The endurance of a Ballet is based as much

on the strength of the story that inspired

it as on the production itself. With the

Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Dracula, both are

delivered! Choreographer Mark Godden,

whose stunning choreographies have

graced our stages numerous times,

has delved into the ominous fantasy of

Bram Stoker’s novel to create a searing

dance drama for the ages. Created in

1998, this production has superbly aligned

the haunting music of Gustav Mahler’s

symphonies with passionate dancing, and

stunning sets and costumes. One of a few

made-in-Canada full-length story ballets —

a signature the RWB can be proud of —

this Dracula is a smart, highly theatrical

and witty rendition of one of the world’s

most beloved gothic horror stories. Enjoy!

tant par la force de l’histoire qui l’a inspiré

que par celle de la production elle-même.

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, qualities

that have garnered both critical and

audience acclaim. These qualities keep

the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in demand as

it presents more than 100 performances

every season.

Founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and

Betty Farrally, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

holds the double distinction of being

Canada’s premier ballet company and

the longest continuously operating ballet

company in North America. In 1953, the

Company received its royal title, the first

granted under the reign of Her Majesty

Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1958, Arnold Spohr was appointed Artistic

Director. Under his direction the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet grew and flourished to take

its place among the world’s internationally

renowned companies. To further the

Company’s development, a professional

school was created in 1970 under the

direction of David Moroni. Today two-thirds

of the Company’s dancers are graduates of

the school. On March 7, 1996, André Lewis

was named Artistic Director and has been

with the RWB ever since.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet began to tour

Canada in 1945 and completed its first

American tour in 1954. Today, the Company

spends 15 or more weeks a year on the

road, performing in centres large and small.

carries approximately 55,000 pounds of

equipment. For full-length ballets, the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet travels with two semi-trailers

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has performed

in the United States, South America, Europe,

the Middle East, Russia, Japan, Asia, Mexico

and in every province of Canada.

Throughout its history, the Royal Winnipeg

Ballet has been a dance leader, recording

innumerable firsts. It developed the concept

of the regional ballet festival in the 1940s and

was the first western company to perform

in Cuba after the revolution. It received Gold

Medals at the International Ballet Festival in

Paris in 1968 and that same year became the

first Canadian company to tour Russia and

Czechoslovakia.

This year the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

celebrates its 78th season with the return

of some of its most treasured repertoires

including Twyla Tharp’s The Princess and

The Goblin, The Sleeping Beauty, and

Carmina Burana.

SynopsisACT IScene I – Lucy Westenra’s Seaside Estate in England (late 1800s)

Having already been inducted into

Dracula’s world, Lucy collapses in her

bedroom. Her nightmares and sleepwalking

have the household staff concerned.

Troubled by her erratic moods, Lucy’s

three suitors and a medical specialist,

Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, are summoned

to her bedside. Close to hysterical and

seemingly paranoid, Lucy faints, almost

to death. Van Helsing determines Lucy

to have unexplainable loss of blood.

A transfusion is required. Suspicious

that supernatural forces are at work,

Van Helsing discovers two tiny holes in

Lucy’s neck. Research material from the

mansion library is brought to the doctor.

Van Helsing abandons medical remedies

and surrounds Lucy’s bedroom with garlic

and crosses. Lucy appears dead to the

doctor and her three suitors.

Scene II – Lucy’s Crypt

Holding her under his dark spell, Dracula

claims his prize by initiating Lucy into

the tomb. Van Helsing and the suitors,

suspicious of Lucy’s death, break into the

tomb. Armed with crosses and stakes,

they manage to free Lucy from Dracula’s

evil empire.

Dracula savoure sa victoire en la conduisant

et de pieux, ils parviennent à soustraire

humourously illustrate a condensed

narration of Bram Stoker’s famous novel,

Dracula.

Scene I – Red Dance

This bacchanal is inspired by the traditions

of classical dance along with elements

of folklore and folk dance. The wolf and

dancers reflect different aspects of

Dracula and his world.

