These are important keys to succeeding in yourcommitment.

You have come to Golden Gate University from another place. For some of you, that place is geographic: You have left family and friends in

another part of the world or nation to attend GGU. You may have stayed in your samegeographic place but come to GGU in cyberspace. Or perhaps that other place is

professional: You are preparing to end the type of work youve been doing to make a career move. For most of you, the place that youve come from is personal. Youve set into motion a change in

the direction of your life. For many of you, all of these apply.

But whether the place you came from is a different latitude and longitude, a line of work that nolonger fits, or a reordering of your life, this journey requires a multi-level commitment.

If all you do is bury yourself in books, then youll wear yourself down and out. To function at anoptimal level, you want to be charged with the right grade of fuel enough sleep, the best food and

    adequate exercise.

EatJunk food may seem easier but in the long run, youll pay a price. Good nutrition is another es-sential part of mental functioning. While somefoods can help you think more clearly (like blue-berries), better yet is a well-rounded diet that em-phasizes foods that are green in color (the darkerthe better) and that you can eat without open-

ing a can or box. Youll experience rewards fromplanning ahead, cooking for yourself and bring-ing your own food to campus. For times thatdoesnt work, our GGU Caf in the Student ServicesCenter has wholesome soups, salads, fruits andvegetables and some nearby restaurants alsooffer fresh foods to help you making the grade.

SleepIt turns out that getting enough sleep improvesnot just memory, which helps with total cogni-tive abilities. This helps all around and not justat exam times. Skimping on sleep will, in the

long run, hurt success. Getting at least 8-hoursof sleep a night is optimal. A rested mind is asharp mind.

MoveThis means exercising more than your eyes andhands (that thing that happens when you readfrom one page or screen to the next). But it alsodoesnt mean going to extremes. One small exam-

ple is taking a break every 90 minutes instead ofpushing through another two hours in the library.Walk around the block or just around the cam-pus. This kind of light exercise is re-energizing andhelps your mind work efficiently. During the week, walk when you could ride (take the stairs unlessyoure carrying a very heavy book bag). Youll alsoprobably get to your destination faster. Anotheridea is to check out this nifty website for a list ofterrific ways to experience the Bay Areas beautifulnatural world. Scroll down to ongoing activitiesor click on any month for some ways to regenerate

your energy when youre not in class or at work.

is glad to help you create a plan. Were here to help you study well -- and live well.Wellness [email protected]

    DONT ACHOO!!! TO

    A COLD OR THE FLU

    By Silvia Alejandra Chan

The Fall and Winter seasons are coming soon and this means flu season isnt far behind. There are many ways to prevent a cold or flu. In this article, I will discuss five ways to pre-vent that bothersome ACHOO!!!. It is very important to live a healthy life and follow these rules:

Flu shot:One of the most effective ways to prevent the fluis to get a flu shot. The flu vaccine is available intwo forms, a shot and a nasal spray. According toHighlight Health, the flu vaccine is 80% effectiveagainst influenza in healthy adults. If you do notknow where to get the vaccine flu shot, and trythe newly enhanced Flu Clinic Locator, poweredby Google, which provides information on whereto find seasonal flu vaccinations near your home.

Wash Your Hands:Wash your hands and do not touch your face:Most cold and flu viruses are spread by directcontact. The most common way to catch the fluis to touch your own hands, nose, face, or mouthwith dirty hands. Someone who has the flu sneezesonto their hand, and then touches the telephone, the keyboard, a kitchen glass would definitely passthe germs to your body. The germs can live forhours so please remember to wash your hands of-ten. If you can not find a sink nearby to wash yourhands, use hand sanitizer which is also very helpful.

    Load up on Antioxi-

dants and Vitamin C:Antioxidants are nutrients in our foods that can en-hance immune defense and therefore reducing therisk of catching a cold. Most commonly known an-tioxidants are found in blueberries, tomatoes, liveroil, broccoli, squash, nuts, eggs, fish, and peaches. In addition, Vitamin C can also help protect youfrom catching a cold or flu. Vitamin C is essential fora healthy and strong immune system. You can buyVitamin C supplements at your closest drug store.

Exercise is for the Wise:Exercise and get the right amount of sleep: Byexercising three times a week for 30 minutes perday and sleeping 7 to 10 hours per day, youcan live a healthier life and prevent a cold or flu.

H2O is the way to go:Water flushes your system, washing out the poisons as it rehydrates you. A typical, healthy adult needs

eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids each day.

The annual San Francisco LGBT PrideCelebration 2010 was held at the Civic Center

Plaza, June 26-27, 2010.This event is held yearly to support San Franciscos advocacy of equal rights in the United States.

