Our Commmitment: To cater to our customers’ needs by providing quality merchandise, outstanding service and competitive pricing with on-time delivery.

We launched our company in 1998 with the introduction of one product – our handmade Belgian landscape linen panels. We believed that we could continue the tradition of making panels the same way the old masters did, while maintaining a strict adherence to archival standards. This commitment to quality and workmanship has helped us grow our small family-

owned business, allowing us to expand our panel lines and to add other premium supplies.

Now offering more than four different canvases, six substrates and twenty-seven standard sizes, we continue a new tradition while focusing on our core principals of providing courteous, personalized service, and building recognition for our brand in everything we do. We appreciate your support through the years and we will continue to strive to earn your business in the future.

About our catalog . . . Our current catalog is produced using a varitey of today’s technologies. Adobe’s Flash for Online viewing and PDF (Portable Document File) format for offline viewing and printing are just two of the options for expanding the interactive experinence. As a result of these new formats, we are able to keep our catalog current by making regular changes as we add new products.

Bill Anton

www.BillAntonStudio.com

Bill Anton was born in Chicago, Illinois and later moved to Prescott, Arizona. He chose to live in the west because he is so inspired by the Sierra Nevada, Sangre de Cristo, and, “. . .

a hundred other mountain ranges within the majestic Rocky Mountains.”

Bill graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science degree in English. His true love, however, was depicting the beautiful scenery and the wonderful cowboy images of the great west. He comments, “I want the viewer to feel the drama of the atmosphere and the mystery of a western night. An artist under the spell of the west has the privilege of marshalling the virtues of landscape, figure, and equine painting into one supremely paintable subject: the American cowboy.”

Anton’s award-winning work has been displayed at the Prix de West, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, The National Center for American Western Art, The Thomas Gilcrease Museum, The Old West Museum and The National Museum of Wildlife Art.

“I have always felt that an artist’s time away from painting is time wasted. SourceTek panels allow me a quick, reliable and high quality surface for outdoor or studio work.” -Bill Anton

The high standards used in making our archival panels are the reason SourceTek has earned a name which is synonymous with quality. All of our panels are meticulously handcrafted using the finest materials available.

Our Baltic birch substrate panels offer excellent strength and durability while maintaining a lightweight profile. We use the finest grade of Baltic birch plywood available, offering a consistently smooth surface. It is our hardwood of choice because it offers rigidity while still maintaining flexibility. The wood substrate, used by many of the old masters, has proven itself to be one of the most stable over time. Our Gatorboard® substrate is the most lightweight, warp-resistant panel available. While these panels are more fragile than the birch panels, the Gatorboard® we use in them has the strongest, most durable wood fiber facers (surrounding the high-density polystyrene foam center) in the industry.

Our hardboard substrate is made with wood fiber and steam that is heated and pressed to form this very strong support. We use only untempered, ph neutral hardboard.

All of our substrates are available in our Natural Line® and can be used with gesso, shellac, or canvas applications.

Our panel lines are available in standard sizes ranging from 4”x 6” to 24”x 30”. We also handcraft custom sizes in most types of panels!

“For years, I made my own plein air panels by mounting oil-primed linen to Baltic birch wood using acid-free adhesive. The process was time consuming, but the quality of the panel was superior to anything commercially available. SourceTek prepares their panels the same way. These beautifully crafted panels give me the quality surface I demand and save me precious hours of preparation time.” -Joe Anna Arnet

Scott Burdick

Scott Burdick was born in Chicago, Illinois. In high school he began taking life drawing classes at the American Academy of Art

under the legendary Bill Parks. After finishing the Academy, Burdick continued his studies at the Palette and Chisel Club where he met his wife, painter Susan Lyon. Their home in North Carolina, which is surrounded by nature, serves as the perfect resting place after their many trips abroad to such destinations as Europe, China, Mexico, and Thailand.

Ideas for his award-winning paintings come from everywhere. Scott states, “What makes subjects attractive to me are the same things that attract us all. The beauty of a young girl, the character of a weathered face, the solitude of a farm at sunset, or even the story itself behind someone or something that makes it interesting.”

