If I allow myself to daydream in my beautiful office, with bird feeders, the creek, and droning cicadas just outside the window, it seems to me that the entire Camphill Special School ”family “ is a pond. We all are raindrops falling into that pond, making gentle (usually!) ripples that intersect the waves made by other people – I mean, other raindrops. The incredibly interconnected and complicated pattern made by all those undulating little waves represents sharing life and learning as a family. Doesn’t it? In my daydream it does!

I cannot explain how our students and their families affect me or express what cherished friendships with students, coworkers, families, and other staff members mean to me. I find it difficult to articulate that I am so grateful to be part of a community that changes lives, including mine, each and every day.

But many of the many incredibly warm and loving people I have had the privilege of coming to know over the past four years are very good at express-ing their feelings about our school. Their beautifully written insights into what it means to be a member of Camphill Special School’s family, sharing life and learning with our students and each other, make up this year’s annual report.

Many of the photographs in this report were taken by Marc Bryan-Brown. Marc is a Camphill Special School parent, and I believe you will find his pictures not only beautiful, but meaningful. You can see more of Marc’s work at www.bryan-brown.com.

I am grateful to everyone who contributed their stories, and I hope you find them as inspiring as I do. Thank you to our many, many friends and supporters for making these stories possible.

Dear Families and Friends,

I am pleased to report to you that Camphill Special School is healthy. Our finances are strong, enrollment is stable, more and more coworkers are studying for four years in our School of Curative Education, and community awareness of our work is growing.

Camphill Special School is not contented, however! Our goals of continually improving the school, and ensuring its existence for those children and families who need it, are never satisfied. Over the past year, two accomplishments are espe-cially noteworthy. First, our School of Curative Educa-tion awarded its first diplomas, making the recipients “Certified Curative Educators.” These young people will carry on and expand the reach and influence of Camphill’s mission. Thank you to Jan Christopher Goeschel for making the School of Curative Educa-tion a qualified and professional program, and congratulations to our first graduates.

Second, this year marked the creation of the Beaver Run Foundation, a separate organization that exists

only to ensure the continued survival of Camphill Special School and its mission. We are especially grateful to Eric Maskin, a recent winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and a retiring member of our Finance Committee, and his wife, Gayle Sawtelle, Princeton University professor, for their exceedingly generous inaugural gift to the foundation. Eric and Gayle are the parents of Joseph, a former Camphill Special School student. Thank you, Eric and Gayle.

I also wish to thank Ronald Landon for his many years of service on our Board of Directors. Ron was instrumental in helping us to create and utilize a strategic plan for the school. We wish him and his wife Joyce many happy hours “on the Bay.”

Last, I wish to thank each and every one of you for your confidence and your loyal support of Camphill Special School. We could not exist without your friendship. Craig L. Adams President, Board of Directors

Inner peace has not set up permanent residence within me. A fragile guest, it settles for what seems like a few heartbeats and then takes flight. Those moments when it does fold its wings and rests are often unexpected life-changing glimpses of what is possible. Such a brief and momentous visit occurred at twilight at Beaver Run several years ago.

The hours my grandson Jackson and I spend togeth-er always are filled with laughter, hugs, and food. It is the saying goodbye that makes me ache. I know that he has the best of parents, devoted and wise, that at Beaver Run he lives in a house that has become a second home, that he is surrounded by householders and friends who care about him. But somehow at the end of a visit, emptiness always accompanies me down the road.

One evening after I had taken him back in time for dinner, I met a young man, a student who also lives in community. Although he was accompanied by a friend, his long legs had carried him out ahead. For a few moments it was just he and I, youth and age.

At duskI left him there,My boy’s boy, my grandson,For others to hold.

Alone, I climbed the pathTo car and home.

I saw him then, walkingDown the path, watching me,Some stranger’s son,Tall and fair.

We met,Stood silent,Still,Until he spoke,I thought,A language from another world.

To let him think I understood,I curved my lips into a smileAnd nodded–up and down,Up and down.

He believed. And lightly laying handsUpon my throat,He bowed his head.As one, we rested thus,Brow to brow,Beyond all words.

And so the memory remainsAs though in amber held.

He has been attending Camphill since the year 2002. When we pick him up, the people there are always very kind. For example, the first day I went with my dad to drop Aaron off, I saw they had a basketball net. I asked if I could play, and they were more than happy to say yes. When we pick Aaron up he talks about what he’s done at Camphill, and the new people that he meets. About three days after we pick him up, he starts saying, “Camp-hill; Camphill soon.” To this day Aaron still loves it. Camp-hill is an amazing school and it could not get any better. They have plays, feasts, brunches, and so much more. Over the years, I’ve done many things at Camphill with my brother Aaron. I spent the night, then the next morning went horseback riding, went on a 10-mile hike, saw a few plays, and got to look at and play with the animals they have there.

