This is hard for them, and they have notcomplained. Whatever appreciation youcan show them, I am sure would be welcome.

Please remember Luther Park whenbooking adult retreats and summercamp this year. This will help the finan-cial situation. When my own congregation,Calvary, got the call in December aboutthe financial situation, they realized theyhad not booked an adult retreat for someyears and immediately booked a retreatweekend.

We are also attempting to sell a pieceof property located across the lake and tothe left (if you were to stand at the site ofthe cross near lake).

It is ironic that Luther Park BibleCamp’s existence is so vulnerable dur-ing tough times, and yet it is duringtough times that we cling to God forfaith in the future and strength to getthough with grace and dignity.

It is my prayer that we all, and espe-cially kids, learn to put God at the centerof our existence in good times and intough times.

We all need to be mindful of placingreminders in our lives to keep God at thecenter such as going to church, readingscripture on a regular basis and calling onGod to help us with our daily decisions,attitudes, relationships and goals.

It is easy to get caught up with all oflife’s distractions and allow it to pull usfrom our center. A camp such as LutherPark is important in our lives in renew-ing our personal commitments and

realigning our relationship with God.Take advantage of the opportunity of

Luther Park by visiting, retreating or camp-ing and receive its blessings on your life.

Thank God for all the blessings onLuther Park over the past 50 years and joinme in a prayer that God blesses Luther Park for another 50 years.

You are all invited to the 50th anniver-sary celebration this summer at the OpenHouse on July 18th.

Yours in Christ,

Paula Bergs, PresidentLuther Park Board of Directors

EDITOR’S NOTE:Special thanks to Paula Bergs for hersix years of dedicated service on theboard of directors at Luther Park. An Update on Luther Park’sFinancial Condition...

Greetings from Luther Park Bible Campand Retreat Center. We give God thanks forthe prayers and financial support from ourmember congregations and individualsthroughout the year and especially at year-end 2008! Even though we still ended the yearwith a deficit, it was decreased from $70,000to less than $20,000! Thank you for yourefforts on our behalf. And thanks be to God!

We don’t anticipate the economy improv-ing greatly, so we took action at the end of2008 and into 2009 to cut expenses as much aspossible while still providing quality ministryto our retreat groups and summer campers.

Our challenge/opportunity now is to con-tinue this wonderful partnership that wasstrengthened in 2008, into 2009 and beyond

This year we will celebrate 50 years ofministry (1959-2009). We invite everyone tojoin us for our Open House on Sat., July 18,when we’ll celebrate what God has enabledover the past 50 years and give thanks for allour supporters and member congregations.

Thank you so much for your support in’08. As we look to ’09 and the increasedcosts and scholarship requests that we experi-enced last year, and possibly will again thisyear, we ask you to prayerfully consider whatyou are able to provide in 2009.

Another way that you can support (andenjoy) the camp is by coming to LutherPark for retreats year-round, encouragingchildren and youth to attend summer Biblecamp for a life-changing experience, invitingcollege age young people to consider workingat Luther Park this summer, and makingLuther Park visible in your congregation allyear long (bulletin board, prayers andannouncements, newsletter articles, campSunday, etc.).

If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail me at: [email protected], orcall me at 612-987-6628.

God’s blessings to all.

Executive DirectorJoel Legred

Luther Park: A partner forparents in providing a safeplace for children to experi-ence something new and tocelebrate God’s love.

This year is Luther Park’s 50th anniver-sary. For 50 years our camp has provideda place for children and adults to enjoynature, new friends and to renew anddeepen their relationship with God with-out all of life’s distractions.

Life is always full of distractions, and Iworry about the new distractions youngpeople face with cell phones, texting andFacebook which forge such impersonalways for them to develop their relation-ships. This coupled with tough economictimes now, and in the foreseeable future,provides extra challenges for all of us atmany levels but especially for parents.

Luther Park has, for all these years, been a partner for parents in providing asafe place for their children to get away,

experience something new and different,and to celebrate God’s love. Luther Park’s

very existence depends on camp and retreatfees, individual giving and church allocations.

This past year was challenging forLuther Park’s financial picture. Camperand retreat fees were down significantly lastyear as people were feeling the economiccrunch and did not come to camp in num-bers needed to sustain the budget.Individual giving actually increased show-ing us just how committed many of you are.It is truly inspirational and amazing.

When the December financial crisiscame, the response was almost miracu-lous. The extra giving by individuals andchurches transformed a major crisis into amild crisis—as we are not out of the woods.

The deficit decreased from close to$70,000 to under $20,000. The executiveboard has been meeting monthly withExec. Dir. Joel Legred to help managethe crisis and decide where spending willbe kept down. We cut overall spendingfor the year and reduced staff to halftime for the past few months.

The Son’s ReflectionAs I sit here on my first leg of the

infamous recruiting trail in the frozenland of Concordia College in Moorhead,I am thinking back to why I wanted towork at a camp and what drew me toLuther Park back in 1995. I wonder ifthose reasons are even close to why stu-dents today are drawn to particularcamps?

After talking with some students andformer staff, here are some of the thingsI’ve discovered. From working at acamp you can:

— gain spiritual growth beyond what you would expect;

— have a great summer hanging out with kids;

— have the opportunity to worship and study the Bible everyday;

— make life-long friends; — and have a ton of fun in God’s great

outdoors. Where else do you find a community

of your peers who are all there doing thesame things for the same reasons?

Having a servant heart is what ittakes, and the cool thing about this sum-mer’s theme is that it focuses on just that.Mark 10:45 says: For the Son of Man

came not to be served but to serve, andto give his life as a ransom for many.

What a wonderful thing to know thatJesus came to serve us and gave His lifefor us. All of these former, current andfuture staff give selflessly of themselvesfor our youth.

Please join me in prayer as youngadults make the choice of working incamping ministries all over the country.

In Christ's Perfect Love,

Anna Treague
