Institutional Camps by Definition An institutional camp is any camp that is

owned or operated by a member institution OR an employee of the member institution’s athletics department, either on OR off campus, and in which prospective student athletes participate.

Institutional Camps Virginia Tech Policy- ALL CAMPS NEED

APPROVAL

Camps for athletes prior to their 9th grade year (7th in Men’s Basketball) may not need to meet all the regulations in 13.12

When Can Camps Be Held? 13.12.1.3

Institutional Camps/Clinics may not be conducted during a dead period

No recruiting- even verbal or written offers- may occur during an Institutional Camp

When Can Camps Be Held (MBB) 13.12.1.1.4

Can only be conducted during June, July, August, or any calendar week that includes days of those months.

For example: May 30-June 5

Can only be conducted during two periods of 15 consecutive days in the months of June and July or any calendar week that includes those months.

A student athlete who only lectures or demonstrates may NOT receive compensation

Is not hired on the basis of reputation or contact with potential prospects

Employment for Basketball May NOT hire an individual associated

with a recruited prospect until the prospect has enrolled at a different institution OR has exhausted eligibility at our institution

An individual associated with a recruited prospect may NOT volunteer

You may hire an outside agency to help with registration and fees

Discounts Interpretation- 08/27/2009

An institution may offer discounted admissions to its camps and clinics based on objective criteria unrelated to athletics abilities (e.g., registration prior to a specific date, online registration, attendance at multiple sessions), provided such discounts are published and available on an equal basis to all who qualify.

Insurance Virginia Tech Policy

Campers must have own medical insuranceMinimum $500,000 per occurrence with

Virginia Tech named as “additional insured”

New Legislation 2009-51-B

In sports other than football, to specify that an institution's camp or clinic shall be conducted on the institution's campus or within a 100-mile radius of the institution's campus.

A camp or clinic is considered an institutional camp or clinic if multiple institutions constitute majority ownership (e.g., 51 percent).  Further, such a camp or clinic is considered an institutional camp or clinic for all institutions with any percentage of ownership
