In 2006 Joe Sestak ran for Congress in a district that was considered “locked up” by incumbent Republican, 10-term Rep. Curt Weldon. Since 1893, only one other Democrats had won the seat encompassing Delaware County.

During his 2006 campaign, Sestak shattered the 7th Congressional District’s fundraising record, raising over 3 million dollars. •Raised 125 times more than 2004 Democratic candidate•Raised 39 times more than the last four Democratic candidates combined.

In 2008 Sestak sought and won re-election, defeating Republican challenger Craig Williams by nearly 20%. Key Legislative Issues/ Defining Votes. Named the most productive “freshmen member” in the 110th Congress Voted for HR 3590, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Upon assuming office, one of Congressman Sestak's

first priorities was to provide all Americans with access to the affordable and quality health care he received for his family through the military.

Co-sponsored provisions incorporated into the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act, to begin to repair the economy, restore confidence in the markets, limit the damage to families and neighborhoods, and build new affordable housing.

Supported Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act, which provided protections to ensure that families can continue to access the loans they need to pay for college. Sponsored an amendment which reduced costs and provides better lessened any impact on students or educational institutions.

Voted for Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, because “we needed to take decisive action now to stop the bank lending freeze to ensure that my constituents have access to affordable car, education, small business and other consumer loans.”

Voted for Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act to preserve a domestic industry that accounts for about 4% of all GDP and 10% of U.S. Industrial production.

Voted for Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) Reform and Accountability Act, which overhauls the TARP to strengthen accountability, increase transparency, close loopholes, and require the Treasury Department to take significant steps on foreclosure mitigation.