“The people at SourceTek have been supplying artists like us with materials of the highest quality for so long that we imagine most galleries in the country have their panels and canvases hanging on their walls! We like their products not only because of how superior they are, but also because the people there are so nice and easy to deal with!” -Scott Burdick & Susan Lyon

“I have been making my own panels since 1976, but have found SourceTek’s products to be more economical and reliable with better quality and workmanship than the panels I made. I appreciate the fast service too!”

“I used to make my own oil-primed linen panels for cost and quality reasons. I was thrilled to have found SourceTek panels. They use the same archival quality materials to create a great product at a great price. It is such a joy to spend my time painting instead! I use them for studio painting and en plein air, and my students are enjoying these panels as well. I recommend these panels for every oil painter concerned about quality painting products.” -Kathy Cooper

Kathy Cooper was raised in San Antonio, Texas by parents who encouraged her artistic talents early in her life. It was

at Southwest Texas State University that Kathy decided on a career in commercial art and advertising. After 20 years in these fields, Kathy turned her focus back to fine art. She paints from life in her studio in Westford, Massachusetts, and “en plein air” around New England.

Cooper is inspired by the beauty of fresh flowers set around things of the past for her still lifes, as well as the diversity in landscapes. Her desire to share her knowledge in fine art led her to open her own small atelier in her Massachusetts studio, and to conduct workshops around the country in such locations as the artistically historical Monhegan Island, Maine.

She has been very involved in national art organizations such as Women Artists of the West and the American Impressionist Society where she has served as President and Show Chair. Her work has been published in Southwest Art, Plein Air Magazine, American Art Collector and Art of the West.

“When working outdoors, I look for materials that will help make the experience easier. SourceTek canvas panels are, for me, the perfect choice. They are the most superior support I have painted on, bar none! These canvas panels are a joy to use. They are lightweight, durable, and have a lovely neutral tone with just the right amount of texture for any kind of possible brushwork. I recommend these panels for every plein air painter.”

Glenn Dean

“SourceTek panels are always reliable in their consistency, precision, and use of the highest quality materials. Whether I am working in the studio or in the field, SourceTek offers a variety of sizes and supports, making them my first choice in canvas panels.” -Glenn Dean

Glenn recognized his interest for art at the age of 13, but didn’t realize his love for painting the landscape until his early 20’s.

His path became clear when he first saw examples of work by the California and Western landscape painters of the early 1900’s. He states, “Their work emphasized the importance of seeing the color of light combined with interesting compositions and seemingly effortless designs, while carefully observing the simple and basic characteristics of a specific location”. Basically a self-taught artist, Glenn has a passion and joy for discovering answers to the complexities found in the works of the past masters. He believes that their paintings reveal the spiritual element of the landscape, which he feels should be the goal of the landscape painter.

Dean has appeared in several national magazines including Western Art and Architecture, Southwest Art, Art of the West, and American Artist. He has won a number of awards, including the first ever “Emerging Artist Award” presented by Art and Antiques magazine. He is also the recipient of the Grand Prize and Artists’ Choice awards at the inaugural Tucson/Sonoran Desert Museum Plein Air Invitational.

Gay Faulkenberry

“As a professional artist, having good quality materials is top priority. SourceTek canvas pan-els are the perfect fit for my outdoor work as well as many of my smaller works done in the studio. The linen canvas is what I’ve used for many years and knowing they are put together with care and quality craftsmanship is key. It’s exciting to see how SourceTek has grown and continues to expand their business to include a wide range of top supplies.” -Gay Faulkenberry

Known for her impressionistic approach to color and light, Gay Faulkenberry is renowned for plein-air paintings of urban and rural landscapes and for studio paintings of intimate

still lifes, florals, and interiors. She states, “Taking my pochade box outdoors into nature excites me as much as setting up a still life arrangement or re-creating the ambience of a room setting. Whatever the subject, I’m inspired by the way light reveals form and essence.”

