The Award Winning Station!From our first day of broadcasting, Canalside Radio have created an inclusive and open environment offering volunteer opportunities and free radio training to people of the Cheshire/Derbyshire region regardless of ability.

At a red carpet Positive Action North West 2011 awards ceremony, on Thursday, October 20th, Canalside Radio picked up the prestigious ‘Positive Action award’. Against stiff competition Canalside, who were nominated by Cheshire’s David Lewis Centre, scooped the’ ‘Positive Action Award’ in recognition of their inclusive and supportive practice in the workplace for people with disability.

Heidi Reid Presenter and Fundraiser at Canalside said:

“We’re very proud of the work that we do with disadvantaged people and are really chuffed to have picked up this award, but we do feel that inclusive employment is something that should be happening as standard, not just something that happens in special instances.”

The award is now proudly on show(polished daily by Station Manager Nick Wright!) at the Canalside Offices in Bollington.

Record Breakers!!!As part of our Children In Need fund raising events this year two young Canalside radio presenters have broken a UK record set by BBC Radio One DJ Chris Moyles and raised to date over £1,070 for Children In Need. Nathan Lawson and Will Davis, presenters at the internet streamed CY4Y Radio (Canalside Youth for Youth Radio), began their non-stop 60 hour live broadcast at 9am on Friday November 18th to coincide with the official Children In Need day, and concluded in a fanfare of party poppers and cheers from well wishers, at 9pm Sunday the 20th.

During the 60 hour broadcast the pair took pledges from listeners to dance for the studio webcam dressed in a lime green Mankini, to dress up as Madonna in a blonde wig and white Stetson, and mime along to her hit song ‘Material Girl’, and play song requests for listeners.

Local musicians Zap Zap Zap, Addy Oldman, Hot Vestry, Goodnight Astor, Calum Hogan and Jack Trainer joined Nathan and Will to play live studio sets and record jingles to support the 60 hour fundraising effort. The pair were supplied with food and drink throughout the record breaking attempt by the Co-op food stores in Bollington and Prestbury.

“We’ll be doing 60 hours and 1 minute next year!” said Nathan at the end if the Marathon!

Will and Nathan managed to raise £1070 for Children In Need. Donations can still be made online, just visit www.justgiving.com/60longhours.

Our New Years Resolution! Throughout 2012 we’re going to be covering more local events, playing more of your favourite music, running more competitions, launching more life style programs and creating more specialist music programs! 2011 Local Music Lowdown Review2011 has been an incredible year for the local music scene. Canalside Radio have always been pioneers in offering local musicians the opportunity to play on air. So earlier this year we decided to dedicate more air time to the local music scene and launched a brand new exclusive show, ‘Local Music Lowdown’.

Presented by Michael Chisholm and Matthew Issacs On Wednesday evenings at 6.00pm, Local Music Lowdown showcases the wealth of musical talent we have around the North West. In the first 6 months of broadcasting, over 50 local artists and bands have performed live from the Canalside studios(we’ve literally squeezed them in!!).

Some of the highlights included featuring Addy Oldman who has gone on to sign to Belle Jar Records and local singing sensation Hatty Keane and The Jar Family and also having the Jar Family perform live on air with ex-squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson.

The show is set to finish the year on a high with the release of the Children in Need Christmas Single, plus the Local Music Lowdown end of year party which will be held at The Swan With Two Necks open mic night from 8pm on Wednesday 21st December 2011.

2012 is going to be an even bigger year for the local music scene, stay tuned as the Local Music Lowdown is organising some very special events that will be announced very soon!

2011 - What A Year!!It’s been a pleasure to be a part of so many charity fundraisers and community events this year. 2011 has been a busy year to say the least! Some of the highlights include;

Canalside Radio’s Barnaby Festival Play Competition, Bollington Youth Fair Battle of the Bands, The launch of CY4Y Radio (Canalside Youth for Youth) in July, Gawsworth Rose Queen, Bollington Well Dressing Ceremony, Team Canalside cycled 60k in the first ever Cycletta North, Gawsworth Fun Run, East Cheshire Hospice Midnight Walk, Middlewood Way Open Day, Bollington Transport Extravaganza, numerous school summer fairs, Macclesfield Half Marathon, The Christmas lights switch on’s in Alderley Edge and Bollington and finally the Alderley Edge Christmas Fair - plus countless other events!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended events this year and a massive thank you to all the volunteers and event organisers all over Cheshire that have worked above and beyond the call of duty to organise these events.

Canalside Radio has made a massive pledge to support even more local events and charity fundraisers next year. If any listeners are involved with community projects or charity fundraisers, please get in touch! Canalside is YOUR community station and we love it when YOU are a part of it!
