Hello all and happy spring!!

It has been a long, hard winter but hopefully good weather will soon be upon us and we can look forward to a busy end of the 201011 school year. It has been a difficult year for many district and many of our colleagues. I have heard countless stories of job loss, program cuts, and many excited new teachers are finding it difficult to secure a job in the teaching profession. The coming school year will be even more challenging for many of us. I hate to be so bleak in my message, but it is a very important time for us all to be vigilant and fight for our programs and positions. Many districts have had to make some difficult choices and in doing so, they may be in violation of state mandates and regulations. Please keep in mind that the Capital Zone and NYS AHPERD are here for you to support you and your programs and address any questions or concerns that arise from our members. There is no greater time than now for our profession to come together and be strong and supportive. We all do such important work for the young people that we teach and empower.

With all that being said there are many great things to report on as well. On May 2nd, the Capital Zone will again recognize hundreds of elementary and middle school youth at the Sandra G. Morley Elementary/Middle School Physical Education Leadership Awards at HVCC. This is a truly special event that honors some wonderful young people from over a hundred different schools in the Capital Zone.

The Capital Zone held its annual conference on Saturday, March 5th. Although turnout was lower than our normal conference numbers, the quality of programs offered was very high. We will most likely continue to hold the conference on a Saturday for the next few years since many districts no longer have conference budgets for staff.

On Saturday, June 4th Niskayuna High School will be hosting a “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” Safety Certification. Please see more details about this event in this newsletter.

Lastly, I would like to personally congratulate two amazing women as they retire from their respective positions and districts: Ms. Sandra Morley from Bethlehem and Mrs. Barbra Wurz from ScotiaGlenville. These women have been so incredibly significant to the Capital Zone, NYS AHPERD, and to myself. Their unique contributions have made this zone and NYS AHPERD the amazing professional organization that it is today. I could personally write so much about each of these great ladies, but I will keep it simple. Sandy and Barb, thank you for all that you have both done for me. You have both been instrumental in my own leadership and I will always be grateful for your guidance, support, and kindness. Best wishes on your retirement and the next ventures that you will enthusiastically pursue.

I hope that you will read through all of the other great activities and events featured in this newsletter. May you all have a wonderful end to this school year and a relaxing and fun filled summer ahead.

Yours in good health,

Lonnie Wilson

...many of her extraordinary accomplishments as an educator, I did not receive the news from her directly. As a particularly humble professional with a super hero line‐up of undertakings and achievements, there is still so much more that Ms. Morley has to offer the >ield of Education.

Ms. Morley graduated from Mamaroneck High School in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She went on to study and Graduated from SUNY Cortland with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1977. She spearheaded her >irst of many programs known as Project Perfect; a state grant‐funded program that developed physical education and athletic opportunities for physically and mentally handicapped students in the public schools. In 1983 Ms. Morley graduated from Adelphi University with a Mas‐ter’s in Exercise Physiology. She began her teaching career from 1981‐1983 at Hammocks Middle School in Mamaroneck. While at Mamaroneck she coached Var‐sity Soccer, Fencing, and Field Hockey. In 1983 she moved with the Albany area and taught at Farnsworth Middle School in Guilderland, NY. While with the Guilder‐land School District she taught Physical Education and Coached Varsity Cross Coun‐try Running. At Farnsworth she helped to build a strong Project Adventure curric‐ulum and introduced Fencing to middle School students. Ms. Morley made the shift to Administration and became the Assistant Principal at Bethlehem Middle School in 2002. In 2009 she made the move to Principal of Bethlehem Middle School.

As a member for NYS AHPERD and AAHPERD Ms. Morley was President at the Zone, State and National Levels as well as served on the NYSAHPERD Board of Directors. She has presented numerous times at the state and national confer‐ences. She began the Capital Zone NYS AHPERD Elementary/Middle School Leader‐ship Awards 26 years ago. Two years ago the Capital Zone voted unanimously to make the Elementary/Middle School Leadership Awards her namesake. Ms. Morley is the race co‐founder/ coordinator for the Freihofer's, run for kids from its incep‐tion to the present. Ms. Morley has worked with fencing administration at the Em‐pire State Games for a number of years and was a volunteer at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 1998 Ms. Morley became an Inductee into the Cortland Hall of Fame. In addition to the accomplishments and programs above there are many more; too many to list.