A native Oklahoman, Faulkenberry transitioned from watercolor to oils in the early 80’s after independent studies with Russian master Sergei Bongart. Subsequent workshops with Ray Vinella, Ned Jacob, and Mark Daily refined her skills. Other artists who have influenced her include Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase and Emil Carlsen.

Faulkenberry often serves as an art juror, and her work has been featured in publications such as Southwest Art, Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, and American Artist. Her paintings have been included in exhibitions at The Haggin Museum, the Academy Art Museum, and the Gilcrease Museum. A Signature Member of the prestigious Plein-Air Painters of America since 1996, she served as PAPA president and spokesperson in 2008-2009.

George HallmarkBorn and raised in north-central Texas, George Hallmark’s first career was as an architectural designer and commercial artist before he turned to easel painting. Even with this change of profession, Hallmark has come full circle to his architectural roots. His love of historic forms of architecture is obvious in the delineation of stucco walls, tile roofs, and long shadows in his unique painterly style.

Voted the official Texas State Artist in 1988, his work can be found in many prestigious private and corporate collections, including those of Texas Instruments, the Texas Capital, the Booth Western Art Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Hallmark’s work has been featured in such publications as Art of the West, Western Art Collector, and Southwest Art. He is an annual participant in the Prix de West, American Masters at the Salmagundi Club, and the Eiteljorg Museum’s Quest for the West show where he won the Artist of Distinction Award in 2010.

“It is all about time. For years I prepared my own painting surface. I started out on Masonite panels, graduated to stretching linen, and then began mounting canvas on board. Each process took time. When I discovered SourceTek I was overjoyed. No sawing, no glue and no waiting... what a relief! The best part is that their oil primed linen panels on Baltic birch are far better than what I could make. It’s all about time!” -George Hallmark

Ralph Oberg

www.RalphOberg.com

The wild mountain country has always been close to Ralph Oberg’s heart, and his work focuses on his love for untrammeled country. Ralph’s early works featured wildlife, but

then evolved into landscapes. Recently, wildlife has begun to reappear in his award-winning landscape paintings, combining his natural drawing ability and accumulated knowledge of animals with a more impressionistic painting technique.

A Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of America, Oberg has been featured in numerous prestigious publications, and his paintings hang in such prominent locations as the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Colorado State Capitol Building.

Today Ralph and his wife, artist Shirley Novak, sketch the beauty they find near and far and then develop larger works in their studio and home in southwest Colorado.

“These panels represent the quality in materials and workmanship that I have come to expect. I can now dedicate more time to my painting instead of making them myself.” -Ralph Oberg

As unique to her devotion to 19th century art is the fact that Constance has been intimately involved with dog training and competing in AKC events since her youth. Born and raised

in Detroit, Michigan, her first memory is of her mother presenting her with a book on the work of artist Rosa Bonheur.

During her academic studies, which culminated in a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin, she gained insight into the forms of the animals she loves by spending much of her time in anthropology labs studying articulated skeletons of dogs and horses.

Constance Payne’s exquisite oil paintings and pastels are conceptualized and crafted in the tradition of 19th century Animaliers. From the onset of the support systems for her paintings and drawings to the completed work, her lifelong study and studio practices pay homage to the working methods of the 19th century animal portrait painters and the French Academy Atelier system.

Matt Smith

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Matt Smith began his studies in art while his family lived in Geneva, Switzerland during his teenage years. Smith later graduated from Arizona State

University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. Somewhat disappointed with the school’s abstract-oriented art program, he spent significant personal time studying the traditional styles of many prominent landscape masters.

A resident of Arizona, he developed a deep attachment to and respect for the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Smith states, “I’m particularly inspired by pristine locations. I enjoy working in areas where one can travel for miles without seeing the influence of man.” Matt also

enjoys painting in other locations throughout the United States and Europe.

His award-winning paintings have been displayed at the most prominent shows and invitationals in the United States, and have been featured in numerous national publications since 1993.

