On behalf of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center we welcome you to our Cancer Survivors Day Conference and Celebration ~ Seeds of Hope!A diagnosis of cancer can leave life forever changed. Patients, as well as their families and friends are impacted in many significant ways. It is our hope through this Cancer Survivors Day Conference, and with our Comprehensive Cancer Care website (http://kpsantaclaracancercare.org) we can help you navigate through the steps of cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and provide you with ways to decrease your risk of cancer relapse and improve your quality of life.

We would appreciate your ideas, feedback, and suggestions in further improving the cancer care and services in our medical center.

Managing Emotions; Challenges after Treatment

Christy McCulloch, LCSWChristy McCulloch has been the full-time licensed clinical social worker in the Radiation Oncology Department at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara since 2007. http://kpsantaclaracancercare.org/support_services/supp_serv_staff/rad_onc.php

JoAnna L. Quan, MSWJoAnna Quan currently serves as Pediatric Oncology Social Worker in the Children’s Cancer Center at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara and as a Member of the National Academy of Bereavement for the past 3 years.

Perry Maliuanag, MDDr. Maliuanag joined Kaiser Permanente in 2005 as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist and is board certified for both Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine.http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/perrymaliuanag/

Care-giving and Self-care: Finding Balance

Susan Tilton, MSWSusan Tilton joined Kaiser Permanente in 1988 in the Social Sevices Department. She worked in Hospice for 3 years at Redwood City Kaiser Permanente and has worked in the Oncology Department at Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente since 2000.

Brian Missett, MDDr. Missett was born and raised in the Bay Area and is Assistant Chief of the Radiation Oncology Department at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/brianmissett/

A new focus for life

Esther Duran, PA-CEsther Duran is a Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery and is currently the Breast Care Coordinator. She joined the Surgery Department at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara in May of 2000. http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/estherduran/

Blaine McFarlandBlaine McFarland is a Survivor of Prostate Cancer. Post cancer treatment, he is an active volunteer with Kaiser Permanente’s Pet Therapy Program.

Deborah NewhouseDebbie Newhouse survived Breast Cancer and became a Radiation Therapist. She has served as a Radiation Therapist at the Kaiser Permanente Cancer Treatment Center since 2006.

Wilma GardnerWilma was diagnosed in late 2008 with Breast Cancer. She successfully completed treatment and in September of 2009 with her Bichon Frise, Daisy, joined the Pet Therapy volunteer program at Kaiser Permanente.

Mark J. DuLong, MD, Assistant Physician-in-Chief, Chief- Department of Plastic Surgery and Division of Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. DuLong is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, trained at the Stanford University Residency Program in Plastic Surgery. He serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University has been the Chief of the Kaiser Permanente Department of Plastic Surgery since 2002, and the Chief of Maxillofacial Surgery since the division was established here in 2005. In 2006 he assumed the role of Assistant Physician in Chief for the Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center.As APIC he oversees patient access to specialty care and has been instrumental in the founding of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Care Committee.http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/markdulong/

Sexuality, Intimacy and Relationships for Women

Bryna Barsky-Ex, PhDBryna Barsky-Ex, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and a sex therapist with 17 years of experience conducting therapy with couples, individuals and groups. She is employed by Kaiser Permanente San Jose as a Psychologist and Sex Therapist in the OB/GYN and Psychiatry departments, and is adjunct faculty for CSPP at Alliant, John F. Kennedy University, and the Wright Institute. Additionally, she has a private practice in Fremont where she specializes in work with couples and individuals with issues of intimacy, sexual dysfunction and sexual enhancement.

Susan C. Smarr, MD, Physician in Chief, Santa Clara Medical OfficesOriginally from Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Smarr earned her medical degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Smarr has held a variety of leadership positions in the Santa Clara Medical Center, including Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, as well as Chief of Quality for the Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Smarr serves as the Physician-in-Chief at Kaiser Permanente’s Santa Clara Medical Center. Anzonette Pittet, RD, ONSAnzonette Pittet is a Registered Dietitian with a specialization in Oncology Nutrition. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition in 1995 from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She worked as a Dietitian in England and Canada before relocating to San Jose, CA. She joined the Radiation Oncology Department at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara in 2006.

Jed Katzel, MDDr. Katzel was born in Florida and raised in California. He joined Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara’s Oncology Department in 2009. Dr. Katzel is board certified by the American board of Internal Medicine, Hematology, and board eligible in Medical Oncology.http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/jedkatzel/

Minggui Pan, MDDr. Pan is the Co-chair of Cancer Survivors Day Committee and the Chief of the Santa Clara Oncology Department. Samantha Seaward, MDDr. Seaward currently serves as the Chief of Radiation Oncology, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center, and Associate Regional Director, TPMG Radiation Oncology Services. She left private practice in 2002 to join Kaiser Permanente. Lucy Song, MDDr. Song is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology, and is fluent in Cantonese, Japanese and English.http://www.permanente.net/homepage/doctor/lucysong/

Workout Sessions

Kimberly Kamine, RN, Reiki MasterKimberly Kamine is a Registered Nurse at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Prior to her work at Stanford she was the Charge Nurse for Head and Neck Surgery at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. While at Kaiser and Stanford, she has received two service excellence awards. She became certified in Reiki in 1999 and later pursued a course in Aromatherapy. She was a Registered Aromatherapist from 2002-2007.

Jennifer Eng, Personal TrainerJennifer Eng has worked in New York City and California as a personal fitness trainer since 1993. She specializes in training clients who have medical considerations and incorporates functional training, calisthenics and plyometrics into her workouts depending on the client’s needs. She also coaches a Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team called Live Love Survive at the Foster City Aquatic Park.

Kathy Rule, CHTKathy Rule is a Certified Hypnotherapist, Certified Nutrition Consultant, Yoga instructor and Intuitive Healing Energy Practitioner. She is a member of Yoga Alliance, Healing Touch International, Inc., and the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists (AAPH). Kathy integrates a combination of Yoga, Hypnotherapy, nutrition, and energy healing.
