Over £450 million has been invested into the campus in the last ten years with a further £135 million planned over the next three years.

A new campus masterplan is being created with the University’s architects, underpinning the University’s commitment to provide world-class teaching and research facilities.

Campus Investment

New Engineering Building

A state-of-the-art facility for the Engineering Department is currently underway to replace existing facilities and provide additional areas for future growth and new specialisms such as Nuclear, Energy and Chemical Engineering.

The new building will open at the end of 2014 and provide a world-class environment with specially-designed workshops, teaching laboratories and office areas.

The aim is to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating for this building, to reflect current regulations and industry benchmarks and to raise the bar in terms of building efficiency in line with National Sustainability and Carbon Reduction targets set for 2020 and 2050.

Lancaster has several major projects taking place on campus.

Faraday Building Refurbishment for Chemistry at Lancaster

Investment is underway to redevelop and equip the Faraday Building to create world class facilities for Chemistry at Lancaster, providing custom designed undergraduate laboratories to support teaching in synthetic, analytical and spectroscopy, and computational chemistries.

The project will also provide dedicated synthetic and non-synthetic (analytical and spectroscopy) research laboratories, computer-based research laboratories to support chemical theory, a computation section and further space to house the growing collection of research-grade instruments.

The new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) suite was the first of the custom-designed research support spaces to open.

Equipment already in place includes two NMR spectrometers, a microscope, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography instrumentation and Ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectrometers.

A mass spectrometry suite is under construction, as well as an extension to the NMR suite, and space to cater for single crystal X-ray diffraction equipment.

A new three storey extension is also being built to create additional research and development laboratories.

Sports Facilities - New 3G Artificial Pitch

The installation of a new third generation artificial pitch, to complement the two existing AstroTurf pitches, was completed in June 2014.

The pitch is certified to Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and International Rugby Board standards, allowing competitive matches to be played.

WiFi and Information & Communications Technology (ICT) connectivity has also been installed to enable live streaming of games.

Library Refurbishment

The original East Building of the Library opened on 3rd January 1967. A later extension, the West Building, was added in 1997 containing an Archive, Reading Room and IT Training Suites.

The Refurbishment Project, will completely renovate the East Building with new infrastructure, facilities, IT, workspaces and bookshelves. The workspaces in the West Building will also be upgraded to the same high standard.

The Library will continue to offer a service during the phased refurbishment which completes in early 2016.

New Teaching Labs for Biomedical Life Sciences (BLS) and Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC)

The University is investing in new state-of-the-art teaching laboratories for BLS and LEC.

The two ‘super labs’ will house up to 216 students across two floors, incorporating preparatory rooms and other facilities. Both labs have been designed to be easily subdivided, allowing multiple disciplines to use the laboratories simultaneously.

The construction is aiming to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and follow a low energy strategy which uses renewable energy.

The building will provide access for all throughout. The way finding is set to be clear and intuitive; the new building will link into the principle horizontal and vertical circulation routes of the LEC building.

Opening in February 2015.

Fylde College External Refurbishment

Fylde College is undergoing an external refurbishment completing in September 2014. All windows and doors are being replaced and the façade of the building is being renovated.

Urban Landscape Design Competition

An Urban Design Competition has been launched by the University calling teams to rejuvenate the campus’ principal walkway, known as ‘The Spine’.

‘The Spine’, is the partially covered pedestrian walkway spanning one end of the campus to the other over a distance of one kilometre. It was originally designed to allow pedestrians to walk the whole length of the campus whilst providing a degree of protection from the weather.

Portions of the walkway were left open to the sky to let in the natural light, avoiding the need to provide under canopy lighting in part.

The original 1960’s architects and master planners of the University (Shepheard Epstein) designed ‘The Spine’ to follow the natural gradient of the land.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is managing the competition process and a short list of five teams has been invited to develop their concepts in response to the University’s outline brief.

The five teams will submit their proposals in September 2014.

Physics Building Refurbishment

A refurbishment project is being planned to create a world-class research and teaching environment for Lancaster University’s top ranking Physics Department.

It will feature state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, upgraded research facilities and a new social learning provision in a glazed atrium.

This redevelopment project, due to complete in 2016, will be phased to minimise disruption and will result in an innovative building that enhances the public face of the Physics at Lancaster improving the working environment for staff and students.

Investment in Student AccommodationFollowing the completion of the refurbishment of Bowland South, East and Tower into new student accommodation in 2013/14, the next project is the refurbishment of Ash House.

Work will start in November 2014 to refurbish the accommodation and provide 92 high quality bed spaces.

These will be available for students from September 2015.

A new Student Accommodation Strategy is being developed to ensure that high quality, value for money accommodation is available both on and off campus for all Lancaster students.

Sustainability

Wind Turbine

The University’s wind turbine celebrated its first anniversary in December 2013, and its benefits have exceeded expectations.

During its first year it produced nearly 25% more electricity than anticipated and as a result reduced the University’s carbon emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes CO2.

New Electric Vans

Three of the Facilities vehicle fleet have been replaced with new electric vehicles which will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 75% (1 .13 tonnes CO2e/per annum).

This significant reduction in emissions is due in part to replacing old inefficient vehicles with new and to the low carbon emissions from the University’s electricity; 13% of which is supplied by the wind turbine and 25% by the Combined Heat and Power engine.

Grant Funding to Help Reduce Carbon Emissions

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has awarded Lancaster University grant funding for the installation of a large thermal store for the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in the Energy Centre.

The new thermal store will improve the output of the CHP, which supplies the campus with low-carbon heat and electricity, and will help reduce the University’s costs and carbon emissions.

HEFCE has also awarded the University grant funding for improved insulation for the campus district heating system which distributes heat from the Energy Centre to most of the buildings on campus.

The improved insulation will reduce energy losses.

Energy Centre Optimisation

The University’s Energy Centre supplies district heating and electricity to the campus. Several optimisation projects have been identified and these will be implemented over the next few years. The projects will improve the efficiency of heat generation and distribution across the campus.

Energy Use On Campus

The University will embark on a Communication and Engagement Programme to influence the culture around energy use on campus.

The aim of the programme is to increase awareness amongst stake holders on energy consumption and encourage actions to reduce it.
