“Growing up near the water, I started sailing in sailing summer camp when I was 9 years old. I really enjoyed being outside, on the water, playing around on boats and being with my friends. I played many other sports all throughout growing up but in the summers I concentrated on achieving all the levels of sailing. It wasn't until I was about 15 that I narrowed my focus in on sailing and racing. When fun was met by challenges, goals were formed which hurdled me down a path of success, ultimately competing in two consecutive Olympic Games. What's really great about sailing is that it's a lifelong sport” ~Nikola Girke

"As a youth, sailing around Nova Scotia was one of the many ways to get out and enjoy all of our lakes and ocean. Later in life, when I began sailing competitively, the local support from the sailing community, along with great coaches/mentors helped me realize my dream of achieving excellence." ~Paul Tingley

Foreword: Whether your sailors are gearing up to be on Canada’s Olympic Sailing Team one day, or just looking to have fun on the water this summer, the CYA’s new sail training program will have them excited to sail. The CANSail dinghy programming has been designed with sailor’s age and developmental stage in mind. CANSail refers to Canada’s updated standards in learn-to-sail programming. The standards – and the programs the Instructors will deliver to meet those standards – are designed to provide all learning sailors with the solid foundation of sailing skills and experiences to then allow them to stick with sailing – at your club - in any sort of environment – Performance Race, Instruction, Coaching, Offshore, Program Leadership..... Of course, whichever stage the sailor is at the program offers fun and challenge to keep them coming back! CANSail Club Pack This CANSail Club Pack has been put together to help sailing schools and yacht clubs across Canada implement CANSail programming in 2012 and beyond. It contains helpful guides to assist you in designing your program offerings, and transition from CYA’s traditional programming. About the CYA Established in 1931, the CYA is Canada’s national governing body for the sport of sailing. The Association promotes sailing through collaboration with our partners, the Provincial Sailing Associations, member clubs, schools, and many individual stakeholders.

Acknowledgements

Volunteers and staff of the CYA and the Provincial Sailing Associations have worked tirelessly for countless hours over the course of three years to revise and refine the systems and programs that develop sailors from entry level through to competency to member provincial and national teams and to develop as leaders and sailors for life.

Technical expertise was contributed first to bring us to the details in the Long Term Sailor Development framework (LTSD) – and then to implement the LTSD into the updated learn to sail standards - the CANSail programming.

The following people and organizations are a few that have supported the activities that have brought the CANSail program to sailing schools across Canada. THANK YOU!

CANSail Introduction What is CANSail? CANSail refers to Canada’s updated sailor training standards. CANSail Dinghy is CYA’s dinghy program for clubs to deliver across Canada. CANSail is a leading sail training initiative to foster performance in sailing and life long participation in the sport.

Why CANSail? CYA traditional standards programming is tried and true, but exists unaltered from its establishment 23 or more years ago! CANSail is designed to be a set of progressive learn to sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills. It allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidates key skills and solid experiences before adding complex skills.

How is CANSail rolling out in 2012? CANSail is ready to be delivered in 2012 at all sailing clubs, schools and camps in Canada. Even if you are delivering traditional programming in 2012 (White, Bronze), as long as your Instructors are CANSail trained, they will be accessing the CANSail tools and your sailors will receive CANSail programming and CANSail progress reports cards , official stickers, and certificates.

Who is affected by CANSail implementation? Sailors in dinghy programs....will experience a new type of fun and learning! Instructors.... trained in CANSail will access the CANSail Instructor Tools! Clubs & Sailing Schools..... with CANSail trained Instructors, your club will access tools and guidelines to administer and deliver the programming!

Where can I get resources and tools? This Pack contains guiding resources! Check with your Provincial Sailing Association or sailing.ca to find out about accessing administration tools (online checklists & Technical Instructor Packs!) and Instructor training opportunities.

Transitioning to CANSail in 2012

What do I need to do to run CANSail programming at my club ?

Have your existing staff take the CANSail Instructor training module – accessible early in 2012 through your PSAs and at sailing.ca. Completion of this module will train current CYA instructors to deliver programs to the CANSail standard. For example: A CANSail trained CYA White Sail Instructor will become White Sail Instructor, CANSail 1 & 2 trained.

Register with your Provincial Sailing Association as a CANSail program deliverer.

Update your programs’ promotions as being delivered according to the new CANSail standards. Use the promotional tools in this pack!

Access and use the tools.... the CANSail program schedules, lesson plans, online checklists, administrative resources.

Prepare to order program support resources for sailors (i.e. Workbooks), and tangible progress reports and stickers (for 100% of the sailors) and certificates (for CANSail standard achievers)

Who can teach the CANSail levels? What about my existing instructors?

1- Current instructor staff must take the CANSail module accessible through PSAs and on sailing.ca

2 - Any new instructors taking an instructor course in 2012 will receive the CANSail training.

What program should last year’s sailors take? Where do I place new sailors?

What should my 2012 programs be?

What about my opti, double handed and single handed race teams, how do they fit into CANSail ?

The CANSail programming – from CANSail 3 & up, has been aligned to allow for development programming for the race team sailors while they carry on with the teams’ activities.

What about my fleet of boats? What does each CANSail level need to be taught on?

The CANSail Dinghy program can be delivered on any kind of dinghy sailboat. The levels are not boat specific and can accommodate both single and double handed boats.

If sailors were excited to do spinnaker and trapeze in Bronze 4 & 5 how do we keep them excited in CANSail 3 & 4?

If market demands, Instructors can build spinnaker and trapeze learning into programming while working toward achieving CANSail 4 standards. Ideally, specialization learning takes place after CANSail 6, but in transition periods, an option is to deliver Chutes & Wires 1 concurrently with CANSail 5, or following CANSail 5.

Example 1

Programming keeps sailors coming back for more! Skills are consolidated and applied in challenge & complexity is added to result in a sailor with the foundation to carry on in race, leadership, & or specialization. These programs replace CYA Silver & Gold courses. These levels of programming are taught by a CANSail 5 & 6 Instructor (or CANSail trained LTR Instructor)

CANSail 3 & 4

CANSail 5 & 6

CANSail Chutes &

Wires 1 & 2

Introductory programming with a focus on fun, safety and fundamental skills, CANSail 1 replaces CYA White Sail I course; and CANSail 2 replaces White Sail II & III courses. These levels of programming are taught by a CANSail 1 & 2 Instructor (or CANSail trained White Sail Instructor)

CANSail 3 & 4 progressively builds and develops the skills in CANSail 1 & 2, with a focus on keeping the sailor engaged with stage appropriate challenges and learning. CANSail 3 replaces Bronze IV & Learn to Race courses, and CANSail 4 replaces Bronze V & Learn to Race courses. These are taught by a CANSail 3 & 4 Instructor (or CANSail trained Bronze Sail Instructor).

CANSail Chutes and Wires 1 programming teaches the double handed skills to sail with spinnaker & trapeze. It counts on the sailor holding foundation of skills and experiences to the CANSail 5 or 6 standard. Chutes & Wires 2 trains performance applications of double handed sailing with spinnaker and trapeze. These levels of programming are taught by a CANSail Chutes and Wires instructor (or CANSail trained Bronze Sail Instructor)
