International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme
IB offers 3 self contained but coherent programmes. Each program challenges and encourages the student to embrace and understand connections between subjects and the interconnection to the real world. All programmes have the foundation of the values known as the IB Learner Profile.
MYP is the Middle Years Programme and it is part of the International
Baccalaureate (IB). MYP is a 5 year program from Grade 6 to 10. It
stresses academic challenges and life skills.
The middle school years are often called the roller coaster years due to
challenges like puberty, learning to take control of learning, making moral
and ethical decisions and a sense of individuality. Middle school is a
critical phase of personal and intellectual development and the MYP helps
students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and
increasingly interrelated world.

Approaches to Learning (ATL)
IB Learner Profile
At the heart of the IB is the “learner profile”, a long-term, holistic vision
of education that underpins all 3 programmes and puts the student at the
center of everything we do. The learner profile is the IB mission statement
translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The ten
aspirational qualities of the learner profile inspire and motivate the work of
teachers, students and schools, providing a statement of the aims and
values of the IB and a definition of what we mean by “international-
mindedness”.
The learner profile unites us all with a common focus: on the whole
person, as a lifelong learner. It applies to us all - student, teacher, parent or
administrator - for we are all continually learning.
At CISH we work at developing the learner profile in and out of the
classroom. It’s something that we value deeply at the school and
recognize on a regular basis.
In PYP, students are introduced to
Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills but
they are developed and mastered in MYP
and DP. ATL skills are “tools for
learning” and are applicable to all
subjects. All MYP units of work offer
opportunities for students to develop and
practice ATL skills. ATL skills provide
valuable support for students working to
meet the subject aims and objectives.

The MYP provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for middle school students. MYP is a framework not a curriculum. The curriculum used is Canadian from the province of New Brunswick.

1-to-1 Laptop Program
Timetable of an MYP student:
The Middle School timetable is designed to meet the needs of the MYP students.
• The schedule rotates on a 5-day cycle.
• Each day there are 6 periods
• Each period is 55 minutes
MYP Class:
For each MYP student, one period per week is dedicated to the MYP. This is a class that is team taught by our MYP trained teachers. This class focuses on helping students succeed in the MYP by reinforcing MYP elements such as:

A link to the New Brunswick Curriculum Documents can be found on our school’s website. By following these Curriculum Documents we are able to provide not just an IB Education but a Canadian one and therefore be able to offer Canadian High School Diplomas to our students in grade 12.

Every MYP student must have a laptop that meets minimum specifications.

The Purpose of Assessment
Assessment needs to support and encourage student learning by providing feedback on the learning process. Assessment should inform, enhance and improve the teaching process. It should also promote a deep understanding of subject content by supporting students in their inquires set in the real world using Global Contexts.
This is done by using Criteria-Related Assessments. Each subject assesses their content using criteria. Assessing using criteria gives the student and teacher a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the student and where to focus on for future lessons.
Each subject has 4 criteria. Criterion differ based on the subject but all criteria is weighted out of 8.
Throughout the year, students have assignments that use rubrics to assess the criterion. There are no percentages given in MYP. The rubrics have a scale from 0 to 8. The student is assigned a grade based on meeting the descriptors in the rubrics.

MYP Assessments
Best Fit
For each criterion within each subject group the student earns a level of achievement.
The level of achievement a student earns at the end of each semester is based on a Best Fit Approach.
To determine the Best Fit a teacher reviews all the work a student has completed throughout the year for a given criteria and determine the level of achievement that most accurately represents the student’s ability.
Once the Best Fit is determined for each criteria, they are added up. The sum for all the criteria is 32. Teachers use the conversion chart below to determine the final grade for the student.
The final subject grade
A Final Grade can only be determined at the end of the year. This will be given in the June Report Card. However, the January Progress Report will provide a predicted grade for students to give them an idea of where they’re at.

MYP is not just about academics. It also works to develop the whole child and the characteristics of the IB Learner. This is accomplished in a variety of ways through the Community and Service program. Below are some opportunities that students entering Grade 6 can take advantage of to complete their Community and Service component of MYP.

At the end of each IB program, there is a culminating project. In the MYP, this project is an independent piece of work. The purpose is for students to study a topic that they are personally interested in but never had the chance to study. It also allows them to demonstrate how they have developed as a learner.
