Campus Center, Central Texas CollegeKilleen, Texas
A rchitect Alison Beck, Freese and Nichols, describes the new Campus Center at Central Texas College as the
campus living room. The College, based in Killeen, Texas, serves a commuter population drawn from the adjacent Fort Hood Army Base and surrounding communities of fam-ily members, base employees and nearby residents. The Center provides a place where students can study for a test in solitude or in groups, meet with friends, or get a cup of cof-fee. The 48,000-square foot building is also where the School of Nursing (the College’s largest class) can conduct graduation cer-emonies in the second floor conference center, which accommodates 500 people. The Board of Trustees can host meetings and presentations for a hundred people in their boardroom; it is where full-service catering facilities can provide banquet services; and it is where students can browse for books and more in a campus bookstore four times the size of the store it replaces.
Located just south of the original 40-year-old student center, the new Center features terra cotta roofs, an upstairs patio and shaded arcades. The structure shares

both the architectural vocabulary and a fresh perspective on the existing, Mediterranean-style campus buildings. A 4,000-square-foot pedestrian plaza that creates a dramatic multi-use space between the two buildings links the old Student Center, scheduled for renovation. Tree-lined stairs on both sides of the Campus Center connect the plaza to new parking at the South entrance. The site utilizes native and adapted species of shade trees, multi-trunk flowering trees, shrubs and groundcover on more than half the open space, providing open lawns and shaded areas with benches. Banded panels of brick pavers and decorative pedestrian-scale light-ing with pole-mounted banners define the hard surfaces and edges of the plaza space, and disguise an emergency-vehicle access lane as a pedestrian mall.
Inside the new Student Center, a grand staircase winding around the clock tower graces the two-story dining hall. On the sec-ond floor, the conference center can house large events or be subdivided into four smaller spaces for more flexibility. “Pre-function” areas at large events offer nooks for everyday use as study spaces.
