President’s Message

John B. Winne, President and CEO

Just three months ago, I wrote this column on St. Patrick’s Day and spoke about the beginning of the “State of Emergency” and I questioned how long it would last and when we would return to normal. I think that it is safe to say that the Pandemic and ensuing State of Emergency has been longer, deeper and far more damaging to our national economy than any of us could have imagined on March 17. As many of you are aware, BFCU needed to adapt to the Covid-19 world and we did so to the best of our ability. For two months, we adapted, we changed procedures and we figured things out on the fly. Yet, we never missed a beat in providing quality service to our members. I want to thank our employees who learned how to work remotely but especially our employees who came to Hallet St. each day to make sure that our members were properly served. They became true “financial first responders”. Since Memorial Day, we have re-opened our branches and have invited our members back, of course with proper social distancing. The long-term economic effects of the virus and ensuing state of emergency are still very much unknown. Many people and businesses have been deeply hurt and some may not recover. Our primary task of helping first responders and their families to achieve financial success will without doubt become more challenging. In the midst of the pandemic, our nation also was faced with the senseless murder of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis Police Officers. This has triggered protests across the country and while most have been peaceful demonstrations, a few, including one in our city turned violent. What happened on the street in Minnesota is wrong. Those responsible need to be brought to justice and they will be. Damaging property and stealing from merchants who were already suffering greatly due to the state of emergency and forced closing of their businesses is not the solution to the problem. I learned a great number of years ago that two wrongs do not make a right. Those that have marched and made their opinions known in certain but non-violent ways, have demonstrated once again how great our country can be. They have challenged the status quo, demanded change and make no mistake they have been heard. The pendulum of public opinion, however, has swung wildly toward a national anti-police movement including calls for de-funding and even eliminating police departments across the country. Our affiliation with the Boston Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police is still new but our team has had the opportunity to meet many fine men and women who wear these uniforms. The Boston Police Department, under the stellar leadership of Commissioner Gross has enjoyed much success with their community policing model and is being looked at as an example of how other communities can change their practices. Bostonians can be proud of the Commissioner, his leadership team and the men and women who wear the uniform of the BPD. We are also privileged to work with the men and women of Boston Fire Department and Boston EMS who have done tremendous work as true first responders against the pandemic. Congratulations to Fire Commissioner Dempsey who took the position at the outset of the crisis and has guided his department with precision. Summer is upon us and life has certainly changed. The effects of Covid-19 will, unfortunately, be with us for some time (probably until there is a vaccine or cure). The protests of the Black Lives Matter movement are hopefully the beginning of a society where the same rights and privilege belong to all Americans and where all men and women will be looked at and judged by their character and not by the color of their skin. Antiracism means recognizing the challenges caused by policies that hurt minority and under-served population groups and more importantly doing something to change those policies. We need to do our part, starting now.