“SourceTek offers the ideal artist panel combining portability, durability and permanence. Their quality, service and workmanship are second to none. I’ve used these panels for years, both in the field and in the studio.” -Matt Smith

Don Stone, one of the few full members of the National Academy of Design, is an internationally known modern impressionist

painter. Few artists have so successfully mastered the many different paint mediums and varied means of expression as Don has. The American tradition of realism and the sheer visual pleasure he evokes are evident in all of his work, from his vigorous, moving watercolors to the painterly quality of his oils.

Stone’s work has been featured in several books and publications, and has earned numerous distinguished awards, including two Greenshields Foundation grants.

Don resides in Maine and enjoys painting the New England landscapes and characters which embody the American Heritage that inspires him.

“In my years of painting I have been in search of what SourceTek has come out with - the perfect canvas panels. They use the same Claessens Belgian linen that I use for my larger paintings and mount it on a lightweight birch plywood, which makes the panels convenient for travel. In my opinion this is the best canvas panel on the market today.” -Don Stone, N.A.

George Strickland

www.GeorgeStricklandStudio.com

George Strickland began his career in the field of commercial art, later owned a successful design firm, then worked as an art consultant to a large computer company. In 1989, he

and his wife moved out west to dedicate his time to painting.

Strickland has a unique approach to scene selection. When finding a location to set-up, he looks for scenes he can visualize in paint strokes so as to enhance the qualities of contrast, color, patterns, textures and shapes. He says, “I believe some of the most beautiful paintings on this earth are not just paintings of things, but more profoundly, a statement about those things. So, I make the concept a big part of my goal before my brush goes to work.”

His beautiful landscapes and seascapes are regularly featured in the most distinguished invitational shows, and he has earned numerous prestigious awards throughout his career including Gold and Silver Medals and Artists’ Choice awards. Strickland is a Signature Member and past president of the Plein Air Painters of America, a member of the Northwest Rendezvous, and an “Out of State” member of the California Art Club.

“A few years ago I did the math on how my time was best spent as an artist. My conclusion was that I needed to concentrate my efforts on drawing and painting, not making materials. I found, for instance, that quality ready-made panels like those from SourceTek cost me less than 1% of the price of a small painting. It made sense then, and it makes sense now, to have professional-grade panels made by professionals.” -George Strickland

The acrylic-primed 12TS cotton surface is ideal for both acrylic and oil applications. With a 30 thread-per-inch warp and a 37.5 thread-per-inch weft, it has a medium-weight landscape texture with a tight weave and excellent strength. It is available only at SourceTek in the United States.

The single oil-primed #13 linen has a smooth, even texture. With a 57.9 thread-per-inch warp and a 58.4 thread-per-inch weft, it is well-suited for portrait and detail painting.

The single oil-primed #66 linen offers an even, medium texture, tight weave, and excellent strength. With a 43.2 thread-per-inch warp and a 36.8 thread-per-inch weft, it is the world’s most popular choice of linen for landscape painting.

We offer Claessens® linen and canvas by the roll. Claessens® produces only the highest quality hand-primed linen and cotton, with each roll going through several processes to create a flawless finish. Starting with the finest unprimed surface, the canvas is inspected, smoothed with a pumice, cleaned, and sized. The linen is oil-primed with linseed oil and zinc white and allowed to dry for 3 days in a dry air oven before the final coat of titanium white is applied. Although we don’t offer the cotton by the roll, we describe

it here for your reference with regards to our panels. It is coated with an acrylic binder and then titanium white.

Claessens®

Canvases

Claessens® manufactures more than 40 different canvases.

SourceTek occasionally orders specialty canvases in limited quantities. We are pleased to extend this offer to you. This is your opportunity to order full-size rolls of canvases you would like to try or perhaps use on a regular basis.

Ordering from Claessens® is pretty routine for us. Planning is key. Not only do we have the manufacturing to take into consideration, but we also have to plan for the 6000 miles the order must travel to get here.

