CELEBRATIONCELEBRATION

The John Walter Band, celebrating its 17th anni-versary this year, is devoted to those among us who have music as a vocation – whether as a profession or just as a serious hobby. It was started by John Walter, who wanted to provide an outlet for musicians to get together on a regular basis, and to express themselves

NORTH CAPE MAY - Experience “Beatlemania” aboard the Cape May–Lewes Ferry this summer with Sir Beatle! On Aug. 18, the Ferry will host the “Sir Beatle” Sing-Along Show for passengers in Lewes and Cape May. Rec-reating the Beatles phenom-enon on stage, this show chronologically highlights the journey of the Beatles from their career debut on

the “Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964 to their fi nal live performance in 1969.

“Having Sir Beatle per-form for our passengers is always a treat” says Charisse Rudolph, cus-tomer service manager at the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. “Whether you’re a true Beatlemaniac, or just someone who appreciates singing along to the clas-sics, the show is a perfect

mixture of nostalgia, and musical fun that will take passengers on a ride back in history from their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 to their fi nal live performance in 1969.”

The performance fea-tures live vocals, live bass guitar, state of the art drum and guitar tracks, and au-thentic Beatle costuming, including their classic black suits. All of these features allow “Sir Beatle” to cap-ture the essence and sound of a real live Beatles perfor-mance.

“Sir Beatle” will play a 45 minute set in the Deb-raak Lounge on the MV Twin Capes. Food will be available during the cross-ing and a cash bar will be open in the lounge. Two shows are scheduled for each day.

musically and have fun. John Walter was the

musical director of the Whitehall School District, a suburb of Allentown Pa., for many years until he re-tired to Avalon Manor. On March 5, 1996, missing his music, Mr. Walter placed an advertisement in the local newspapers inviting musicians who would like to get together and play for fun to a meeting. Thirty-fi ve musicians showed up for the meeting. This group became the nucleus of the Middle Township Commu-nity Band. Since its humble beginnings, it has grown into an organization that can be taken seriously.

Since 2007, the John Walter Cape Community Band is honored to have one of the most talented musician on the East Coast as our Director and Con-ductor – Richard P. Ludwig, affectionately known as “Dutch” to his friends. “Dutch” has had a long and varied successful career as an Educator, a Band Director, a Professional Musician (Trumpeter), a Theater Manager, as well as a continuing position as a Professional Music Ad-judicator for the National Judges Association, a posi-tion he has held for over 30 years.

During the off-season, our band practices on Tues-day nights in Cape May Court House. We play concerts throughout the

Cape May Terminal at 4:30 p.m., a 45 minute show will take place on the voyage to Delaware. The return trip to Cape May at 6:15 p.m. is at leisure aboard the vessel. Dela-ware customers will enjoy the same show on the 6:15 p.m. departure from the Lewes Terminal. The 8:00 p.m. return service to Lewes will be at leisure aboard the vessel.

Tickets cost $18.00 for guests 14 years of age and older, $15.50 for those between the ages of 6-13, and $9.00 for children ages 5 and under. A $5.00 up-grade is available on stan-dard fares and on-board. Due to limited capacity and popularity of the event, res-ervations are REQUIRED. To reserve tickets call our Customer Contact Center at 1-800-643-3779.

SEA ISLE CITY – On July 25, Sea Isle City’s Division of Recreation will welcome Philadelphia Flyers legend Bob “The Hound” Kelly back to the Dealy Field Hockey Court for this year’s Flyers Hooked on Hockey Clinic. The main goal of this one-day event, which is open to boys and girls (ages 6 to 12), is to create hockey awareness among children and teach them how they can benefi t from and have fun with the sport of hockey.

Kelly, who was a member of the Flyers’ famous "Broad Street Bullies" team, helped lead the franchise to two consecutive Stanley Cup Championships in 1974 and 1975. Today, he is considered the Flyers’ “Ambas-sador.”

