THE RESURGENCE OF HOT CREEK?
Hot Creek was once considered one of the premier Blue Ribbon trout streams in the United States.
Historically it was known for its prolific hatches and abundance of large trout. Some of us surely
remember those late morning mayfly hatches (lasting two to three hours on average) when the trout
almost seemed to take up more space than the water itself.
Unfortunately over the last ten years or so a combination drought conditions, and in my opinion,
mismanagement of Hot Creek have made it a shadow of its once great self. Low water levels allowed
the native aquatic plants to take over much of the creek which decreased the size and number of the
fishing lanes and the opening of the creek to year round angling has, once again in my opinion, stressed
and reduced the fish population. There certainly could be other reasons for the decline of this fishery
and I am not a biologist, but my decades of fishing there has allowed me some insight into the problem.
However there may be some good news. Last year the DFG started planting the creek with thousands
of sub-catchable (shouldn’t it be “sub-keepable, as they surely are “catchable”) browns and rainbows
which has swelled Hot Creek with fish populations not seen for many years. If the DFG would just close
the creek off to fishing over the winter for a few years and if we could just experience several even
normal snow packs we could see the return of Hot Creek to its once great glory.

Catching the World’s
Fastest Shark on the Fly Full article (click on link) at: Fly Lords Mag
The two yellowfin carcasses were still fresh and hadn’t begun to stink.
They were a welcome addition to our arsenal of chum, but they also signaled
that expectations were high. Our friend Dalton Smith was visiting southern
California from Salt Lake City, and he had caught one of these particular tuna
on the fly the previous day. Today we were chasing short-fin makos, and it was
going to take one hell of a shark to match the thrill of those tuna.
Dalton hooked him like a pro, but that’s when all hell broke loose.
Typically we fish makos with two, maybe three, people on the boat — four
people is a proverbial cluster, with lots of shouting and stumbling as the
shark does aerial cartwheels and threatens to run your line around the
trolling motor. Bobby coached Dalton while we took pictures and got in
the way, and after a 20-minute fight, we released the still-pissed-off
shark. The pressure was off, and it was only 11:00 AM.

A LITTLE GIRL'S BIG IMPACT
IN TROUT MAGAZINE
She let the flies go tight with the water and
somehow then made the perfect cast right in
the seam. I watched—expecting the fish to bolt.
Instead the bigger of the two trout drifted into
the seam and sucked down the pheasant tail. I
helped her lift the rod tip and left the rest up to
Blue. “click here” to read more….