That being said, it can take 8-10 weeks (from the date we order) for orders to be received. Please take this into consideration when placing your order. As always, we will not process your credit card until we are prepared to ship your order to you.

In addition we will not be able to offer these rolls by the yard. However, if you are sharing a roll with someone, we will cut or split the roll at no charge. Naturally, there will be additional shipping charges if delivery is to more than one address.

Red Lion® 520,Acrylic-Primed Polyfax

Fredrix® was founded in 1868 by E. H. Friedrichs. Although, he spent much of his time on trains and coaches drumming up business, he was much more than a salesman. He was a businessman, a chemist, an inventor, an innovator and he was the first in America to manufacture artist canvas for the trade.

Although the art of manufacturing artist canvas has changed since the 1800s, the product made today is very similar to the canvas they made over 140 years ago. The name was changed (Friedrichs to Fredrix®), but their mission has not. Their most popular canvases are universally primed for oil, acrylic or alkyd paints, and primed the old fashioned way . . . picked, pumiced and primed by hand.

“Before these professional archival panels were available, I made my own panels using oil primed linen. I know the time, materials and cost incurred making a quality panel. It makes sense for me to paint and have the experts at SourceTek make the panels. I use the Premium Lines 66 and 13 for my plein air and studio work. I have come to depend on SourceTek for top notch service as well as the quality products they offer.” -Elizabeth Tolley

Elizabeth “Libby” Tolley is an American landscape painter working both on location and in the studio. Her goal when painting is to capture the

essence of the land and her connection to it. Living on California’s Central Coast, her focus has been painting the rural landscape from life. As a lifelong, self motivated student Libby has developed her artistic abilities by seeking mentors who guided the development of her talent. Working first in watercolors, and then expanding to include oil painting, Libby’s career has attracted the attention of editors, museum directors, gallery owners, and collectors.

Her paintings have been included in many important exhibitions, art magazines and books. As many as four times a year she teaches workshops, and then dedicates the rest of the year to painting. Libby is the author of the immensely popular and informative book, Oil Painter’s Solution Book— Landscapes: Over 100 Answers to Your Oil Painting Questions (2007, North Light Books, Cincinnati, OH). Morgan Weistling was inspired by his father, Howard. From the age of 19 months, Howard taught Morgan

the art of drawing. “My dad and I bonded together with drawing and spoke to each other with pictures. It was here that art became a language for me.”

After illustrating movie posters in a career that spanned 14 years and touched every movie studio in California, Morgan decided to start painting. His exquisite paintings showcase his exceptional drawing ability and skilled control over values, and his subject matter often depicts other eras such as historical Old West characters.

Morgan’s award-winning work is constantly displayed at the country’s most prestigious painting events and invitationals. Morgan and his wife, artist JoAnn Peralta, live in California with their two daughters.

“SourceTek panels are superior to anything else I have ever used. They are primarily talked about for plein air painting, but I am a figure painter and find them to be fantastic for portraits and figures and use them on many of my gallery paintings. Miracle Muck®

Miracle Muck® is a water-soluble, non-yellowing, low-acid ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer emulsion binding agent that is heat re-activatable and dries completely inert. Once applied to a non-metallic surface, it becomes a tough, permanently flexible polymer film capable of creating a superior bond between two surfaces. It is often used to join wood to wood, fabric to wood, fabric to foam core, fabric to Gatorboard®, and fabric to mat board. It cleans up easily with warm water.

It is used by many conservators in the restoration of old works of art, because of its ideal properties (i.e., being a low-acid, heat re-activatable EVA glue).

“Winter Over the San Juans”The subject is his painting, “Winter Over the San Juans”. From start to finish Matt will guide you through the process while sharing his experience on how to work from field studies and photographic reference to create a painting in the studio.

Matt may complete this painting in 1 hour and 15 minutes, but what you will learn is that it was actually 30 years in

the making. Although the focus may be about winter in the mountains, his advice carries over into his broad experience with other subject matter. In addition, there is a 12-minute bonus section.

