Being mindful means keeping noise to a minimum (no cheerlead- ers or PA/amplification systems), no street parking or speeding near the park and making sure all garbage has been picked up and placed in trash receptacles prior to leaving. POOL USE AT REC CENTER PARTIES

Should a homeowner wish to utilize the pool during a Clubhouse Rental, be aware that the pool will not be closed down for private parties if it is during normal pool hours. Additionally, extra lifeguards must be hired (via the lifeguard company) and paid for separately from the Clubhouse Rental. Please contact Sweetwater Pools or the onsite office for more details. There is a limit of four guests per resident at the pool, so please be sure not to bring more than that number.

WILDLIFEHomeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including ven-omous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the com-munity, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes, especially the park in the back of the community. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. We have also received reports of alligators in the bayous nearby. Please use caution when walking the bayous - and be sure your dogs are careful as well.

The following information is required: Name, address, Vehicle make & model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the dif-ficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner com-plaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.

Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation.

There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

Adult ConversAtion GroupReal conversation is not a contest but makes room for many voices whose tone is not violent or abusive but instead as Michael Oakeshott said “humble and conversable.” It offers “the gift of the interval:” when we “look around upon the world without the sense of an enemy at one’s back or the insistent pressure to make up one’s mind.”

If you enjoy real conversation about current issues and events with a group having diverse backgrounds and perspectives, join us for a cup of coffee on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in room 303 of the Parish Activity Center from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All participants are encouraged to offer topics for the group and approximately a week before the meeting, a tentative agenda of topics will be dis-seminated. PitCheR OF the weekThe No. 18 UT Tyler Patriots end the regular season with an overall record of 31-9 and a 14-4 ASC record. The Texas-Dallas Comets and the Texas-Tyler Patriots will share the ASC East Division title. UT Tyler has now won six straight ASC East Division titles and have won seven East titles in the last eight seasons.

University of Texas-Tyler freshman right-hander Michael Blevins (Mayde Creek HS) tossed a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks in a 1-0 ASC East Division road win over LeTourneau. Blevins allowed just one extra-base hit - a double - and one runner past second base over the seven frames. His gem came in Game 2, locking up the three-game series for the Patriots.

katy Rebels giRls basketball assOCiatiOn The 8th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team placed second in their opening tournament of the season and in doing so qualified for Primetime Nationals in Dallas this summer. Tenacious defense and hustle led the team to the championship game where they lost a nail-biter in the closing minutes. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on a fantastic start to their AAU season together!

The Word of God, say the Baha’i Writings, provides inspiration, rejuve-nates souls, gladdens hearts and renews one’s sense of purpose.

The devotional is held on the 2nd Sunday of each month, from 4-5 pM and will be followed by a sharing of thoughts, ideas and ways to apply spiritual principles to one’s day-to-day affairs. Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston is excited to announce that

we will be starting up our Baby Bottle Blessings fundraising event.

The event will run from Mother’s Day (5/13/2012) thru Father’s Day (6/17/2012). Local residents pick up Baby Bottles at their

home church and fill them with change, bills and checks during

the month long event. This event spotlights the extensive resources

that Pregnancy Help Center provides to residents of 3 counties who

are faced with circumstances surrounding a present, potential or

former pregnancy.

Pregnancy Test, Peer Counseling, classes for Moms and Dads, as

well as limited ultrasound, and help with maternity clothing and

baby items are just some of the services that the Center provides

to their clients.

Anyone interested in participating should contact the center at 281-

578-0078, please ask for Lisa. If you happen to have a bottle out

from 2011, please know that Father’s Day would be a great time

to add to it and return it to Pregnancy Help Center.

We would like to extend our thanks, in advance, to our life saving

churches, their parishioners and congregations for their gifts. Thank

you for treasuring life thru the gifts of your treasure.

Houston livEstoCK sHoW and RodEo™ CooKs uP Houston’s Hot suMMER

BREaK™ BEnEFits annual EvEntThe Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today announced the

launch of a new summer festival, benefiting the Show and allowing

Houstonians an enjoyable, refreshing and entertaining break from

the city’s summer heat.

Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-

day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs

and mixologists, shopping, and live music. Held completely inside

Reliant Center, the summer event includes cooking demonstrations,

a beer brewing competition, margarita and martini.

Patrons also can explore both floors of Reliant Center to listen and

dance to live concerts featuring country, blues and jazz music, along

with disc jockeys playing a mix of club music.

