Yale Women’s Hockey 2005-06

The 2005-06 season marks the 30th anniversary of women’s hockey at Yale, and the Bulldogs hope to make it a his-toric one. With three of last year’s top four scorers returning and one of the best goaltenders in the country anchoring the defense, Yale could very well continue its record-setting ways this year. The Bulldogs shattered the school mark for wins last season (16) and advanced to the ECACHL semifinals for the first time. If the pieces come together this season, they could accomplish even more.

Senior goaltender Sarah Love, a preseason All-USCHO pick, has been a key to Yale’s recent success. A two-time team MVP, she owns the school record for single-season wins (14), save

percentage (.931) and goals-against average (2.25). Love was playing her best hockey when last season ended, posting a 1.66 GAA and .935 save percentage over the final eight games. Yale also has two capable backups in junior Carrie Horbatuk and sophomore Shivon Zilis. Zilis showed her potential last season with a .914 save percentage and 2.38 GAA in seven games, including nearly leading the Bulldogs to an upset at then-No. 3 Dartmouth in February with 29 saves in a 3-2 loss. Horbatuk has allowed just two goals in 86:31 for her career.

The defense in front of Love will be without sophomore Helen Resor, who is with the U.S. National Team, but has another Resor to count on. Junior Nina Resor, Helen’s cousin, is a technically sound blueliner with 55 games of experience. Yale learned just how valuable she was last season when she was injured early in the Dec. 7 game against Mercyhurst and did not return until Jan. 28 at Brown. The Bulldogs went 1-7 and allowed over 3.6 goals per game in that stretch, compared to 15-8-1 and 2.4 goals per game when she was healthy. Junior Kelsey Johnson converted from forward midway through last season and should settle in at defense this year. A smart and consistent player, Johnson has had four goals and nine assists in each of her first two seasons in New Haven. Junior Regan Gilbride provides much-

needed versatility on Yale’s small roster, ably switching between defense and forward as needed. Sophomore Ann-Renée Guillemette showed potential last season, appearing in 30 games. Freshman Carlee Ness (Red Deer, Alta.) has an im-

pressive resume that includes a stint as a member of Team Alberta at the Pacific Cup in 2003 and at Canada’s Under-18 Hockey Challenge earlier this year. The freshman class also includes size (5-foot-8 Carry Resor (Westwood, Mass.), Nina’s sister) and speed (Dani-elle Kozlowski (Melrose, Mass.)).

The Bulldogs have depth and talent at forward, led by two seniors: captain Lisa Jacque and Deena Ca-plette. Caplette has the most career goals (29) and assists (42) of any player on the roster. The junior class has two top returning scorers in Kristin Savard and Jenna Spring. Savard led the team in scoring as a freshman, while Spring did so last year. The two have combined for 44 goals during their first two years. They are complemented by Sheila Zingler, a prototypical power forward at 5-foot-9. Zingler also has a scoring touch, as evidenced by her two goals (including the game-winner) in the ECACHL Quarterfinal-clinching win over Princeton last year. Christina Sharun switched from defense to for-ward midway through last season and has one of the most powerful shots on the team.

Yale also expects immediate help at forward from a group of freshmen with superb credentials. Crysti Howser (Wilmette, Ill.) tied for the scoring lead with seven points in five games at the U.S. Hockey Select 17/18 Festival. Classmates Sarah Tittman (Chilton, Wisc.) and Maggie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn.) also were se-lected for the festival, chipping in three points each. Kristen Stupay (Ashburn, Va.), who has been to Lake Placid as well, rounds out the list of newcomers.

Hilary Witt enters her fifth season at Yale, and fourth as head coach, having overseen a historic turnaround in the program. Last year’s squad set the school record for overall wins (16) and conference wins (12), making an apperance in the ECACHL semifinals for the first time in history. With Yale’s 3-0 win over Vermont on Feb. 19, 2005, Witt became Yale’s all-time leader in coaching wins. The team’s 37 wins in her first three seasons are one more than Yale had in the seven seasons combined prior to her arrival. Yale has made the ECACHL playoffs for four straight seasons with her on the staff.

Witt joined the Bulldogs as an assistant coach in 2001-02 before moving up to the head coach role the following season. She was named ECAC Women’s Coach of the Year in 2002-03, leading the Bulldogs to what was then a school-record five conference wins. In 2004-05 the Bulldogs broke that mark with eight and tied the school record for overall wins (12).

The Bulldogs have also maintained a standard of academic excellence under Witt, placing a school-record nine players on the ECACHL All-Academic Team last season.