On a personal note, Ms. Morley is the reason I became a Physical Education Teacher. Her leadership and experience were all I needed to decide my career path. To quote a Secretary in her of>ice; “They say everyone is replaceable, she is not.” The Capital Zone of NYS AHPERD wishes Sandy a very happy and well de‐served Retirement! Congratulations Sandy!

...students to pursue careers in physical education and coaching.

Barb has been a great promoter of the Capital Zone of NYS AHPERD and recruit‐ing others to be involved too. She has served as Capital Zone President, co‐editor of the Capital Zone Newsletter, Capital Zone Conference Co‐director, ACES Zone and State Co‐ordinator, Goals 2000 Turnkey Trainer and has presented and presided at numerous Zone and State Conferences. She has published articles in the Great Activities Newspaper and NYS AHPERD publications. In 2004, Barb received The Professional of the Year Award at both our zone and state level.

Another passion of Barb’s has been her commitment to Jump Rope for Heart and helping the American Heart Association. What started out in 1987 as a two‐hour rope jumping activity for one hundred students after school, evolved over the years, into an all‐day, entire school event educating students about heart disease and stroke and the im‐portance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Barb has been a bloodhound at seeking out grant opportunities. Over her career she wrote nine grants of various sizes for things for her school such as juggling scarves, many large fitness signs in her gym, exercise bikes, an outdoor jogging trail for their play‐ground and Wii Sports. Perhaps, one of her most proud grant writing accomplishments would be her contribution to not one, not two, not three, but four attempts at writing a Carol M. White PEP Grant. The last attempt was successful to the tune of $1.1 million over three years to revamp the Scotia‐Glenville Physical Education Program. This last grant also pulled her away from her longtime position at Sacandaga Elementary School and placed her in the colossal role of PEP Grant Coordinator. She has been in this role for the last two years. Next year, she will return half‐time to help complete the final year of the grant.

During her career it was a priority for Barb to keep up with the latest technolo‐gy. She followed a trend of incredible growth with technology and how it could be used to better teach her students. From typewriters, mimeo machines and filmstrips she gradu‐ated on to hand‐held computers for assessment, D.D.R., Video‐Interactive Exercise Bikes, iPods with wrist remotes, Flip Cameras and Hopsports.

While Barb will no longer be teaching in the school setting, I am sure, she will still be actively practicing what she preaches about leading a healthy lifestyle. She will be golfing, gardening, golfing, playing with her grandson Benton, golfing, traveling and spending time with her husband Bruce, daughter Abbey and son‐in‐law Chris, son Zach and soon to be daughter‐in‐law, Amy AND playing more golf. I have been inspired by Barb and will greatly miss working with her. I am extremely fortunate to call her my friend.

It was the fall of 1990 when I ran into my middle school Physical Education teacher Carole Roy. She encouraged me to attend a meeting with other PE and Health teachers in the Capital district ar-ea. I showed up at the meeting at Pratt‛s Place, no longer a deli across from Colonie Center. It was that night that I first met Sandy Morley. I was the youngest person at the meeting and when I left I was the recording secretary of the Capital Zone! Who could say “no” to Sandy Morley?

Sandy has that way about her! She has that ability to “hook” others into NYS AHPERD. Af-terall, I think she has held EVERY position ever offered at the state and local level!

One does not meet a “Sandy Morley” very often in a lifetime. She is the ULTIMATE profes-sional and leader. She is dedicated beyond belief, full of boundless energy, and creativity, strong val-ued, positive and persistent. She has the most amazing passion, knowledge and insight of any profes-sional I have ever worked with.