During the clinic, Kelly will teach the children basic fundamental hockey techniques, run drills and lead the youngsters in other enjoyable activities. He and his staff will also give each participant a free Mylec hockey stick, so the children can continue to improve their hockey skills at home.

According to Assistant Superintendant of Recreation Cheryl Castor, Kelly is very good at his job.

“Bob Kelly is wonderful,” says Castor. “He does a great job with the clinic and the children love him. He always encourages the participants and ensures that everyone enjoys this event.”

The fee to participate in the Hooked on Hockey clinic is $5.00 per child. To pre-register your child or learn more about this popular event, phone (609) 263-0050.

AVALON -- Mark For-rest, an acclaimed Irish tenor, whose melodic voice has filled concert halls and cathedrals from Carnegie Hall to the Vati-can, will perform during a healing service at St. Bren-dan Parish at Maris Stella Church, 5012 Dune Drive, Avalon, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. for a healing service, and again, Aug. 4 for a concert. Both events are at 7 p.m. Suggested ticket donation for the concert is $10. Everyone is welcome.

Mark Forrest has sung inspirational hymns for luminaries such as Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa. His soothing Broadway melodies have entertained award-win-ning performers including Charlton Heston and Mau-reen O’Hara. From the White House to his own house, with his wife and seven children, Mark con-tinues to inspire the world with his music. It will be a time of meditation, music, prayer and healing.

Although this inter-national Irish tenor has performed for some of the leading orators of our time, Mark Forrest is not beckoning audiences to himself, rather he hopes his listeners will hear a

deeper cal l and a t tune their ears to his heartfelt message – a message that h a s b e e n s h a p e d b y what many would call the tragedies in his life. Mark is the father of eight boys. His song is the Faith and Family Foundation, an or-ganization he and his wife, Muriel, founded in l999 to support and encourage individuals and families with special needs. His “lyrics” are the sanctity of human life, at every stage and age.

Mark and Muriel’s ef-forts to establish The Faith and Family Foundation were born out of the sor-rowful death of their third boy, Francesco, who was diagnosed in utero with a severely compromised heart. He lived only fi ve days, “touching more people than I ever will in a lifetime,” Mark says.

Their second son, John Patrick, was also born with special needs and is bat-tling a rare nerve condition that has left him blind and

confi ned to a wheelchair. Their foundation assists individuals who care for persons with disabilities, and well as awards to those who best exemplify the ethos of Faith and Family in a public setting. The foun-dation offers annual awards recognizing outstanding persons with disabilities.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was awarded full schol-arships to study music. He was educated at The Royal College of Music and at the Catholic University of America’s Benjamin Rome School of Music.

Tickets are available at the door, or by calling Maris Stella Church at 967-3746.

WILDWOOD – The ex-citement for the 104th Wildwoods Baby Parade kicks off early this year with two new events tak-ing place on July 30 – the day before the famous parade: The Wildwoods Loves Waddlers Contest; and a Coronation Lun-cheon for Queen Oceania and her court.

An exciting new event for infants, toddlers and spectators alike, The Wild-woods Loves Waddlers Contest will take place at 10 a.m. at the Wildwoods Convention Center Park-ing Circle. This inaugural event encourages very young participants at walk-ing or crawling age to show off their speed-crawling or “waddling” techniques to win prizes - prior to the official Wildwoods Baby Parade on July 31.

The contest is open to any speed-crawling babies 15 months and younger, and any waddling toddlers 24 months and younger. The event will have two categories – The Crawl and The Waddle – and partici-pants will be encouraged by their parents to crawl or waddle to the edge of a 147” diameter circle. The fi rst participant in each cat-egory to crawl or waddle outside of the circle will be declared the winner. The winning crawler and waddler will each receive a family 4-pack to Morey’s Piers which includes a 3-hour session at either Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis Waterparks and un-limited amusement rides at all three Morey’s Piers amusement parks.

Registration is free and begins at 9 a.m. The fi rst 60 entries will receive a sand bucket fi lled with fun prizes including a free ride on the carousel at Morey’s Piers.

