RECRUIT STUDENTSwith real-world investment and risk management experience.

At the Beedie School of Business, our students get hands-on experience managing two of Canada’s largest student-run investment funds.

Students in the Master of Science in Finance program learn to develop analytical and technical skills in all areas of finance with a particular focus on investment and risk management. Members of the Student Investment Advisory Service (SIAS) manage over $18.2 million* of the university’s endowment portfolio. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, SIAS won first place in the Balanced Investment Style category at RISE, the world’s largest student investment conference.

In 2011, Simon Fraser University established the $5 million Beedie Endowment Asset Management (BEAM) fund. Managed entirely by a team of 20-25 undergraduate finance students at Western Canada’s largest business school, the fund is currently valued at $6.6 million*.

THURSDAY, APRIL 5

7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. Breakfast (Cove Terrace)

7:45 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. Opening Remarks and First Icebreaker (Marineland Rooms 1-2)

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. SESSION ONE – KEYNOTE (Marineland Rooms 1-2) War and Peace Challenges and Their Impact on the Global Economy The North Korea nuclear crisis; the Syrian, Yemeni, and Libyan civil wars in the Middle East; and Vladimir Putin’s aggression in Europe all pose a threat to peace and stability in 2018. What will be the impact on the global economy and business conditions worldwide? Harvard professor and former U.S. Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns will present his views on these critical events.Speaker: Nicholas Burns, professor, Harvard University, and former U.S. Under Secretary of State

9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. SESSION TWO (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Applying a Private Equity Approach to Generate Returns in Public EquitiesPrivate equity investors have generated positive returns for their clients over the past several decades. In addition, a quirk in the methodology of the measurement in risk and return provides another benefit of private equity: the return streams are not highly correlated with public equities. Many institutional investors responded by allocating capital away from public equities and into private equities—a shift that has accelerated since the global financial crisis. In this session, Tawhid Ali will address two issues. First, he’ll compare and contrast private versus public equity investing in a way to identify potential advantages in public equities that perhaps haven’t been fully appreciated. Second, he’ll share how taking some of the methods used in private equity and deploying them in public equity can lead to different portfolios—ones that can play a meaningful return-generating role.Speaker: Tawhid Ali, portfolio manager, global, international and European value equities, AllianceBernstein

9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. SESSION THREE (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Innovation: A Disruptive Force for Global Growth Growth opportunities are out there; they’re just harder to find. Identifying sources of potentially disruptive innovation can represent a compelling strategy for finding growth in a low-growth world. As a long-term investment analyst covering the technology sector, Brian Barbetta conducts research on themes and trends that continue to shape our daily lives and represent exciting investment opportunities. From artificial intelligence to self-driving cars, to virtual worlds, technology will change the way we think, learn, and live.Speaker: Brian Barbetta, managing director and global industry analyst, Wellington Management

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Networking Break (Foyer)

10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. SESSION FOUR (Marineland Rooms 1-2) China: A Deeper DiveDuring this session, Andy Rothman will present a framework for thinking about the Chinese economy, and the potential implications for investors. Last year was surprising in many ways, with a constructive relationship between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, and outperformance by many listed Chinese companies. Will the relationship between Trump and Xi continue to blossom, or will it be stunted by trade disputes? Will North Korea jump from distraction to conflict? How sustainable is the rebound in Chinese corporate earnings growth? Will the China bears finally be rewarded for worrying about debt and ghost cities? Will China remain the world’s best consumer story? Rothman will help contrast the headlines that may drive short-term sentiment toward China with the long-term fundamental drivers of China’s secular economic growth, highlighting risks and investment opportunities. Speaker:Andy Rothman, investment strategist, Matthews Asia

11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. SESSION FIVE (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Innovative Investing Opportunities in Insurance-linked Securities and Catastrophe BondsThe 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was exceptionally active in August and September as Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria battered Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, respectively. These catastrophic events caused widespread destruction, triggered major insurance claims, and acted as catalysts for insurance-linked securities (ILS). These insurance losses will cause premiums to rise and yields to increase as risk is repriced. Driven by investors attracted to high spreads and the opportunity to diversify their portfolios, the ILS market has taken off in recent years. In Canada, that opportunity has only recently begun, and many investors are seeking guidance for assessing the potential of this niche asset class.Speaker:Jonathan Malawer, managing director, K2 Advisors (This session is sponsored by Franklin Templeton Investments)

