Realizing that our natural resources are limited, Capital Metro is implementing an Environmental and Sustainability Management System to help reduce our environmental impacts and operate more efficiently.

Measuring Sustainability

• Establish baseline and set goals

– Energy use

– Fuel use

Goals: Reduce Waste

• Establish a zero waste program

– Design new program with waste contractor.

– Partner with Austin Resource Recovery.

– Launch pilot composting program at Metro Childcare Center.

– Pursue recycling at key stops and transit centers.

Case Studies: Zero Waste

Capital Metro implemented a single stream recycling program for paper, plastic, glass and metal.

Changes to our painting operations and paint booth filters resulted in $25,000 saving per year, and the elimination of a waste stream.

Goal: Conserve Energy

• Develop and implement an energy conservation plan and best practices.

– Host an Austin Energy conservation audit.

– Replace chiller and lighting with more efficient equipment.

– Establish a demand response energy management program through ERCOT.

– Consider energy efficiency in new construction, renovation, and procurement.

Case Studies: Energy

New energy efficient lighting upgrade in maintenance shop will save $58,000 per year and reduce energy use by ~40%.Previous lighting upgrade in the Administration building is saving $22,000 per year (2013-2014).

Upgrade to the bus wash system reduces water use by 240,000 gallons and saves $149,000 each year (2012).

A new HVAC system will reduce energy use by 10% and save $46,000 per year in energy costs (2013).
