Leadership Council Commissioning

What comes to mind when you hear the word “ritual”? While much of what we do in church is ritual, rituals are a part of everyday life. The definition of ritual includes actions repeated with regularity and precision (think morning or bed time rituals), rites performed in church, as well as the form of a ceremony that brings people together.

Birthday celebrations have many elements of ritual, with special decorations, a general format and a ritual song. I recently went to a parishioner’s birthday party that was a joyful celebration. Thedecorations were elaborate, the food was delicious, and there was dancing, too! While everyone mingled during the dinner, when it came time for the cake, everyone gathered around with attention. Some family members spoke kind words to the birthday girl, and we concluded with a singing of happy birthday that was particularly joyful. Even though there was a lot of fun, there was a structure and flow to the evening that reminded me of ritual.

The reason I’m talking about ritual is because rituals are essential for us to bond as a family, whether at the home or in the church. When we participate in these rituals with attention and energy,we experience a connection that is both deeply satisfying and human. For example, why do so many fans spend hours of time and hundreds of dollars for a football experience on the pro or college level? As good as the picture is on your home TV, you can’t beat the experience of sharing in the connection with fellow fans. This connection is only heightened by ritual moments such as the pregame songs and chants during the game.

With that in mind, I want to announce a ritual that we will have in our cluster in September. On three consecutive Sundays this month, Fr. John and I will be commissioning the members of theleadership councils at three separate Masses. The short ritual will be towards the end of Mass. All councils will be commissioned at their home church.- Our Lady of Peace Leadership Council will be commissioned on Sunday, September 15 at 10am Mass. - St. James Leadership Council will be commissioned on Sunday, September 22 at 8am Mass.- St. Philip Leadership Council will be commissioned on Sunday, September 29 at 4pm Mass. (Please note that we will start a regular Sunday afternoon 4pm Mass at St. Philip on a trial basis starting September 22)

I will also post the names of council members visibly in church during the month. I thank our Leadership Council Members for their willingness to serve!

Peace,Fr. Matthew

First Eucharist Parent Meeting There will be a meeting for all parents with students enrolled in faith formation who will be making their First Eucharist including those who attended the summer program held on September 26, at OLOP in the church hall at 6:30 pm. This meeting is for parents only to discuss preparations for First Eucharist. Your attendance is very important.

Treasures from our Tradition Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially

the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of Gods people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was full, conscious, and active, a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered.--James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

CDA Meeting Court St. Philip CDA will meet on September 10 at 5:30pm in the church hall. We hope you enjoyed your summer break, see you at the meeting!

Post Summer Challenges With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekends Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this years Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekends scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with timid deliberations and unsure plans. Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to let the good you do be voluntary. Jesus instructs great crowds traveling with him--including us--on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples lifelong labors.Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
