Most of South America is in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Amazon River and the Andes Mountains are two of the notable physical features found on this continent.

This means SA’s seasons are

opposite of our due to the tilt

of the Earth’s axis!

The Amazon River starts in the Andes Mountains in Peru and flows east across South America through Brazil to the Atlantic Ocean. The world's largest tropical rain forest is located in the Amazon River Basin.

The Amazon River competes with the Nile River to be the world’s longest river in the world. As far as volume of water, the Amazon

wins without a doubt!

# The Andes Mountains are the longest mountain range in South America. Located in the western part of the continent, the mountains extend through the countries of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.

You should know that two of the most important

crops of the world, potato and tomato, originated both in

the Andes Mountains!

# The Atacama Desert is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains in northern Chile.

# It is the driest part of South America.

Rio de la Plata # The Río de la Plata is located between Argentina and Uruguay.

# It is an estuary formed by the Uruguay and Paraná rivers.

# Patagonia is a region in southern Chile and southern Argentina between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

# It is made up of dry plains and plateaus.

#  Argentina’s Perito Moreno Glacier, which contains the world's third largest reserve of fresh water, is one of just two glaciers in all of South America that is growing.

#  This phenomena baffles scientists, as most of the world’s glaciers are shrinking because of climate change.

#  The Magellanic penguin was named after Ferdinand Magellan, who documented seeing the species in 1519 on his first voyage around the tip of South America.

#  Though millions of individual Magellanic penguins live off the coasts of Argentina and Chile, this penguin species is considered “threatened” because of how massively vulnerable it is to oil spills.

#  Around 20,000 adults and 22,000 juveniles die every year off Argentina as a result of them.

Watch this video of crossing the Panama Canal

# The Panama Canal is located on the Isthmus of Panama, and it links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Sierra Madre Mountains

# The Sierra Madre Mountains are made up of three mountain ranges in Mexico.

# The ranges are the Sierra Madre Oriental in the eastern part of Mexico, the Sierra Madre Occidental in the western part of Mexico, and the Sierra Madre del Sur in the southern part of Mexico.

Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean Sea # Part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico is bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba.

# Located to the north of South America and to the east of Central America, the Caribbean Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean and contains the islands of the West Indies.
