Review- Terms of Capitulation

• French laws, customs, and institutions were not banned– “Canadiens” allowed to retain possession of land– Allowed to continue practicing religion• Catholic church only French institution still intact

– Responsible for French- Canadian society/ culture persisting

• France ceded control of:– Canada (St. Lawrence Heartland)– Rest of Acadia (including Cape Breton and PEI)– Any claim to the OHIO Valley– French Louisiana

Pontiac Rebellion

• Problem for the British? – Now they had a vast territory which they were not sure

they really wanted. • Now the British had a vast continent but had to

contend with France’s former allies• As British took over French posts in the region,

resentment among Native grew– Seneca of Iroquois Confederacy– Pontiac urged rejection of brandy trade and ways of

“whites”

Pontiac Rebellion

• Frontier exploded in violence– 2000 settlers massacred, 400 soldiers killed– Every fort west of Niagara taken (except Detroit)– Rebellion lasted two years– Peace talks between Pontiac and British BUT

Native Alliances fell apart. – Pontiac later assassinated by rival Nation.