I remember a phrase that Sandy shared with students at an Elementary/Middle School PE Leadership Awards program of which is now named in her honor. She told them to “do the right thing”. What a simple message, yet one that I repeat to my students almost on a daily basis.

There are thousands of students, parents, colleagues and friends who are truly a better per-son, simply because Sandy Morley has had a tremendous impact on them.

Thank You Sandy and best wishes to you as you retire and continue on life‛s journey!

Fondly,

Jo Ann Sabourin

A KID-FRIENDLY MARATHON Submitted By: Colleen Mickle

This spring students at Guilderland Elementary will have an opportunity to run in a marathon. In an attempt to encourage students to increase their fitness levels, PE teachers Colleen Mickle and

Casey Bardin coordinate a marathon program at their school, this is the 9th annual marathon! Students sign up to run one mile a day for 25 days. Participants keep a running log of their miles completed at home. All are invited to run the final 1.2 miles together with other marathon participants one afternoon at school. Marathoners received tee shirts, slices of watermelon and hearty congratulations from the crowds who come to cheer them on. Many parents join their children in logging miles and share in the culminating celebration.

The total number of participants is usually about 150. They are hoping that number will continue to grow each year. If you are interested in offering a similar fitness opportunity for your students, feel free to call or email Colleen or Casey at school... 8690293 or [email protected]

On Monday, May 2nd, the 26th annual Sandra G. Morley Lead‐ership Award Program continued it’s tradition of honoring ele‐mentary and middle school students for their leadership abilities and positive influence on their peers. We are proud to announce that this year, we honored 660 students from a record breaking 111 schools in 36 districts.

The award ceremony was once again held in the McDonough Sports Complex at Hudson Valley Community

College. As in the past, the program was a big success. The fac‐ulty and staff at Hudson Valley were amazing in their ability to set up the facility and help our night run smoothly. We are eter‐nally grateful for their commitment to our program and their generous offer to use their facility practically free of charge!

This year also saw a changing of the guard with Regan Johnson taking over as Master of Ceremonies for Sandy Morley who, after years of service, announced her retirement this year. Regan definitely rose to the occasion, speaking poignantly about leadership and character. By sharing the inspiring story of Wake Forest’s baseball coach Tom Walker, who selflessly donated a kidney to one of his players, he demonstrated that true leaders not only “talk the talk” but “walk the walk”. Thanks to Regan, and Lonnie Wilson, who graciously volunteered to act as our

second reader, the program ran smoothly and ended in a timely manner.

Our presentation this year included a talented young sing‐er, Anthony Gargiulo, from Bethlehem Middle School singing the National Anthem as well as a performance from the Shenendehowa Color Guard Team. These seventeen students,

under the direction of Scott Snell, performed an energetic and flawless routine to a rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing” from the TV show Glee. Not only did they succeed in entertaining both students and parents, but they demonstrated what you can achieve with cooperation, hard work, and dedication!

The Sandra G. Morley Leadership Award program continues to be a success because of all those who invest their time

and support. We would like to thank the teachers who support us by participating in the program year after year, and all those who assisted us the night of the ceremony. Last, but certainly not least, we’d like to acknowledge the committee who worked so diligently to put the program together. They are: Bob Collen, Colleen Mickle, Sandy Morley, and Pat Mosher. The program coordinator, Mara DeSilva is extremely grateful for all their help and we wish Sandy well as she enters this new chapter in her life!

LOCAL NATIONAL GRANT WINNER

Congratulations to Ryan Patrie on his recent grant award from the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, AAPAR for his video

entry in the Every Body Can! Adapted Physical Activity Video Contest. This was a nationwide video contest that promotes, celebrates, or teaches

adapted and inclusive physical activity while raising awareness about the opportunities for and accomplishments of people with disabilities. Ryan's

video; "Community Adapted Physical Education," was chosen in the "Lifelong Activity" category and was featured at the AAPAR's Recognizing Outstanding Leaders Awards Evening at the national convention in San Diego this past March. Wildwood High School students are featured in the video as they participate in their community adapted physical education program. The community adapted physical education program at Wildwood focuses on

exposing students with autism spectrum disorder, complex learning disabilities, and other developmental disabilities to community

recreational opportunities and facilities. Featured in the video were a class of Wildwood High School Juniors and Seniors as they participated in

the sport of curling at the Schenectady Curling Club.

