    TRINITY CHURCH

    IN THE CITY OF BOSTON

  • Advent greetings! What a joy it is to welcome you to Candlelight Carols, a tradition at Trinity Church for more than 100 years. In this year of pandemic, we are delighted that we can still offer this service, even though our love for one another requires that we do it in through the miracles of electronic communication. We are delighted to share with you the story of Christmas in scripture and song. In this year shadowed by so many troubles, the joyful coming of the Christ Child reminds us that God’s indomitable light and hope still comes among us to push back all the darknesses of our world. The Creator of everything in heaven and earth has chosen to become one with us, bringing us the divine Love in this Holy Child to grace our world and illuminate our way. Hallelujah! You are welcome here not only at this season but throughout the year. We invite you to join us for worship, music, education, and community-service activities. If you are new to Trinity, or visiting our Episcopal Church for the f irst time, and you’d like to know more about the life and ministries of our community, please fill out the welcome form by clicking here. We look forward to getting to know you better. May you experience the love of God within yourself, and share God’s light in this season and always. The People of Trinity Church in the City of Boston

    Prelude

Sonata ‘Saint Mark’ Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751)

Welcome & Bidding PrayerBeloved in Christ,we gather tonight to prepare ourselvesto hear again the message of the angels and,in heart and mind, to go even unto Bethlehemand greet this joy which shall come to pass, the Babe lying in a manger.Let us read in scripture and voice in song tales of our God’s loving purposes, from the f irst days and unto the glorious Redemption brought us by the Holy Child. And, in what we do this day,may God, the Creator of all things, bless us with abundant grace;may Christ, the Word made f lesh, give us the joys of everlasting life;and to the fellowship of the saints in light, may the Holy Spirit guide us all.Amen.

Reading Luke 2:1-20In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Carol ‘Wexford Carol’arr. David Hamilton (b. 1955)

Good people all, this Christmas time,Consider well and bear in mindWhat our good God for us has doneIn sending his beloved sonWith Mary holy we should pray,To God with love this Christmas DayIn Bethlehem upon that morn,There was a blessed Messiah born. The night before that happy tide,The noble Virgin and her guideWere long time seeking up and downTo f ind a lodging in the town. But mark how all things came to passFrom every door repelled, alas,As was foretold, their refuge allWas but a humble ox’s stall. Near Bethlehem did shepherds keepTheir f locks of lambs and feeding sheepTo whom God’s angels did appearWhich put the shepherds in great fearPrepare and go, the angels saidTo Bethlehem, be not afraidFor there you’ll f ind, this happy mornA princely babe, sweet Jesus, born. With thankful heart and joyful mindThe shepherds went the babe to f indAnd as God’s angel had foretoldThey did our Saviour Christ beholdWithin a manger he was laidAnd by his side the virgin maidAttending on the Lord of LifeWho came on earth to end all strife.

The PrayersWith the Incarnation alighted on our lips and in our lives, let us pray for the needs of God’s whole world:For peace and goodwill over all the earth;Lord, hear our prayer. For unity and peace within the Church Christ came to build;Lord, hear our prayer. For the poor and the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed;Lord, hear our prayer. For the sick and the suffering, the lonely and the mourning, and those who care for them;Lord, hear our prayer. Finally, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us,but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made f lesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one;Lord, hear our prayer.

The Lord’s PrayerAnd let us now humbly offer to the throne of the infant King, the words which Christ himself has taught us:Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.Amen.

Anthem ‘What child is this?’arr. Paul Halley (b. 1952)

Ave MariaWhat Child is this, who, laid to rest,On Mary’s lap is sleeping?Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,While shepherds watch are keeping?RefrainThis, this is Christ, the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:Haste, haste to bring Him laud,The Babe, the Son of Mary! Why lies He in such mean estate,Where ox and ass are feeding?Good Christian, fear: for sinners hereThe silent Word is pleading. So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,Come, peasant, king to own Him.The King of kings salvation brings;Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

    Text: William Chatterton Dix (1837 – 1898)

Reading John 1:1-14aIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the f lesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became f lesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