Immediately following The Wildwoods Loves Wad-dlers Contest there will be tram car service from the Wildwoods Convention Center to the NEW Coro-nation Luncheon for 2013 Queen Oceania and her court. The Luncheon takes place at noon at Adam’s Restaurant, 1700 Board-walk, North Wildwood. The luncheon is $20 per person and proceeds will benefi t the Baby Parade. The rain date for the new July 30 events will be July 31, 2013.

Queen Oceania will reign over the Wildwoods Baby Parade and greet thousands of spectators from atop the largest and fi nal fl oat in the parade, with Princess Oceania by

her side. Both will serve as community ambassadors.

The Wildwoods Baby pa-rade takes place on July 31, 2013 at 6 p.m. in front of the Wildwoods Convention Center with registration taking place starting at 4:30 p.m. and judging at 5 p.m. The rain date is Aug. 1, 2013.

COURT HOUSE - Linda Gentille and The Jersey Shore Pops will be continu-ing their 8 concert season on July 28 at 7:00 p.m. with “Swingin' Sixties" Starring Jim Yester and YesterDaze. The popular orchestra will open with music of the 60’s including music of the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, The Lovin Spoon-ful, Mama and the Papas, and The Association.

Yester was the founding member and original lead singer of the successful sing-ing group: The Association. Their legendary hits includ-ed Windy, Never My Love, Along Comes Mary and the beautiful classic Cherish. In 1967, The Association had the distinguished honor of outperforming The Beatles and became the number one group of the year. They performed on over 50 major television shows in a period of four years.

Jim started his career in 1960 with his brother Jerry and performed throughout California as The Yester Broth-ers. While fulfi lling service obligations with the US Army in Germany, he toured Germany and France for 1 years entertaining troops with a folk-comedy trio called The Yester Years. The Yester Years won many commenda-tions and lifting the spirits of many troops stationed far from home.

In 1965, Jim returned to LA and formed the popular group The Association. In 1966 the group earned their fi rst gold record for Along Comes Mary. In 1967 The Association was voted the number one vocal group in the USA. 1967, Cherish became the second gold record for The Association and Windy the third gold record. In 1968, Never My Love became the groups fourth gold record. Yester left The Association in the 70’s and joined his brother in the group The Lovin Spoonful. He reunited with The Association in 2009 to rave reviews and the group continues to tour the United States performing over 80 concerts a year. The Association is one of the few “oldies” groups that still has several original members in the band.

Although many bands of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s emphasized instruments over vocal harmonies, The As-sociation came across more as a vocal group than a band, even though they were both. The Association began with the break-up of an 11 man group “The Men” in 1965. The Men was the fi rst of what was called folk-rock, drums, electric guitar, electric bass, plus the usual banjo, 12 and 6 string acoustic guitars.

Yester was also nominated for a Golden Globe for writ-ing the title song for the movie “Goodbye Columbus” and a Grammy for “Never my Love”. Yester has 7 gold records and one double platinum album with a total of over 70 million records sold! A recent television appearance on the P.B.S. special, ”My Music, the 60’s” has generated a renewed interest in Yester’s music.

The Jersey Shore pops is led by conductor and pianist Linda Gentille. The orchestra is the newest orchestra in the state and is gaining in popularity each season. One of the attractions of the orches-tra is the popularity of the music director and conductor Gentille. Kay Aspell, managing director of the Middle Township Performing Arts Center states, “The Jersey Shore Pops has become a huge attraction here in Cape May County because of the outstanding shows produced and arranged by Gentille. The shows have grown each year and are now the most popular con-cert series we have ever hosted here at the PAC. Gentille is a charismatic entertainer and conductor who also arranges most of the music for the orchestra which sets her apart from

the other orchestra leaders in the state.” What has made the Jersey Shore Pops the most suc-

cessful new big band orchestra in New Jersey is Gentille along with her unique on stage showmanship. As a major headliner, she has performed on stages around the world. Pops president Dr. Nick Holland sums it up:” Gentille’s unique musical style of conducting while performing amazing feats on the piano has made this a must see show in Cape May. Her unique and original orchestra-tions sets her apart from all the other pianist conductors in the nation.”