Scene II – A Convent in Budapest (late 1800s)

Mina Murray (a friend of Lucy Westenra,

who is unaware of the fate which has

befallen her), travels to a convent in

Budapest after being summoned to the

side of her ill fiancé, Jonathan Harker. In

order to advance his career, Jonathan has

recently travelled to Transylvania to assist

Count Dracula in buying real estate in

England. Mina and Jonathan are together

after a long absence when she chances

upon his diary. Mina reads that Dracula had

abandoned Jonathan in the castle, where he

encountered three vampire women. Though

lured by their strange seduction, Jonathan

has managed to escape. Mina is enticed by

Jonathan’s experiences in the castle and

part of her feels drawn to that world. Having

no secrets from Jonathan, she divulges

this desire. Jonathan is shocked by Mina’s

behaviour, which is similar to that of the

Mina assures Jonathan of her love by

sealing the diary’s secrets.

Scene III – The Crypt at Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania (late 1800s)

Mina has been taken captive by Dracula,

who offers her a place to live in the world

of the living dead, the place she read about

in Jonathan’s diary. Dracula leaves Mina

drained of blood as he hears Van Helsing

and Lucy’s suitors inside the castle.

Finding Mina alive, they hunt for Dracula.

The daylight is fast approaching and

Dracula is forced to battle the men. With all

enslaved, the Count tortures Jonathan

by performing his blood ritual on Mina.

Biographies

André LewisArtistic Director / Directeur artistique

André Lewis has spent the majority of his

career with Canada’s first professional

dance company, accepting the position of

Artistic Director in 1996. Since then, Lewis

has been the driving force behind the new

and innovative works that have dramatically

rejuvenated the Company’s repertoire.

Lewis has commissioned numerous

blockbuster ballets such as Mark Godden’s

Dracula in 1998, Jorden Morris’ critically

acclaimed Peter Pan in 2006 and Jorden

Morris’ Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet in 2009.

He was instrumental in the 1999 creation

of a new Nutcracker for the Company and

in 2012, Lewis and Atlanta Ballet Artistic

Director John McFall co-commissioned a

new creation by celebrated choreographer

Twyla Tharp’s The Princess and the Goblin.

In 2013, Lewis commissioned another

outstanding new creation in conjunction

with New York choreographer Lila York.

The full-length ballet The Handmaid’s Tale

was a bold adaptation of the novel of the

same name by Governor General Award-

winning Canadian author, Margaret Atwood.

In 2014, for the RWB’s 75th anniversary

season, Lewis commissioned choreo-

grapher Mark Godden to create the

groundbreaking work Going Home Star –

Truth and Reconciliation representing

the many stories, both told and untold,

of Indian Residential School Survivors

and their families. This commissioned

André Lewis a passé la majorité de sa carrière

au Royal Winnipeg Ballet du Canada, dont il

Governor General’s Meritorious Award and

the Jubilee Medal, as well as being featured

Many of Godden’s ballets have won

awards: his Myth and La Princesse et le

Soldat, won Top Honors in the international

ballet competitions of Varna, Bulgaria and

Helsinki, Finland. He is a recipient of the

notable Choo-San Goh Award and Godden’s

full-length ballet Dracula was nominated

for a Dora Mavor Moore Award. Dracula

was adapted for film in 2001 (directed by

Guy Maddin) and won an Emmy Award for

best Performing Arts Film and was awarded

Best Choreography at The Monaco Film

Festival. Godden’s full-length ballet, The Magic

Flute, was produced into film (directed by

Barbara Willis Sweete) and won a Gemini for

Best Ensemble Performance.

