Waniora Fete Performance
Last Saturday six of our Creative and
Performing Arts students from Years 8-11
performed at the Waniora Primary School
Fete. Our students entertained the large
audience with a range of popular acoustic
songs featuring beautiful vocal harmonies
that they put together themselves.
Congratulations to Tyler Wade in Year 8,
Carla Baker, Riley Walker, Marcie Morrow
and Josh Burton in Year 10, and Ethan W
Johnson in Year 11. The students were
rewarded with a food voucher for their
efforts.
Thank you to everyone who came and
supported our students.

The Sound of Silence After many years of juggling a full timetable of ensemble rehearsals,
elective classes and music lessons, our staff and students were very
happy to hear that our Music Practice Room was transformed into a
soundproof studio that can be used for recording during the holidays.
Two new walls were built and treated to reduce the transmission of
noise between the rooms and the results have been impressive. We are
now able to use the studio without disturbing classes and our students
are very excited about using the space for rehearsals and recording.
Secondary Schools
Choral Concert The Woonona HS Vocal Ensemble have attended and
enjoyed this concert for the past two years. This
year, all interested students are invited to attend “In
Concert” on Tuesday 22nd May at the Sydney Town
Hall. The concert costs $15 and will showcase the
best vocal and instrumental ensembles from NSW
Public Schools performing with acclaimed vocal
group The Idea of North. Please see Miss R Sharp in
the Music Staffroom for a permission note.
Sydney Symphony in Wollongong On Thursday 24th May, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will be visiting the Wollongong Town Hall on their regional tour. The
program for the concert has been designed for high school students and will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Movement
I, Elgar’s Sea Pictures, Where Corals Lie, Shostakovich’s The Golden Age, Movement III and Smetana’s Overture from The
Bartered Bride. This is a wonderful opportunity for all interested students to see a professional ensemble for just $15. Please see
Miss R Sharp for a permission note.
Aboriginal Dance Workshop
During Term 1, tutors from Bangarra Dance theatre and The Arts Unit travelled to centres across NSW conducting Aboriginal
Secondary Dance Workshops. 800 students from 121 schools across the state participated in this program and 117 were
shortlisted for consideration for the 30 places available for the NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company. These
shortlisted students stood out for their commitment and effort in the workshop activities. Congratulations to Angel Watson in
Year 11 who was shortlisted.

South Coast Dance Festival The countdown is on with only two weeks until the South Coast Dance Festival begins. Both companies have been busily re-
hearsing after school with Mrs Steele and Miss K Sharp and we can’t wait to see them perform. Company K’s item “What
Doesn’t Kill You” explores how our identity is shaped by experiences, like raw minerals transforming into gemstones. Company
Z’s item “Tomorrow” explores the many frustrations of daily life in an orphanage.
The festival runs from Wednesday 30th May to Saturday 2nd June at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong. Com-
pany K is performing on Wednesday and Saturday evening and the Friday matinee. Company Z is performing on Thursday and
Friday evening and the Saturday matinee. Tickets for the shows are available from online at www.merrigong.com.au Please
come along to support our talented students and staff, and many other public schools.