The Jersey Shore Pops 2013 Summer Concert Series will continue with the following shows:

Aug. 4, 7:30 p.m. “Classics Rock” starring conductor & pianist Linda Gentille :

“This is a brand new show that Linda performs on cruises around the world with all her own arrangements of the most popular classics of all time.

Aug. 11, 7:30 p.m.: “Music of “The Glenn Miller Or-chestra” This show is going to be one of the highlights of the season that will feature all of the great hits of Glenn Miller.

August 17, 7:30 p.m.: “Sinatra and Friends” starring Peter Oprisko: “ Back by popular demand yet again is this amazing singer of Sinatra standards. He performs the music of Sinatra and the Rat Pack with additional songs by Judy Garland. This show will close the 2013 summer concert series with a bang.”`

The individual tickets will range from $25 for balcony seating to $40 for VIP orchestra center seating. Tickets at the door will increase to $30-$45 so advance purchases are encouraged to avoid long will call lines. The Middle Township PAC has large convenient parking lot and the parking at the venue is free of charge. CAPE MAY -- All aboard! Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage’s Annual Railroad Days will be held on Sat. and Sun., July 27-28 from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Marsh & McLennan Agency, Rail-road Days is the perfect outing for folks interested in railroad memorabilia, model and toy trains, or just enjoying a unique collection in a unique historical setting.

In the Village Wel-come Center, un-der the Friends’ Pavilion and along the Village’s shady lanes, visitors will fi nd presentations and displays from a variety of groups. On display in the Welcome Center will be the South Jersey Garden Railroad Society’s fi fteen-foot G scale railroad as well as the Strasburg Model Railroad Club’s display of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines HO scale layout. Near the Ice Cream Parlor, guests can see the South Jersey Garden Rail-road Society’s display hon-oring every child’s favorite tank engine. Additional groups, including the 4-H Club and Just for Fun, will exhibit a variety of models and landscapes. Railroad ephemera and memora-bilia will be on display and available for purchase near the Welcome Center. At 1:30 p.m. in the Wel-come Center on both Sat. and Sun., Jim Stephens,

H C S V Educat ion Director, will present a talk on Richard Trevithick, the little known inventor of the modern steam engine. Children can enjoy free toy train rides around the Vil-lage, Sat. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Sun. 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., departing behind the Wel-come Center. The Family Activity Area will feature special event-themed chil-dren’s take-home crafts.

“This is a wonderful event for the whole fam-ily- the model railroads are always fascinating to see in action,” said Anne Salvatore, HCSV Execu-tive Director. “Railroad lore is an integral part of the American experience and we are always excited to share that interest with the public.”

Two of the Village’s his-toric structures are linked

to Cape May County’s own railroading heritage. The Rio Grande Station, donated to HCSV in 1974 and recently added to the National and State Reg-isters of Historic Places, was built in 1894 by the Atlantic City Railroad to serve the Middle Town-ship rural farming com-munity of Rio Grande. The Woodbine Junction Tower is a two-story signal tower built in 1894 that originally stood in Dennis Township. It controlled the Woodbine Junction of the Atlantic City Railroad, which was the western end of a branch line that ran east to Ocean City. The tower was acquired by HCSV in 1974.

Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage is a non-profi t, open-air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period. It fea-tures 26 restored historic

structures on a 30-acre site. From late June to early Sept., interpreters and artisans in period cloth-ing preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of “the age of homespun.” Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Sunday, with special events every weekend through mid-September.

Historic Cold Spring Vil-lage is located on Route 9, three miles north of Vic-torian Cape May and four miles south of Rio Grande (Exit 4 of the Garden State Parkway).

Admission during the season is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 are admitted free. Unlimited free admission is available with Village membership. As a member of the nation-al Blue Star Museums pro-gram, Historic Cold Spring Village is proud to offer free admission to active duty military personnel and up to 5 family members. The Village Nature Trail at Brad-ner’s Run is open to the public for free self-guided tours. Visit the Country Store, Needle Arts Coop, Bakery, Ice Cream Parlor and Cold Spring Grange Restaurant.

