and Neighborhood Earth Day Challenge

The Installation clean-up is from March 13th through March 17th. We

would like to encourage all our residents to get out, clean-up, and

make a difference.

The Villages at Fort Irwin will provide trash bags, rubber gloves, and

designated pick-up areas for trash. Stop by self-help at the

maintenance office (3559 Goldstone) to get these items to assist you

in helping to keep our installation clean.

In celebration of Earth Day 2017, The Villages at Fort Irwin will be

hosting a neighborhood clean-up and beautification challenge.

Starting March 11th and running through April 17th, free plants and

flowers will be available at self-help for our residents to encourage

beautification of their yards. The PX will offer a 25%discount on all

lawn and garden items, and Home Depot offers a 10% discount to

all active duty and retired military. This is your chance to come

together with your neighbors, challenge other neighborhoods, and

show how much the earth means to you.

There will be a children’s Earth Day event on Saturday, April 8th, on

the grassy area outside the Sandy Basin Community Center. We will

provide pots to decorate and flowers to plant, that the kids can take

home to promote Earth Day awareness and encourage pride in their

homes and yards.

The winning neighborhood will be announced on April 17th, and

those participating in the competition will be honored at a Pizza and

Pool Party at the Sandy Basin community pool on Earth Day,

Saturday the 22nd of April. There will be food, games, swimming, and

giveaways to applaud your time and efforts in helping to make Fort

Irwin a beautiful place to call home.

** Special thanks to AAFES, Wallace Commercial Landscaping, and

Home Depot for providing donations and discounts in support of our

community.**

Village Mayoral Program

The Army Community Service Mayoral Program is an avenue to bring

the needs, concerns, and recommendations of the residents to the

Garrison Commander. It is a method to improve quality of living, and

promote a sense of mutual concern, togetherness, and community.

Mayor positions are open to all Fort Irwin residents. If you’re

community-oriented, willing to learn, and want to make a

difference, please contact Mr. Bates at ACS, 760-380-8422, for more

information on becoming a Mayor.

Spring Cleaning Reminders

For quick, easy cleaning, load

up your dishwasher with things

like glass light-fixture globes,

plastic toys, toothbrush

holders, and so much more.

Trap more dirt off shoes by

using a door mat on the

outside, and one on the inside.

Clean up your vacuum by

replacing the bag or cleaning

the dust receptacle, replace or

wash filters, and snip any

threads, etc, that may be caught

in the beater brush.

Clean your cutting board by

rubbing it with the cut side of a

lemon, sprinkled with salt or

baking soda.

Freshen up your sink by

running cold water and some

lemon rinds through your

garbage disposal.

Wash out your trash and

recycle bins.

Go through your pantry and

cabinets and throw out any

expired foods.

Remember to vacuum your

mattress when you change your

sheets.

PARENTS: the fenced-in construction yard on the corner of Barstow

and Normandy is private property and

off limits to all unauthorized persons.

Please instruct your children that it is very

dangerous to enter and play in there, no matter

how appealing those dirt piles are.

! ! Important ! ! Please update The Villages at Fort Irwin housing office with any changes or additional phone numbers, email addresses, rank changes, family members and pets. It’s very important that we have your current information for any critical announcements that may affect you and your family, or in the event of an emergency.

Thank you!

Did you know…

Recycling is a $200 billion industry in the U.S.

Recycling generates 7-10 more jobs than landfills and

waste-to-energy plants.

According to a recent EPA study, the U.S. recycles less

than 22% of its discarded materials.

Despite only representing 5% of the world population,

the U.S. generates more waste than any other country

in the world.

The U.S. recycling levels have improved little in 20 years,

despite the billions of dollars spent on recycling

awareness and education.

In less than 10 years, worldwide waste is expected to

double.

Recycling a stack

of newspaper

Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves the

equivalent energy usage of a two-person household

Recycling a single aluminum

can saves enough energy to

power a TV for 3 hours, and

the average person has the

opportunity to recycle more

than 25,000 cans in a lifetime

just 3 feet high

saves one tree

Almost half of the

food in the U.S. goes

to waste –

approximately 3,000

pounds per second.

Americans throw away 2.5 million

plastic bottles every year

Food scraps make up almost 12% of

U.S. municipal solid waste