Witt, who spent time with the U.S. Women’s National Team during her senior year at Northeastern, helped the Bulldogs achieve another milestone this past summer with the selection of sophomore defenseman Helen Resor to Team USA for the Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Pre-Olympic Tour. Resor is the third Bulldog to have spent time with the national team.

A 2001 graduate of Northeastern and a member of the Huskies’ Hall of Fame, Witt completed her senior season with the Huskies in 1999-2000, leading the team in goals (30), assists (24) and points (54). She earned her third Kazmaier Award finalist spot that year and was ranked among the top 10 scorers in the ECAC in all offensive categories. During the year, Witt was invited to play for the United States Select Team but turned down the honor because she felt a captain should not desert her team in the middle of the season. She led the Huskies in scoring in three of her four seasons and finished her career as Northeastern’s all-time leader in goals and points (113-94-207) in 139 games. During her four-year career Northeastern went 100-31-11 and made the post-season every year.

A communications major at NU, Witt graduated from Canton (Massachusetts) High School in 1996.

Equipment Manager Jeff Torre

Administrative Assistant Nadine Logan

Senior Associate Athletics Director Wayne Dean

A member of the Yale Athletics Department for over 17 years, Nadine Logan is the Administra-tive Assistant to the men’s and women’s hockey coaching staffs and its Senior Associate Director. In addition to working with the hockey programs, she is also the Administrative Assistant for women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and men’s and women’s cross country and track. Nadine has twin daughters and resides in Milford.

Wayne Dean has been a part of Yale Athletics since 1986. He is responsible for the oversight of sports publicity, marketing and corporate sponsorships, ticket operations, Ingalls Rink operations, men’s lacrosse and both Bulldog hockey programs. He also serves as the chair of the ECACHL Ex-ecutive Committee. He is a member of the ECAC Board of Directors and serves as President-Elect. Dean is a past member of the NCAA Men’s Hockey Committee, serving as chair in 2004-05, as well as past president of Yale Youth Hockey. He served as a coach and administrator at Springfield Col-lege, Mitchell College and the University of Connecticut before coming to Yale. He is a 1977 Lyndon State College graduate and is a member of its athletics hall of fame. Dean, who served as tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four that Yale hosted in Providence, has an MS and a CAS in athletic administration from Springfield. He and his wife, Betsy, live in Westbrook with their children, Jake, Matt and Amy.

Brian O’Malley is in his second season working with the Yale women’s hockey team. O’Malley received his B.S. in athletic training and sports medicine with a minor in biology from Quinnipiac in May 2004. While at Quinnipiac he worked with the Yale men’s basketball and football teams as part of his clinical rotations. He is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). Originally from Worcester, Mass., he now lives in Hamden.

Director of Athletics Tom BeckettYale is fortunate to have one of the finest leaders in college sports as its director of athletics. Tom

Beckett, in his 12th year at Yale, is truly one of the most respected sports professionals in the country. From building top-notch facilities to bridging the relationship between Yale and the New Haven com-munity, and from filling the seats at the large venues to bringing the best coaches and student-athletes to the campus, Beckett has become one of the best-known athletic department heads in the nation. Yale President Richard Levin acknowledged that when he re-appointed Beckett, Yale’s 17th chief of athletics, to a second five-year term a year before his first pact had been completed. In the spring of 1994, Beckett took over an athletics program that had survived on its tradition and was only moderately motivated to succeed on the field. He was not satisfied with what he found, instilling in students and coaches alike the notion that Yale should be the “Champion of Champions” in the Ivy League. Since then, with his characteristic energy and dynamic leadership, he has turned the program into one of the models for schools of its size. Beckett has also considerably raised the profile of an entity that was virtually ignored in the area to one the New Haven community is proud of and supports. During his tenure the men’s hockey team won its first ECAC championship and the men’s basketball team captured its first Ivy title in 40 years.

STAFF

Jeff Torre fills in for Ed Maturo as equipment manager this season while Maturo is with the U.S. women’s hockey National Team for the 2006 Olympics. Torre served in a similar role the last time Maturo took a leave of absence, 1994 with the men’s National Team. Torre began working for Yale in 1987 while at West Haven High School, where he played hockey and graduated in 1989. After work-ing primarily with the football equipment staff to start, Torre began working on the Ingalls Rink staff in 1991. He has worked with Maturo for both Yale Hockey programs since 1994. Torre lives in Ansonia with his wife, LeeAnn, and daughter Emma.