For more information on events, membership, volunteering, or booking private affairs, please call (609) 898-2300, ext. 10, or visit the Village website at www.hcsv.org.

Ocean Galleries is de-lighted to welcome back rock ‘n roll legend, photog-rapher, and painter Graham Nash as he brings his latest collection of artwork to the Stone Harbor gallery.

Nash was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - once with Crosby, Stills & Nash and once with The Hollies. He has also been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame twice - both as a solo artist and with Crosby, Stills & Nash. In 2010, he was named Offi cer of the British Empire (OBE). His company’s original IRIS 3047 digital printer is now housed in the National Mu-seum of American History at the Smithsonian Institu-tion in recognition of his revolutionary accomplish-ments in the fi ne arts and

Graham Nash Returns to Stone Harbor with New Collection of Artwork digital printing world.

Born in the coastal town of Blackpool, England and raised in Salford, near Man-chester, Nash was drawn to photography at a young age by his father, an amateur photographer. Taking pic-tures of his family at age 11 proved life changing for Graham. Those early days behind the camera were an integral part of Nash’s artistic development. “That formative experience be-hind the lens teaches you to see in a particular way,” explains Nash. “It teaches you to think about compo-sition, framing, and light. Truly what it has taught me has never left me to this day.”

Last summer, the found-ing member of The Hol-lies and Crosby, Stills & Nash offered a glimpse at another artistic passion, debuting his never before seen artwork at Ocean Gal-leries. The multi-talented artist describes his artwork as the manifestation of his love for music and art over the past 50 years. In fact, Nash feels that his music and artwork share a strong correlation. “I don’t see any difference between taking an image and composing music…Much like any piece of art, writing a song starts with wanting to say something. With songwrit-ing, you aim to express an experience. That is what I do with every piece of my art,” he explains.

In his early teens, he decided that music was his calling, which led him down an award-winning career path. Currently on the Crosby Stills & Nash 2013 World Tour, Gra-ham’s jam packed schedule and jet setting has done little to hinder his artistic urges. “I honestly want to create every single day,” he asserts. After meeting the time demands of his whirlwind music career, “I want to utilize whatever time I have left in the best possible way,” he states.

“We are thrilled to have

Graham Nash back at the gallery,” commented Kim Miller, owner of Ocean Galleries. “Last summer’s debut of his artwork was incredibly well-received and the new art is every bit as spectacular. Although Graham has been painting and creating artwork for many years, he kept the pieces for his own pleasure and never shared them with the public until last year. It is amazing that such a humble man could be blessed with a multitude of artistic talent. We are very proud to have played a small part in convincing Graham to share his art with the world and can’t wait to share his new col-lection.”

Graham expresses simi-lar excitement about his return to Ocean Galleries and sharing this highly personal exhibition with anxious Cape May County fans. Prior to his premiere public exhibition last sum-mer, Graham Nash had never visited Stone Harbor or the surrounding area. “I really found it to be a delightful community,” he states passionately. He is wholeheartedly pleased with his decision to embark upon what he has described as an entirely new journey with the able assistance of Ocean Galleries. “I’m new to this business we call the ‘art business’. I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know if yellow goes next to purple,” he jokes. “I’m just having a great time.” His 2012 debut exhibition and the upcoming “Graham Nash: The Art of Visual Harmony” have been much appreciated opportunities for Graham “to test the waters”.

The “Graham Nash: The Art of Visual Harmony” exhibition will include nearly 100 of the artist’s exquisite paintings, pastels, and artistically enhanced photographs. Nash’s art-work incorporates a variety of techniques, many of them a natural evolution of his experimentation with photography. Several of his pieces incorporate block print or newsprint, mixed with photography,

each piece more unique than the next. Most of the artwork tells a memorable story about occasions in Nash’s life; hearing the artist share his recollec-tions and inspirations is arguably as special as the artwork itself.