“We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot

Summer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Live-

stock Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this

festival offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to

making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind,

offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!”

Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow

attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several

Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar

and coffee shop.

Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will di-

rectly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) char-

ity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better

agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since

its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283

million to the youth of Texas.

Tools 4 Teens Program Description: This program is designed for boys and girls, 12-18 years of age. Each session identifies key issues facing teens today, coupled with problem-solving, healthy decision-making and positive goal-setting. Each student will be given a clear message of hope and personal value. With this knowledge, it is our mission to empower students with the understanding that positive choices have positive consequences and poor choices have consequences that can have a life-changing impact.

Set on a Christian foundation, the Tools 4 Teens program teaches life-skills and character education. Within this interactive program students will learn information on current issues such as Peer Pres-sure, Substance Use and Their Consequences, Healthy Relation-ships, Anger/Forgiveness, Self-Worth, Respect for Others, Sexual Purity and Internet Safety. Testimonials will be shared by special guest speakers who have made good choices and poor choices in these critical areas.

The Tools 4 Teens program includes small group discussions and fine arts. Through our scrapbooking activity students create a book showcasing pictures of themselves, family and friends. Students are prompted to set positive goals and journal within their scrapbooks. This fine arts activity promotes positive self-reflection and serves as a keepsake students reflect on through teen years.

Cost: $215. *Includes all scrapbooking materials, personalized Tools 4 Teens book, autographed copy of Addict at 10, treasure box with “diamond”, journal, disk of all professional quality photos taken of your teen during camp plus eight hours of Christian-based instruction.

The Tools 4 Teens book will include ten photos of your teen, taken on site by our staff photographer. Your personalized copy will take two weeks to produce and will be shipped directly to you following the camp.

Reserve your spot today by sending payment to:Tools 4 Life Books, 1351 Blackheath Ct. Katy, TX 77494

You can register and pay online on our secure site www.tools4life-books.org. Call 832-606-6026 for questions. Please check our website for availability. Once the camp is full, registration will close and will be posted on our website.

Hosting a foreign excHange student is easier tHan you may tHink

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students, the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. For more information and requirements, please contact Heather Wells by phone 281-770-3414 or by email [email protected].

Fort Bend County LiBraries Go Green, saVe money

Fort Bend County Libraries is saving county taxpayers’ money by using email and telephone notifications rather than mailing out letters. Patrons may receive notices by email, telephone or text message about books they have requested or that are overdue. By sending out notices electronically, the library saves money on the costs of paper, printing and postage, which helps preserve the environment as well.

Library patrons can manage their online library account by clicking on “My Account” on the library’s webpage. To verify or add a telephone or email account to the record, simply go to “Contact Information and Preferences,” then “Preference for receiving library notices” and select “email address,” “telephone” or “TXT messaging” from the drop-down list to choose the format by which library information notices should be received. Patrons who opt to receive text messages will need to ensure that their cell phone number is included on their library record and indicate which cell phone provider they use by selecting a choice from the drop-down menu. Standard text-messaging rates apply, based on the patron’s cell-phone plan.

Patrons who do not already have an email address may sign up for a free email account at www.google.com (Gmail), www.yahoo.com (Yahoo mail) or www.msn.com (Hotmail). Librarians are available to help set up an email account if needed or patrons may attend one of the libraries’ free classes on getting started with email. The libraries’ computers are available for patrons to check their email anytime. Fort Bend County Libraries does not sell or give patrons’ email addresses to other parties.

For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or ask at any of the branch libraries.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RuOK PROGRAMFort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated pro-gram called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the partici-pant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Acad-emy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforce-ment of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATSThe primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also:(QVXUHVWKDWUDELHVYDFFLQDWLRQDUHFXUUHQW$OORZVIRUTXLFNLGHQWLILFDWLRQLQFDVHRIDELWHLQFLGHQW3URYLGHVUHYHQXHWRRIIVHWWKHDGPLQLVWUDWLRQFRVWVRIWKH animal control program.

VACCINATIONRabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.”

Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our vol-unteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ suc-cesses at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. HouSton cHildren’S cHaritYJoin a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are search-ing for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.

Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

Standup for KidSHow would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through vol-unteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, cloth-ing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids,

Adopt A US SoldierAdopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serv-ing in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States.

After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III

When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