11:30 a.m. – Noon SESSION SIX (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Unintended Factor Bias in Global AllocationsAllocation to factors has been increasing in popularity year over year, but implementation in portfolio construction can still be a challenge for institutional investors. Bill DeRoche will discuss the unintended factor biases that could create risk or reduce diversification in a traditional global portfolio and how to avoid these unintended and undetected biases.Moderator:Caroline Cakebread, editor, Canadian Investment Review

Speaker:Bill DeRoche, chief investment officer and portfolio manager, AGFiQ Asset Management

Noon – 1:00 p.m. Lunch Reception (Cove Terrace)

1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. SESSION SEVEN (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Demystifying Private Credit Post-crisis regulation has had, and will continue to have, a disruptive effect on financial business models. Banks in particular have been heavily disrupted by higher capital requirements, higher loss provisions, and higher compliance costs—all of which are prompting them to exit from more non-core businesses. With these changes, the opportunity set has significantly grown for illiquid financing, leading to the increased popularity of “private credit” funds. While there’s an illusion of simplicity around private credit, the reality is more complex, with the sector encompassing a wide range of borrower/asset types as well as a complex spectrum of collateral and risk profiles. Christian Stracke will speak to opportunities in private strategies, cutting through the noise and discussing how the market has evolved and expanded, key considerations for asset managers in creating a private credit portfolio, and common misperceptions surrounding private credit. Speaker: Christian Stracke, managing director and global head of credit research, PIMCO

1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. SESSION EIGHT (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Defensive Risk Premia in a Time of ChangeThe investing backdrop for 2018 is challenging. Amid the longest bull market in history, investors need to consider all the potential disruptors, from new technologies to government policy in Canada and, indeed, globally, to any number of unforeseen events. Investors can’t simply reduce their market exposures, but they’re looking for tools to protect themselves in the event that volatility picks up, leading to temporary market drawdowns. Against this economic and market backdrop, Chris Adair and Heather Wolfe will provide context into how Canadian DB pension plans can hedge (or “off set”) potential market disruption or dislocation that change could bring.Moderator:Caroline Cakebread, editor, Canadian Investment Review

Speakers:Chris Adair, senior managing director, head of sales, client service and strategy, Ryan Labs Asset Management, a Sun Life Investment Management CompanyHeather Wolfe, senior managing director, head of business development and client relationships, Sun Life Institutional Investments (Canada) Inc.

2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. SESSION NINE (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Global Equities: Disruption, Innovation, and the Right Side of ChangeTechnological innovation, changing consumer tastes, and the evolution of new business models are upsetting the competitive balance in a growing number of global industries. With this wave of disruption expected only to accelerate, Jennifer O’Hara Martin will explore the current global market outlook and identify investment opportunities and business models that stand to benefit— and those most at risk.Speaker:Jennifer O’Hara Martin, portfolio specialist in the U.S. equity division, T. Rowe Price

2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Networking Break (Foyer)

3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. SESSION TEN (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Private Market Solutions for Public Market QuestionsChanges in regulations are accelerating the growth of private markets. As monetary and other policy initiatives make it more difficult for investors to meet their targets, private market strategies are becoming an increasing part of the solution.Speaker:Alan Cauberghs, head of private assets, Schroders

3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. SESSION ELEVEN (Marineland Rooms 1-2) Transformational HealthOver the next 10 years, healthcare systems around the world will experience a monumental change. The change is necessary for addressing the increasing demand for healthcare services as populations age, at the same time as public finances find themselves under continuous pressure. The good news is, there’s a wide range of technologies showing promise in addressing many of the challenges facing healthcare systems. Better health at a lower cost could become a reality. For example, the decreasing cost of genome sequencing, increasing computing power, deep learning algorithms, and gene therapy will help us to resolve the many mysteries of human biology and also provide us with tools that can target diseases with much greater precision. Companies that succeed in delivering substantial improvements to human health will also be able to deliver attractive investment returns.Speaker: Julia Angeles, investment manager, Baillie Gifford