The bonus section includes Matt discussing design and composition examples plus a slide show on a selection of his field studies. The disc is structured so that the viewer can select specific starting points, which include 24 “scene selections”. This enables the viewer to re-play areas of particular interest.

“Plein Air, Painting the American Landscape” Series

Far more than a “how-to” show, the “Plein Air, Painting the American Landscape” PBS series is a celebration of our natural world, a visual retreat to our nation’s beautiful places, and an exploration of the rich and colorful history of American landscape painting. From the founding of the Cape Cod School by Charles Hawthorne in 1899 and gathering of the Taos Society of Artists a few years later, to location demonstrations by today’s leading landscape artists, viewers will discover the roots of this uniquely American art form and why painting en plein air is once again at the forefront of American representational art.

Wayne Wolfe

“When I studied with Robert Lougheed in Santa Fe, he stressed the importance of always being a pro -- in your attitude, in your integrity, and with your materials. For me to make my own panels is a waste of precious time. That’s why I thankfully use SourceTek panels for plein air painting. I have confidence in their professionalism.” -Wayne Wolfe

American Painter Wayne Wolfe was born in Kansas City, and graduated from the University of Kansas with a journalism degree.

His exposure to art began in childhood with his father, Byron Wolfe, who was an early member of the Cowboy Artists of America.

After attending college, working in radio and advertising, and serving in the Army, Wolfe decided to fulfill his need for independence and left the business world to paint. He studied with Robert Lougheed in Santa Fe and apprenticed with him for six years. Lougheed insisted that he learn the language of nature by painting landscapes on location in order

to see the best value, color and edges. While in Santa Fe, Wayne also studied with Tom Lovell to learn about line, mass and anatomy.

Wayne primarily paints the Rocky Mountain West, but painting trips have also taken him to Canada, New England, Europe and the British Isles. His exceptional work is displayed at the country’s most elite shows, and has won numerous awards including the very prestigious Prix de West award. His work has also been featured in many national publications and books.

Dan Young

Dan Young was born in Denver, and grew up in western Colorado. After graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art he moved to Dallas to pursue the commercial art field. Even

with a successful Illustration career, the landscape was always calling him back. In 1989, he returned to Colorado to begin painting full time. Young enjoys painting the rural life of the west, the ranches that dot the mountain valleys and river bottoms. He states,“ Though I’m a landscape painter, I like introducing hints of man’s presence in the landscape. Sometimes I feel I’m in a race to paint a disappearing way of life. It’s hard to watch so many of the family farms and ranches being swallowed up by development.”

Young clings strongly to the importance of painting from life. He feels painting from life was the most important stepping stone for his career. “I still spend about 50 percent of my time painting on location. That’s what drew me to painting, the love of being out in nature and trying to accurately capture it on canvas. I still get excited when I head out for a day of painting. It doesn’t matter if I paint in Alaska or out my front door, it helps keep me fresh to paint on location,” he says.

Competitions

For more than fifteen years we have produced and shipped worldwide a catalog that displays full pages of our major award-winning Endorsers' work, along with information about our complete line of American-made premium artist panels and other fine art supplies. This year will be no exception as we move forward in preparing one of our most exciting catalogs to date. More than a catalog of products, it is a catalogue of some of the finest artists in the country and their work, presented in a high-quality e-booklet format.

We have often fielded telephone calls inquiring how artists can become featured in our catalog as well as on our website as the "Featured Artist". Quite simply it is primarily based on national merit and the recognition our Endorsers (who come from our pool of customers) have earned. And it is for this same reason that we have asked them to participate

in helping to identify and ultimately reward the up and coming artists. So with each Cover Contest we are accepting submissions for consideration to be showcased on the front cover of our catalog.

We are grateful to our esteemed judges, Bill Anton, Ralph Oberg, Constance Payne and Matt Smith for taking the time out of their busy schedules to help make our first Cover Contest a success!

Don’t miss your chance to enter our next Cover Competition! Be sure you are on our email list and watch your inbox for early notification.

And a special thanks to our sponsors for this issue:
