LIVING IN CHENGDUMany Exchange students choose to study at SWUFE because it offers a great combination of course options and location.

Chengdu is the capital city of Sichuan Province and also the

largest metropolitan economy in mid-west China and the 4th

largest city in China. History of Chengdu can be traced back

to the early 4th century BC. The name of Chengdu implicates

the meaning of ‘Become (Cheng) a capital (Du)’*.

* There is a short video called ‘9 minutes to know about Chengdu’ on Youtube.

Overview

Being the center of emerging inland China with an annual

growth rate of 15%, Chengdu was selected to hold the

‘Fortune Global Forum’ in 2013 and was also ranked the

fastest developing city in the world by Forbes in 2010;

however, it boasts agreeable environment and relaxed

lifestyle.

Chengdu also earned the titles of ‘the Land of Abundance’,

‘the Country of Heaven’, and ‘the Garden City’. The

pillar industries in Chengdu include agriculture, medicine,

machinery, tourism, finance and high-tech. Until now, there

have been more than 200 Fortune Global 500 Enterprises

investing and establishing operational hubs in Chengdu.

Economy

Chengdu has typical sub-tropical humid climate, with an

annual temperature of around 16.4°C(61.52°F). The winter

in Chengdu is short and mild, with an average temperature

of above 5°C(41°F). In summer, the highest temperature is

usually less than 35°C (95°F). There is not much precipitation

in winter and spring while it is affluent in summer and

autumn. The wind speed is quite low.

Nearly all styles of food from different countries can be found

in Chengdu – ‘a Heaven for Gourmets’; however, three

things are a must-try: Sichuan hotpot, Sichuan Cuisine and

Chengdu-style snacks.

Being the most popular Chinese food, Sichuan cuisine is

famous for its spicy flavor and elaborate cooking techniques.

Famous Sichuan dishes include: Mapo Tofu, Kung Pao

Chicken, twice-cooked pork, water-boiled fish etc. In 2010,

Chengdu was named ‘the City of Gastronomy’ by UNESCO,

making it the first city in Asia to be awarded such an

accolade.

Food

Chunxi Road is the most famous and convenient place

to catch up with fast-fashion. With a history of 70 years,

Chunxi Road boasts the most typical and prosperous

commercial pedestrian street in Chengdu. It is said that

‘Going to Chengdu without visiting Chunxi Road is like going

to Paris without visiting Champs Elysees, New York without

5th Avenue, or more locally, Beijng without Wangfujing,

or Shanghai without visiting Nanjing Road.’ Other famous

shopping districts include ZongFuLu, HongZhaoBi etc.

Chengdu is described as "China's party city" by an article

in Los Angeles Times. Chengdu outnumbers Shanghai in

its number of tea houses and bars despite having less than

half of its population. Local residents have a reputation for

having a laid back life style and for knowing how to enjoy life.

Famous recreational places include Lan Kwai Fong(coffee,

bars and clubs), Jiuyan Qiao(clubs and resturants),

Hongmen Jie(outdoor food stall and resturants) etc.

Recreation

Taxis can be caught directly on street. Drivers do not speak

English, so make sure that you have your destination written

in Chinese Characters. Mostly, a cell phone picture of an

address can help a lot. The taxi price is a base price of 8

RMB, which cover the first 2 kilometers’ distance, and plus

an increase at 1.9 RMB/kilometer. Public bus and Metro are

the main public transportation vehicles. Ticket fare varies

from 1 to 3.5 RMB.
