ED ITO RCLINT O ’ C O N N O R

As editor of the first issue of ALL HANDS, I have a simplerequest to make of each of our members.

Send me stories and photos!

They can be of current activities, notable events, words ofwisdom or experiences that might be of interest to other members, or suggestions of what you’d like to see. Three to four paragraphs, with a couple of photos, is all that isneeded for a single page topic.

Our newsletter benefits the flotilla in many ways by:• Raising our profile with Division 9 and District 7 by

showing them what we are doing. Otherwise, it is just statistics with the occasional notable names.

Improving our morale by highlighting individualmembers, and flotilla accomplishments and progresstoward goals.

Covering opportunities to advance individual traininggoals or support the flotilla activities.

Keeping our new members and existing members upto date and feeling involved with the flotilla.

Please send your articles and photos, or suggestions tome at [email protected]. If any new members would like to help by covering some events, let me know.

This cover photo was taken upon returning from a burial at sea service onMarch 8 for Ed Sweeney, an Auxiliarist with 40 years of service to the Auxiliary. The 45’ Response Boat (Medium) is a mainstay of many Coast Guard stations,

but does not have the multi-day endurance of the 85’ CGC Diamondback.

AC AD EMY I N T R O D U C T I O N MISS IONA D M I S S I O N S PARTNER BRUCE TALBOT

The United States Coast Guard Academy is one of our nation's five federalservice academies. Ranked as one of the best engineering schools in the nation, the Coast Guard Academy provides a tuition free college educationand a commission in the United States Coast Guard. Located on the shoresof the Thames River in historic New London, Connecticut, the Coast GuardAcademy is unique among the federal service academies in that applicantsdo not need a Congressional nomination to apply.

To attract top students, the academy has developed the summer AcademyIntroduction Mission (AIM) program for promising high school juniors. Theprogram allows over 500 high schoolers the ability to "test drive" the academy for one week in July to see if academy life is a good fit. AIM iswidely regarded as the most realistic service academy summer orientationprogram for high school students in the country. During their one weekstay, students are taught to sail and participate in a robotic engineeringcompetition.

The Coast Guard is assisted in its nationwide recruiting efforts by a cadre ofhighly trained volunteers known asAcademy Admissions Partners (AAP).One local partner is Flotilla 09-10 member Bruce Talbot who hasvolunteered as an AAP for the past 7 years. During February and MarchTalbot visited high school JROTC programs presenting a one hour multi-media classroom presentation to over 1,000 JROTC cadets in SouthwestFlorida. Talbot also devotes one week of his summer at the academyproviding logistics support for the AIM program.

"Volunteering as an AAP is my small way of paying back the Coast GuardAcademy for the amazing opportunities they provided my daughter, LT Erin(Talbot) Dougherty who graduated in 2013," Talbot said.

AMERICA’ SWATERWAY WATCH

With more than 95,000 miles of coastline, 290,000square miles of water, and 70,000,000 boaters, the USCoast Guard and first responders can’t do it alone.

As Auxiliarists, we are in a position not only to observeand participate ourselves, but also to use our publiceducation opportunities (vessel safety checks, boatingsafety classes, marina visits, and others) to involve the boating public in the America’s Waterway Watch.

We have the information, we have the materials tohand out - we just need to get out there and talk topeople who live, work, and play on our waterways.

ED SW EEN EYBURIAL AT SEA

National, District 7, Division 9, and numerous local flotilla Auxiliarists gathered at Coast Guard Station FortMyers Beach on March 8 for a final farewell to EdwardF. Sweeney. D7 DIRAUX CDR Vicencio-Roldanpresented the American flag for his service in the U.S.Army to his widow Terry Sweeney, followed by a serviceat sea on CGC Diamondback.

Originally from Long Island, Edward developed manyof the procedures used today for Auxiliary boat crewsand coxswains. Ed served as the Chief of Ops forOpSail ’86 and the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary, organizing over 3,500 Auxiliarists and 225 vessels. Edthen moved south with Terry Sweeney and devoted hisservice and exceptional computer and organizing skillsto District 7. Forty years is a testament to Ed’s longservice to the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

I have lived in sight of the ocean where thewater runs into land.

I have walked on the beach in the morningand left my tracks in the sand.

But musical waves have been calling andthe ocean is so wide and vast that I’ve struckfor the silver horizon and put out to sea at

N ATIO N ALSAFEBO ATIN G W EEKM AY 1 9 -2 5 , 2 0 1 8One of our most important Recreational Boating Safetyevents of the year is coming up - National Safe BoatingWeek. Florida is #1 in boating deaths. What can you do tomake this year’s event great and save lives?

Coast Guard statistics from 2016 show that 83% of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.

8 out of 10 were on vessels less than 21 feet, with openmotorboats having the highest casualty rates.

Many people don’t wear a life jacket because they thinkthey’ll have time to put them on if the weather changes ortrouble approaches. This video may change your mind:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvRkF-jnDZY

5/18 - Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day

Everyone will want to know why - and that’s your perfectopening to get our message out.

H URRICAN ESEASO N 2018

We all hope we never see another hurricane like<insert name>.

Previously, that was Charley. Now it’s Irma. After wreakingdevastation across the Caribbean as the strongest Atlantichurricane ever - a monster that traveled over 1,211 milesas a Category 5 storm and set a new worldwide record ofsustained 185mph winds for 37 hours- Irma targeted Florida on a south to north central path that left nowhere to hide with tropical storm force windscovering 70,000 square miles. Irma’s AccumulatedCyclone Energy (ACE), which is a measure of the totalwind energy of the storm over its lifetime, was greater than the first 8 named storms of 2017 (including Harvey)combined, and greater than 18 entire Atlantic hurricaneseasons in the satellite era (since 1966). Irma also madethe exact same landfall on Marco Island as Wilma (2005).

Were you well prepared for the evacuation? It’s not tooearly to commit your plans to paper and get your “go”bags ready.

KID D E FIREEXTIN G UISH ERRECALL

Check your fire extinguishers NOW. You may have one of these Kidde plastichandle or push button fire extinguishers.

Go to the Kidde website to identify which models you have. If you have anaffected model, Kidde will mail you a new one and ask you to return the oldone in the same box (shipping prepaid).

If you are a Vessel Examiner, be sure to take the opportunity to inform the owner of the recall while checking fire extinguishers.

http://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/support/product-alerts/recall-kidde-fire-extinguisher/

November 2, 2017 - In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Kidde announced a recall to replace certain Kidde fire extinguishers. The replacement program was initiated because certain fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to activate, posing a risk of failure to discharge. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard. The product recall involves two styles of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and plastic push-button fire extinguishers.
