I was first introduced to a group of multi-cultured students; we had lunch and shared analytical discussion of rap artists Kanye West and Nicki Minaj. It was intellectual and fun, but the thing I enjoyed the most was when I was introduced to the women’s basketball team. That evening we had dinner and enjoyed social events at Grinnell’s Harris Center, and within a half’s day time, I felt less like a prospective student and more like a member of the team. We encourage a class visit during your time on campus for a number of reasons. The first and most important is that academics at Grinnell are our top priority. We want our recruits to understand how classes at Grinnell are conducted; you’ll begin to see that our students are very motivated, our professors engaged, and that classes are often a time of intense discussion and exchange of ideas.

Our professors play a very important role in our students’ lives. Not only are they instrumental in the classroom, but they also engage our students in out-of-classroom learning. There are a number of opportunities to do research or an independent study with our professors. Many of our faculty live in Grinnell and are available to our students for extra help, office hours, and many come to our home games to cheer on their students. We work hard with our professors to limit missed class time during the season and are in constant communication about our student-athletes’ academic performance.

We take pride in our team’s academic success. This past year we maintained a 3.4 GPA and were honored as one of the top 25 academic programs in the nation.

Why is a class visit important while visiting Grinnell?

The most important part of your visit to Grinnell is the opportunity to spend unstructured time with the team. This opportunity allows you to see how they interact with each other, other students, and how they manage their time and handle their academic and athletic responsibilities. It also allows you to get to know their personalities, their goofiness, and their core values!

Our team culture is of the utmost importance to us. We want to recruit student-athletes who have a team-first mentality and who are looking to belong to a tight-knit group of scholar-athletes. We have women from diverse backgrounds on our team, but their desire to be great basketball players bonds them together. This shared goal is what propels us forward as a program.

What’s the most important aspect of the visit?

Questions we’d love for you to ask during your visi t !

1

ü We’ll have a chance to sit down with you and your parent/s during your visit to Grinnell. We LOVE it when students ask questions- here are some that you might want to consider!

ü How do you promote a balance between academics and athletics? What academic resources do I have on campus if I need additional help?

ü How does Grinnell prepare me for life after college? What have your alumni done?

ü What are your goals and coaching philosophy?

ü What does the yearly training plan look like? Can I play multiple sports at Grinnell?

ü Where am I within your recruiting pool? What impact do you see me having on your program next year? Over my four years?
