Competitors for impact devices

TRANSCRIPT

For this capstone all members conducted research in how different bones were broken and the testing methods used. A common trend rose from these articles that most of the equipment was custom-made for what specific test that was being conducted (i.e. bending ribs, blunt force trauma on a skull, snapping a femur in two, etc.). This was due to the industry not providing a machine for their specific testing purposes. These custom built models could have a price range of construction ranging from just under $1,000 to $4,500 given the materials or what tests were being performed. The lowest price was provided by Richard Watson of the Biodynamic Research Corporation. Researching similar products used for impact testing in this industry has yielded a price range starting at $2,000 dollars to upwards of $80,000 for various testing purposes. The cheaper models come equipped with no electronic suites to assist in the collection of data or safety cage to prevent shrapnel from hitting the tester. Another thing can be said is that the cheaper models do not have anything to hold certain materials in place. Again it has to be reiterated that the machines produced by the industry are meant to be used on plastics, steels, and other composite materials and are not meant to strike the unique geometry of human bones.Looking within the scope of limited budget of $895 out of the original $1,000, it is possible to replicate some of designs that are within the $2,000 price range if the proper materials are used in construction of our design. *High end marker was provided by Dr. David Raymond of Cal State of Los Angeles Mechanical Engineering Dept.* Low end marker was provided Richard Watson of Biodynamic Research Corporation in San Antonio, Texas.*Julie got back to me on the cost of the vertical drop in order to avoid the issues that plague their own vertical drop system it would be over $1000
