MootingThe University of Exeter boasts an excellent, and growing, mooting programme, which provides undergraduate and postgraduate students with the opportunity to participate in a broad range of competitions. Exeter enjoys an international reputation for mooting and our students have been successful in competitions all over the world. Mooting is a vital part of every law student’s education. Whether you intend to practice as a solicitor or a barrister, the advocacy skills that a moot teaches are invaluable.

Mooters have a dedicated mini-library hosted at the Exeter Law School at their exclusive disposal. This contains books on mooting and public speaking, as well as specialised monographs on the topics relevant to the ongoing mooting competitions. We also have dedicated staff at the library devoted to helping our mooters with their research. You’ll receive coaching from staff and present your arguments before volunteer judges in a purpose-built moot court. Our Student Negotiation Society also sends teams to the National Negotiation Competition.

Exeter Law School Legal Assistance ProgrammeOur Legal Assistance Programme offers a range of pro bono opportunities to provide valuable career experience. These include working and networking as part of the Devon and Cornwall Police Joint Legal Services Department; the Exeter Law School Legal Aid Fundraising Team; Public Legal Education; Citizens Advice Bureau; Personal Support Unit; Students’ Guild Advice Unit; the Magdalen Chambers (the largest Chambers southwest of Bristol who arelooking for good students to provide research and practical support to their barristers); the Student Appeals Project, which investigates cases subject to appeal; and the Judicial Shadowing Programme, where you can ‘play judge’.

Canadian students who take an LLB programme at the University of Exeter can return to practice in Canada by applying for admission to a law society in a Canadian jurisdiction through taking exams through the National Committee for Accreditation (NCA). The NCA issue a Certificate of Qualification upon successful completion.

Students may have to take up to seven exams upon return to Canada (it varies depending on the programme studied and the professional experience gained), but these can usually be completed through a programme of self-study.

Exeter enjoys links with the NCA and offers a yearly seminar to students to help with module choice and applications to the NCA.For further information, please visit the NCA website: flsc.ca/national- committee-on-accreditation-nca

ACCREDITATION AND YOUR CAREER: SUPPORTING YOUR TRANSITION BACK TO CANADA

Canadian Law SocietyThe aims of the Canadian Law Society of Exeter University are fashioned around one simple objective: to help students who are planning on returning or moving to Canada upon graduation with regards to postgraduate education options, NCA Equivalency exam preparation, and what can generally be expected when making the transition from UK law to Canadian law. They also host a number of socials throughout the year where Canadians and non-Canadians of any discipline are welcome to join. Bracton Law Society

The Bracton Law Society is one of Exeter’s largest and most active societies. They provide an excellent social calendar year round, including various sporting, pro bono, mooting and debating opportunities, and the opportunity to write for the Society journal Obiter Dicta. They aim to inspire and support members looking to pursue a career in the legal profession by increasing awareness of career opportunities both nationally and regionally. They also have an 11-a-side football team, netball team, and mixed touch rugby team.

I have greatly enjoyed my time reading Law at the University of

Exeter. From the quality of the faculty, to the idyllic setting in the Devon countryside, Exeter has something to offer everyone and I would encourage prospective students to add the University to the top of their list of applications.

As a Canadian that is used to harsh winter weather, the

climate in Exeter could not be more temperate. While it does frequently rain, the distinct lack of snow is a definite benefit - just be sure to pack an umbrella. The city of Exeter is large enough to offer everything you will need during your time here, but retains a small-town feel. The city is very quaint. Most significantly for me was the ease of travel beyond the city. Exeter has excellent rail service to London, which makes travel back home easy.

On a final note - I want to speak about something that is

intangible, but was instrumental to my success as a student at the University. I have found the amount of support available to students here to be beyond anything I have experienced during my time at other universities. Quite simply, the faculty want to see you succeed here. The feeling is both refreshing and encouraging. As a student, this is one of the best reasons I can suggest to any student that is considering applying to the University of Exeter.

Studying in the UK, especially at Exeter,

opened the door to many career opportunities in London and internationally. I noticed that the University has an excellent reputation among the major international law firms based in the UK as well as with the local firms in Devon.

Since I left Exeter I have been studying for my

Canadian equivalency exams. ‘I will then begin my articling (training contract) as an in-house legal counsel at an international infrastructure company based out of Spain. I am hoping to eventually be called to the Ontario bar in Canada.