I want to thank everyone at Camphill so much for taking in Aaron, accepting him, and loving him. Without you, I don’t know where Aaron and our family would be today. Although Aaron is getting old and soon will be graduating, I guarantee that he will always remember this school. The word Camphill will always be coming from his mouth, and will always be in my heart.

My feelings about Camphill are very happy. It has great nature around every corner. I think the nature around Camphill is very nice and amazing. They have very nice picnics, cabins, and especially people. I am happy that my older brother Aaron has gotten to go to Camphill. The first house I remember was Rowan house. When I was younger I remember the pool and our whole family going into it. I think it’s a very good school for Aaron, because there are very nice people. Whenever he comes back home, I always hear him talking about Camphill. Whenever I go to Camphill, I wish that I could stay there instead of my house. I always like going back to Camphill to get Aaron. Whenever we come back to Camphill, I feel even better.

Camphill: always in my heartBy Elliott Herbert, Aaron’s 12-year-old brother

When people ask me if I have an older brother I tell them yes. I consider myself to be very lucky because Aaron Herbert is my older brother, and he has autism.

To recall my first views of Camphill, I must go back to the age of ten. Stepping onto the campus, I was amazed by the calm, orderly beauty of the entire grounds and how the community functioned. I was greeted by many assuring smiles of adults and children as well as the squealing farm animals. The result of the visit left me reassured of Aaron’s place there, as well as envious of his wonder-ful surroundings. For the next six years I would jump at the chance to visit him, not only to see him but to pet the horses, watch the sheep, visit with the people, and eat the wonderful brunches we were constantly invited to.

Camphill is really a marvelous environment for my brother, and I have complete confidence in the school and community.

The changes that have occurred in my brother are nothing short of astonishing. His disposition has be-come nearly always calm, his temperament has greatly

improved, and his manners now surpass those of the rest of the family. After a few days of being home, he always aches to return, constantly informing us that “Camphill [is] coming soon.” He has blossomed and thrived in this environment, and I can’t imagine a better place for him. Camphill is amazing.

It’s difficult to know where to begin to express our thoughts about what Camphill Special School has meant to our family. This unique com-munity has come to serve a special role in the life not only of our son Aaron, but also in the lives of each of us.

lege of meeting her soon after she arrived. Mindy and I shared an instant connection. Whether we are laughing, talking seriously, being silly, or daydreaming, I feel a special bond between us and am grateful that our lives have touched.

As a family member, administrator, or friend, the essence of Camphill is compassion.

Long before I started working in the office, I knew Camp-hill Special School through my sister-in-law, Laurie, a student for many years. The Benton family is a big bunch, and when any or all of us participated in an event at Laurie’s school, she radiated with joy and pride. My awareness of Beaver Run was through the eyes of a fam-ily member: a special school, a caring community, a safe environment, and a home away from home for all of the students (everyone was residential then).

My association with Camphill Special School began to evolve when as a young mother I accepted a part-time accounting position that allowed me to be home with my daughter during the day. That was twenty-five years ago! At the time I did not realize I was making a decision that would allow me to grow into who I am today. My fulfillment from working in the office comes from seeing firsthand the impact that Camphill Special School has on our students’ lives and knowing that my efforts assist in making it all happen.

Several years ago a young lady with an infectious laugh and a joy for life came to Beaver Run and I had the privi-

The essence of Camphill: compassionBy Pamela Benton, Finance Administrator

From the moment we first stepped foot on the campus, we knew that this was an extraordinary place. A sense of deep serenity and love was palatable. After six years, we remain awestruck by the beauty of the people and environment each time we are there.

Since arriving at Beaver Run in the fall of 2002, Aaron has lived in four houses, including his current placement in The Transition Program at Beaver Hill. Teachers, thera-pists, house parents, and coworkers have all treated him with the utmost compassion and patience, while simul-taneously continuously challenging him to new heights. Aaron has made tremendous progress academically, socially, and emotionally. He has learned to do things with a level of independence that we would never have dreamt possible.

We will never forget arriving for a visit one evening during Aaron’s first year at Beaver Run. We arrived just after dinner, when the house mother quietly greeted us and pointed a finger toward the dining room. There was Aaron, quietly and carefully sweeping up the floor. We watched in amazement as he meticulously swept the debris into a dustpan, discarded it, and put everything away in a closet. Fighting back tears, we were speechless. Although a trivial task for most people, those of us who love Aaron would not have imagined this possible before his arrival at Camphill Special School.

In this age of iPods and computer games, Aaron’s siblings never hesitate to drop everything for the opportu-nity to visit him. They have enjoyed sampling the special community life, including playing with students and other children in the community, attending functions and perfor-mances, hiking around the campus, and visiting the animals.

Our entire family has been changed forever and profoundly by this extraordinary community. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all for your dedica-tion, hard work, and especially the love you’ve extended to our son and to us all.