This years theme was 40 and Fabulous, celebrating 40 years of this well-known San

Francisco tradition. The occasion was met by an array of festivities including the SanFrancisco LGBT Pride Celebration Parade down Market St with almost 200 colorful floats.Stalls were set up with a view of City Hall, in which bracelets, multi-colored sunglasses, aware-ness campaigns, rainbow feathered boas, food stalls with sizzling meats (hotdogs, barbeque, etc),were being sold and promoted. Of course, what made the event spectacular were the peopleattending wearing all sorts of rainbow-colored costumes, most wearing next to nothing at all!

There was dancing in the streets, rainbows in clothing, flags, flashy beads, pins about every corner youturn. Of course, the altruistic purpose of the whole celebration was not forgotten as there were volun-teers left and right offering pins to be purchased in suppport of equal rights. The crowd ranged fromthe youth to the older generation, with the youth prancing about in swimwear and skin tight suits whilethe older generation patronized the likes of Cher, Liza Minnelli, and other icons in this colorful commu-nity. Masks were even being sold with the faces of these icons, making the crowd quite a sight to see.It was an exhilarating celebration held on one of the sunniest days of June, that consisted of performanc-es, music, exhibitors, and celebrating the colorful and free-spirited LGBT community of San Francisco.

Take Me Out To The BallGame

    GGU Community Days

    By Sofia Soriano, MS IMC

As a student at GGU, the old

work-before-play clich exists, however its nice once in awhile to take part in off-campusevents that bring the GGU com-munity together. The Giants vs.Mets game on July 17th was agreat example of such an eventsince it afforded a uniqueexperience and opportunity formany GGU and internationalstudents to learn about a sportlong heralded and treasured asAmericas Favorite Pastime.

The Giants v Mets game is justone of several events throughoutthe year that the Office ofStudent Affairs hosts for GGUstudents, alumni and their gueststo get involved withexciting activities hosted by theCity, and an opportunity for thestudent population to re-connectwith the local community.Tickets sold fast; the phone hot-

line was ringing non-stop withdemands from students to savethem seats.

Food, drink and conversationflowed easily; the sounds ofchatter, excitement (and last-minute explanations and predic-tions!) filled the air.

    from the Office of Student

Affairs and the IAA (International)Department during theTailgating Party held before thegame at AT&T Park.

On entering the stadium, we weregreeted by a huge baseball gloveand Coke bottle, one of the mainattractions of AT&T Park. Weshould all feel proud and fortunatethat we have one of the best base-ball stadiums in the nation so close

to GGU. Huge screens entertainedus before the players walked ontothe field. The stadium erupted withcheers. It wasnt long before rule-books were soon tossed aside aswe found ourselves chanting andcheering along with the crowd, our eyes riveted to the field. Wecouldnt help but be swept up bythe energy and excitement thatfilled the stadium.

The day concluded with a fireworksdisplay. I cant think of a moreperfect way to have ended thenight than with the night sky lit upwith bursts of color. All in all, itwas a thrilling experience. And whoknows, hopefully by this time nextyear, I wont even be needing myrule-book.

An informational interview, when conducted properly, can be a useful networking tool. It can helpyou build a network of contacts in your field of interest and its a great way to get the inside

scoop on what it really is like to work in a particular job.

Start by researching what industry you want to work in. Then narrow it down to a few companies, andsome particular jobs. Find people in those roles at those companies and ask them if you can meetwith them for 20-25 minutes. Let them know that you are interested in their career field and want toknow a little bit more about the job they do. One way to get in touch with potential contacts is throughthe GGU group on LinkedIn. Many GGU alumni are members of the group and since these are peopleyou already have something in common with, it is a good way of establishing connections.

Remember that an informational interview is not about you; it is about the person you are interviewing. Itis an opportunity for you (the interviewer) to gain a better understanding of an industry, company, or aparticular job. This practice takes you beyond job descriptions and skill or education requirements. Askyour interviewee what a typical day on the job is like for them. Ask them to tell you about the culture ofthe company and what skills and characteristics one must possess to succeed in that role. Ask them whatsteps they took to get to where they are right now and where they see themselves in five or ten years.Conducting informational interviews will not only help you gain important information that could boost yourcareer but it will also get you comfortable with the idea of interviewing and communicating effectively. Itcan increase your self-confidence and prepare you for a job interview in your field. Informational interviewsare a great way to pick up key topics of interest for people in the company or job that you want to seeyourself in. Ask your interviewee what economic, political, and social issues are affecting their career field.

Informational interviews are also a great way to expand your network. Ask your interviewee if theycan refer you to any colleagues that you can speak with.