But as demand outstrips supply in the current Canadian property investment universe, investors may be pushed into global real estate as well as pulled by its benefits and positive attributes. In this interactive fireside chat, you’ll discover the global trends that will drive real estate returns in key regions across the globe, how major advances in technology are affecting the global landscape, and the various implementation factors and considerations for institutional investors looking to invest beyond their domestic borders.Moderator:Caroline Cakebread, editor, Canadian Investment Review

9:15 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. SESSION THIRTEEN (Marineland Rooms 1-2) The Next Chapter of Asia’s Growth Story Despite Asian equities remaining relatively attractive in terms of valuations, recent flows into this asset class have been modest, with a focus on risk in the region, especially associated risks with China. However, with maturity in the markets growing and reforms providing investors with confidence, there’s once again renewed interest in the region. What do China’s “One Belt, One Road” and “Made in China 2025” strategies mean for the region, not to mention the rest of the world? What do these strategies and the evolution of innovative Asian companies mean for global trade? Catherine Yeung will explore the trends and drivers for the next chapter in Asia’s growth story, including infrastructure developments and the rise of the consumer and the transformation of Asian companies into global leaders. Speaker:Catherine Yeung, investment director, Fidelity International

But while global investing is taking root in the equity portfolio of many plans, it has been tougher to shake off the home-country bias across other areas of a pension portfolio. How have Canadian pension plans approached global investing, and what barriers have they encountered to moving further into global assets? What opportunities do they see in the global universe, and what best practices can they share with other plan sponsors?Moderator:Caroline Cakebread, editor, Canadian Investment Review

NICHOLAS BURNSNicholas Burns is a former U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, a former U.S. Ambassador to Greece and NATO and a former White House Special Assistant. He is currently a Harvard Professor and is seen as one of the most distinguished career diplomats of our time, who served under Democratic and Republican Presidents and offers a bipartisan view of foreign and security affairs and global trends in the 21st century. A preeminent leader, lecturer and writer whose bi-partisan successes have made him one of the most significant voices on globalization, foreign and defense policy, and global strategy today, Nicholas Burns shares powerful insights on America’s future role in international leadership. For nearly three decades, Burns was at the forefront of shaping and articulating the U.S.’s position on the world stage during times of unprecedented crisis and change—from the collapse of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War to China, India and Brazil’s rise to power. Serving as the State Department’s third highest ranking official (2005–2008), Burns led negotiations on the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, negotiated a long-term military assistance agreement with Israel and was the lead U.S. negotiator with China, Russia and Europe on Iran’s nuclear program. Appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Burns led key efforts to secure international support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and while U.S. Ambassador to Greece, played a major role in trade, investment and closer counter-terrorism ties with that country. Burns is currently the Goodman Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and is Director of the school’s Future of Diplomacy Project. He is also Director of the Aspen Strategy Group, Senior Counselor at the Cohen Group, and serves on the Board of Directors of Entegris, Inc. Providing audiences with a candid look at American diplomacy in action and what lies ahead for U.S. foreign policy, Burns is a widely sought-after media commentator appearing frequently on PBS, FOX, MSNBC, BBC and CNN, and writes frequently for major international publications on foreign affairs.

BAILLIE GIFFORD INTERNATIONAL LLCBaillie Gifford manages C$15.5* billion for Canadian clients. The firm has been in business for over 100 years and is one of the leading privately-owned investment management firms in the UK.

We have been managing money for Canadian clients for over 20 years and provide a variety of international, emerging markets and global equity portfolios for public and corporate pension plans in Canada, as well as a variety of non-pension sponsors.

The success of the firm has been largely built on the simple foundations of good performance, good service and low staff turnover. Independent ownership allows us to focus on the key areas of investment performance and proactive client service. Our partnership structure fosters stability and loyalty in our people and as investment management is our only business we have no conflicts of interest, which gives an extra clear focus to our clients’ needs.

Our structure combines the best of experience and international comparison. We believe that our analysis of individual business has added the most value for our clients. Not only has it helped us to produce steady returns from stock selection – we feel this to be a more reliable source of return because it is based on hundreds of separate decisions – but it has also alerted us to forthcoming wider macroeconomic challenges.

Over 109 professional investors travel the world in search of new stock ideas but have the added advantage of a common home base in Edinburgh where they can compare opportunities face to face with colleagues and deepen their analysis to mutual benefit. It is a well-tried and tested system which we believe will stand us in good stead as we embark on our second century of investment management for leading institutional clients.