Advocating for You Submitted By: S. Jacob Colwell

Here are some of the ways NYS AHEPRD and Capital Zone AHPERD are advocating for you and how you can get involved

*As made obvious by the audits of schools done last year, most NYS public elementary, middle schools and high schools are not in compliance with the state mandates for Physical Education. These mandates can be viewed on the State Ed. website via this link: mandates

If you know your school is not meeting these mandates, you and the parents of your district can force State Ed. to intervene at your school by filing a 310 appeal form through State Ed which can be found at this link: 310 appeal This form also applies if your school is trying to reduce or eliminate your position and replace your Physical Education time with supervised physical activity time. Recently an elementary Physical Education teacher who was told she was being reduced and her time replaced brought this information and these filed documents to her school board meeting. She not only saved her full time position, but the position of her colleague as well. * NYS AHPERD is getting involved with the “Lets Move” campaign of First Lady Michelle Obama. We are creating a multimedia presentation that demonstrates and explains how a quality physical education class promotes healthy lifestyles in it’s students and how Health and Physical Education Teachers are the front line of defense in the war against childhood obesity in America. This presentation is being filmed and created right here in the capital district at Woodland Hill Montessori School in North Greenbush. To get involved with the project email me at [email protected] To learn more about the “Let’s Move” campaign visit http://www.letsmove.gov/ * Many experts believe that, with the success of the current “Race to the Top” battle for federal funding, NYS will continue to put a greater focus on testing in evaluating teachers. To prepare for this potential change and to create a better understanding of the success of our programs, NYS AHPERD is working on creating an Elementary and Middle School P.E. Profile. This collective assessment will align with the commencement level P.E. Profile that is already recognized throughout the state as a valid program assessment. The Elementary and Middle School level assessments still need to be perfected and we are looking for working teachers to try them out and provide feedback. If you are interested in trying out these assessments contact Ed Kupiec at [email protected]

Wildwood Students Benefit from 2010 Capital Zone Mini Grant

Wildwood School’s physical education program received almost $500.00 from NYS AHPERD Capital Zone as one of three winners of the 2010 Mini Grant. Wildwood is a School for children with autism spectrum disor-der, complex learning disabilities, and other developmental disabilities. Funds from the Mini Grant went towards a variety of standard and adapted physical education equipment. A goalball was purchased as part of Wildwood High School student’s Disability Awareness Unit so students could participate in the team sport designed for in-dividuals with visual impairments. Yoga mats were also purchased for Wildwood’s physical education program with help from the Mini Grant. Through yoga students at Wildwood learn to interact in a positive way through movement and mindful exercises that promote social and emotional learning. A huge thank you to the Capital Zone for helping build Wildwood’s physical education program.

Health Fair Held at Scotia-Glenville

As part of the Carol M. White Federal PEP Grant the Scotia-Glenville Physical Educa-tion Department hosted a Health Fair and Physical Education Open House on Wednes-day, May 11, 2011.Over 45 exhibitors were present at this community event.

The purpose of this event was to educate the students and their families on the resources available to them in the community in the areas of health, fitness and nutri-tion. At the same time high school students demonstrated the proper use of exercise equipment including spinning bikes, BOSU and stability balls in the new Fitness Center. Middle school students showed off their talents in DDR in the Old Fitness Center while elementary students demonstrated proper techniques in rollerblading and The First Tee Golf Program. High 5 Adventure learning initiatives were the last area of demonstration by high school assisted by their PE teachers. It was an evening for the whole family! Plans are already being made to make this an annual event.