“My artwork is a mani-festation of whatever I feel that day,” he states. “For me, creating is a process of getting something out of myself that needs to be out there.” Because his range of subjects and materials used remains wide and varied, Graham fi nds it diffi cult to singularly defi ne his artistic “style”. “My artwork will always be a marriage of everything that goes on in my life,” he explains. “My life is totally crazy, and I am very grateful for that. Yet for that reason, I’m not yet sure that I have a style. I’m not sure that when someone comes across one of my pieces twenty years from now, they will be able to say, ‘Yes, that’s a Nash’.”

Yet one particular piece of the upcoming Ocean

Galleries exhibition can be, without a doubt, easily identifi ed as “a Nash” origi-nal. A self-portrait taken in 1973, the photo depicts Nash shooting an image of himself in the refl ection of a mirror. Nash feels an especially profound con-nection to this image as it will run as the cover of his autobiography titled “Wild Tales” coming out this Sep-tember.

Over his history-making life ensconced in the music industry, Nash has captured many memorable occasions and special moments with photographs. The com-pilation of these poignant artistic records has led to the creation of “Love, Gra-ham Nash” – a handmade fine press book that is a sublime celebration of the artist’s photography, music, and life. The collection focuses on the 1960s and 1970s, a period that Nash's era-defi ning artistry helped shape. Portraying friends, family, and fellow musi-cians, they capture the es-sence of a momentous time in American culture. The

collection includes Nash’s photos of band mates, other famous singers from Johnny Cash to Joni Mitchell, and handwritten notes of lyrics that are now second hand to generations of fans. A few copies of the coveted book, which was released as a limited edition keep-sake (80 copies), will be available for purchase dur-ing the exhibition.

“Graham Nash: The Art of Visual Harmony” opens Thursday, July 25, 2013 and runs through Sunday, August 4, 2013. Nash will be at the gallery to sign purchased artwork from 7 PM until 10 PM on Saturday, July 27. Graham anxiously awaits his sec-ond ever Ocean Galleries appearance. “I hope the Ocean Galleries audience does enjoy the exhibition as much as they did last time,” finishes Graham. “With my work, I like touching people’s hearts. I like open-ing people’s minds,” states this living legend. “The Art of Visual Harmony” prom-ises to do just that.

NORTH WILDWOOD – The rhythmic sound of blues music and the sweet smell of barbecue fi lled the air in North Wildwood during the 15th Annual New Jersey Barbecue Championship and Anglesea Blues Festival, July 12-14.

This year’s championship featured 68 competitive barbecue teams who battled it out for $10,000 in prize money. In the end there could only be one grand cham-pion and this year, Local Smoke BBQ, from Cookstown, took home the title, and bragging rights as the best barbecuers in the state.

The festival also featured live blues music from eight different bands and brought an estimated 80,000 people into town. “This is something unique to the Jersey Shore, and when you combine those two things (bar-becue and blues music) it’s just a perfect combination,” said event chairman Eric Shenkus.

The festivities didn’t stop at barbecue and blues; cook-ing demonstrations, food and clothing vendors, a wing eating contest, and beer tents took up six blocks and provided both the young and old with a variety of options to keep them entertained.

Proceeds from the festival go to the Anglesea Volunteer Fire Company. Over the past

Blues, BBQ Raise Fire Department Funds15 years the festival has raised enough money for the fi re department to purchase $1 million dollars in new equipment, “this is obviously our largest fund raiser for the volunteer fi re company, and because of that, the volunteer fi re company is able to save tax payers, and the town, a tremendous amount of money,” said Shenkus.

This year the fi re department also awarded $10,000 in scholarships to local high school students. Next year’s festival, which will be the 16th annual, is already in the works, “we just need to fi gure out how to stretch the island a little more to try to make it get even bigger,” said Shenkus.

While physically altering the island’s size is most likely out of the question, continuing the tradition of good music, good food, and good fun could be all the festival needs to continue its success.