    Tips:

Informational interviews help you build a long-lasting network. Effective informational interviews caneven lead to an internship or a job offer sometime in the future. At the very least, the informationyou gain from your interview can help you improve your resume, cover letter, or interviewing skills. For more ideas and tips, log onto GGU careers and access tutorials on informational interview-ing through CareerBeam. You can also make an appointment with a career counselor at the Of-fice of Career Planning to help review your request letters, thank you letters, or interview questions.

    Informational Interviewing:

How It Can Help You Get Ahead

Be clear about what you want to gainfrom the interview- know what your inter-ests are. This will help you ask questionsthat can get you the information you need.

Be polite- remember that this person istaking time out of their day to speak to you.

Be thankful- sending a thank you card af-

ter your interview will not only show that you were appreciative of their time, butalso help the person remember you.

Keep in touch- this does not mean startadding them on Facebook, Myspace, Twit-ter, and every other social networking siteout there. You could ask them to connectwith you on LinkedIn or even short emailafter a few months will suffice. Ask themhow they are doing and let them knowof your progress in your career search.

Moodle is actually the name of the award-win-ning learning management system that Gold-en Gate University will be adopting in Summer2011. And, if youre really curious, the strangename is an acronym for Modular Object-Ori-ented Dynamic Learning Environment (althoughthe M originally stood for Martin in hon-or of the systems inventor Martin Dougiamas).

Moodle is being used to teach courses in bigschools, small schools, local schools (like San Fran-cisco State University) and international schools(like Open University in the UK which is the largestonline education provider in the world). In fact, as ofJanuary of this year, more than 32 million studentsin over 3 million courses use Moodle. And Moodlewill arrive in GGUs own CyberCampus in 2011!

By Lynette Webb and your CyberCampus Team

OK, so what on earth is a Moodle?

    a) A cross between a poodle and a maltese

    b) Wisconsin specialty: A casserole featuring noodles and mayonnaise

    c) Googles new mood-sensing plugin(it offers suggestions like: Why not search for Michael Jackson lyrics when youre less

    cranky?)

    d) None of the above

Answer: d) None of the above

CyberCampus, Golden Gate Universitys on-line learning department, has delivered classesfor more than a decade now. Over the past13 years CyberCampus learning platform hasshifted a few times, but in 2011 its shift tothe Moodle system will mark the biggest leapin design and function for students to date.

What will this mean for you and your onlinecourses? Well, your fully-online CyberCampuscourses and your Blended, Hybrid and WebEn-hanced courses will have a fresh new look. And,some of the semantics will be a bit different too.For instance, if youve ever turned in papers tothe Dropbox area of CyberCampus youll nowbe turning in papers to the Assignments area.

A Message from CyberCampusMAD FOR MOODLE

    GGUs NEW COURSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

By now you are no doubt aware of the universitys decision to migrate onto a new Course Man-

agement System, Moodle. It is a decision that has launched a complex project of course mi-gration, training and implementation that will present challenges as well as vast opportunity; aproject that will benefit greatly from thoughtful planning, total commitment and collaboration.

At this early stage (instruction on the new platform will not begin until the summer of 2011), I wouldlike to introduce the names of some of the individuals who will be playing significant roles in this effort. They will be serving as major conduits of information, both within the project and emerging from it.

Kathleen Hance ([email protected]) - A former employee of GGU/CyberCampus, Kate will beserving in the role of Project Manager.Alan Roper ([email protected]) - Another former employee and currently an adjunct colleague, Alan ischairing the Faculty Senates technology committee.Bob Fulkerth ([email protected]) - A member of the full-time faculty, Bob is coordinating the fall

Faculty Retreat during which more information on Moodle will be provided.

Please feel free to contact me ([email protected]), the CyberCampus Help Desk ([email protected]), or any of the above individuals with your questions, concerns and suggestions.

    Marvin [email protected]

Courses will still have lectures and discussions as wellas components like quizzes, videos, PowerPoint slide-shows, etc. But, theres more to look forward to, likea greater availability of materials that can be viewedon portable devices like your iPhone or Blackberry.

Another of Moodles many features allows youto subscribe to any discussion so that youllbe automatically emailed if there is activity in it.

Dont worry, CyberCampus will provide student tutorials beforethe platform is launched so that you can get comfortable withall the features before the Summer 2011 semester begins.

What will Moodle mean for Golden Gate University? One ofits most appealing characteristics is that it will be easierfor GGU to customize Moodles interface and functionsso that it best fits your needs. Moodle is open-sourcesoftware, meaning GGU can freely choose from the manyimprovements made by Moodle programmers worldwide.

Ready to make the move to Moodle yet? Youll behappy you did. Mark your calendars for next summer!