In 2006, Godden had the great honour

of representing Canada by directing and

choreographing the Canadian portion of

the Olympic Games Closing Ceremonies

in Torino, Italy. He created new ballets for

the National Ballet of Mexico (Tronfo di

Afrodite), Ballet Memphis (A Midsummer

Night’s Dream), Ballet Nouveau Colorado,

Northwest Professional Dance Project and

Milwaukee Ballet (Wonder Wild). Godden’s

ballets are in the active repertoire of Northern

Ballet Theatre (UK), North Carolina Dance

Theater (Constructing Juliet), Atlanta Ballet

(The Magic Flute), Houston Salad Festival

(Miroirs), and Ballet Memphis (A Midsummer

Night’s Dream). Godden is a Visiting Artist for

the National Foundation for Advancement in

the Arts “YoungArts” in Miami, Florida.

Earl StaffordConductor / Chef d’orchestre

A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Earl Stafford

began his piano training at the age of eight.

He made his debut two years later with the

Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Earl

continued his studies at the University of

Toronto, Faculty of Music, in New York with

Milton Kaye, and at the Paris Conservatoire

with Aldo Ciccolini and Franco Ferrara.

Earl was appointed Music Director and

Principal Conductor for the RWB in 1984 –

a position he held until his resignation in

2008. In addition to his work with the RWB

he has been a guest conductor with the

National Ballet of Canada and Les Grands

Ballets Canadiens. Apart from his RWB

commitments, he was Music Director of the

Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and has

been a member of the faculties of both the

Banff Centre for the Arts and the University

of Manitoba. To name a few of many

orchestras, Earl has conducted the Tokyo

City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hungarian

State Opera Orchestra and the Scottish

Chamber Orchestra to critical acclaim.

In acknowledgment of his various

achievements, Earl was recently named

to the Order of Canada.

Earl is grateful for the opportunity to

conduct the National Arts Centre Orchestra

once again, this time in collaboration with

the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Paul Daigle has a first-hand understanding

of the intricacies of designing for dance.

A graduate of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

School, Mr. Daigle went on to perform for

two seasons with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

before leaving in 1988 to pursue a career

in design.

Paul Daigle has established a very

creative and productive relationship with

choreographer Mark Godden. Together they

have collaborated on a variety of creations

for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, including

sets and costumes for Sequoia, Godden’s

1989 Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award-

winning ballet, Godden’s two award-winning

pas de deux, Myth and La Princesse et

le Soldat, as well as Forms of Distinction,

Rapsodie espagnole, and seven one-act

Godden ballets: Symphony No. 1, Angels in

the Architecture, Dame aux Fruits, La Folía,

A Darkness Between Us, Shepherd’s Wake

and Miroirs.

During the 1997-1998 RWB season, he

redesigned the sets for Antony Tudor’s

The Leaves Are Fading and the costumes

for Paquita. He also collaborated with

Mark Godden on two new works, The Rite

of Spring and Anywhere But London.

During the 1998-1999 season, Mr. Daigle

designed the scenery and costumes for

Mark Godden’s first full-length ballet,

Dracula. In 2003, he went on to win

the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry

Association Blizzard Award for best

costume design for Guy Maddin’s film

adaptation of Godden’s Dracula.

The work of the late David Morrison has

been described as “dramatic”, “daring” and

“perfect” by The Globe and Mail. Morrison lit

over 200 world premieres across Canada,

the U.S., Europe and Asia. Previous work

with the RWB included Nina Menon’s

Drunken Butterflies, Cherry Pink and Apple

Blossom White, and Mark Godden’s The Rite

of Spring and Dracula.

Morrison specialized in dance lighting

since 1983. He apprenticed with renowned

lighting designer Nicholas Cernovitch.

Morrison worked with many leading

choreographers including John Alleyne,

Peggy Baker, Serge Bennathan, Bill James,

James Kudelka, John Neumeier and Rudi

van Dantzig. His work has been seen in the

repertoire of Dancemakers, Alberta Ballet,

Ballet British Columbia, Boston Ballet,

Ballet Florida, The Royal Ballet of Flanders

and Compañía Nacional de Danza of Mexico.

Morrison was Resident Lighting Designer

for The National Ballet School and was a

regular guest artist at Ryerson University.

He designed Crystal Pite’s Pilot X for

Nederlands Dans Theater.