Brendan worked as a student aide at Beaver Run last year and the experience transformed him. He discovered new capacities in himself, enjoying working with the chil-dren so much that he has decided to return this year and continue his studies in our Camphill School of Curative Education.

Of course, while he was working, it was a wonderful thing that his son, my precious grandson Owen, could be part of our kindergarten program. Owen loves the kindergarten. Brendan says that it brings him great peace of mind to know that Owen is being loved and nurtured through the daily and weekly rhythms of the kindergarten, and I wholeheartedly agree!

I have taught at Beaver Run for six years now and my appreciation continues to grow. It is hard work, but so different than any other school where I have taught. It is a joy working with like-minded people and being part of something bigger than my own goals and intentions, truly an experience of heaven on earth. It is immensely fulfilling spending my days with others who share a vision of creating a community where we nurture and support not only the children, but each other, too. Beaver Run has been a blessing for me and my family.

Him: What’s confused mean?

I: Like when your head is upside down.

Him: Do I have to go to the hospital?

I: No.

Him: But I have to go really!

I: But they have to know why your head is upside down before they can help you, do you know why?

Him: It’s because of . . . because of . . . crshhh!

I: What does crshhh mean?

Him: Thunder!

I: But there is no thunder.

Him: He said there is. Is it? When? Now?

I: I think it is already over.

Him: Did I miss it?

I: No, you couldn’t have, it was inside of you!

Him: With lightning and everything?

I: Oh yes, lightning, big dark clouds . . . everything, everything.

Him: Noooo . . . who did it?

I: Maybe the house gnomes?

Him: I’ll get them!

I: You can’t, but you can talk to them.

Him: How?

I: You have to whisper to them or they get scared.

Him: I’ll yell at them!

I: But then you can’t tell them to stop

sending storms to your heart . . .

Him: What if it doesn’t work? What if my heart still needs heart medicine? What if they don’t want to be my friends?

I: It takes awhile . . .

Him: No, I hate you!

I: Why?

Him: Because you said it takes awhile.

I: Not if we do it together . . .

Him: Like when we take a walk together?

I: Kind of, but it is in your dreams.

Him: What if I dream about the wrong things, what if I dream about electric wires instead, what if I can’t sleep because of it?

I: Then you just have to put your blinkers on and go on the right dream road!

Him: What if I get it wrong again, what will the house gnomes say?

I: They ’ll just tell you to try again until it works!

Him: Then will they talk to me? What about the storm?

I: You tell them that the storm should stay outside of you not inside because it makes everything go upside down and it makes you need more heart medicine!

Him: What will I get instead of a storm?

I: How about a heart-catcher?

Him: What is that?

I: It’s like a tool, like an angel who will catch your heart when it is trying to fly away or when the storm makes it go upside down.

Him: Huh, funny isn’t it?

I: Yes! Should we go then?

Him: To where?

I: To the dream road?

Him: Can I come with?

I: Sure, but you have to close your eyes and try to sleep.

Him: No, first the song and the prayer and then the dream road.

I: Alright then.

About a half hour later

Him: Anna?

I: Yes?

Him: I love this house so much!

I: Yes, I love it too, now you better go to bed–tomorrow is Wednesday!

Him: Yeah, how about that, tomorrow is Wednesday!

I: Good night now!

Him: Good night!

I: Good night!

Him: Anna?

I: Yes?

Him: Funny, isn’t it?

I: Are you smiling?

Him: Yes!

I: Well then, it is a little funny!

A little bit of heavenBy Maureen Tracy, Camphill Special School teacher, parent, and grandparent

After living in Oregon and Colorado, where I explored different alternative schools and intentional communities, I returned to my home state of Penn- sylvania with my four-year-old son, Brendan, and deliberately chose to live near a Waldorf school. I discovered Beaver Run when I visited a May Fair celebration in 1988 and I immediately felt very much at home. As a single parent I contemplated becoming a member of the community, but the time wasn’t right and I found myself teaching in the local pub-lic schools.

The years passed and when Brendan was fifteen, I ap-plied to become a foster parent. Eleven-year-old Jim came into our lives and he eventually became a student at Beaver Run. Beaver Run turned Jim’s life around in more ways than I can tell you. After completing grade twelve in 2006, he is happily learning and thriving at Camphill Soltane.

During the past year, faculty members from the Camphill School of Curative Education were asked to lead work-shops and develop curriculum for similar training centers internationally.

With joy and enthusiasm we braved a Canadian winter (and a spring that felt like winter), hiked mountains in Kyrgyzstan, and rode an elephant in a steamy Thai jungle. This sounds a bit like we should change our name to the Indiana Jones School of Curative Education! Meet-

ing our colleagues and the children and young people with whom they live and work has made the world seem very small indeed.

We found children with special needs, bringing their unique ability to teach their teachers to classrooms all around the world. Regardless of culture, language, or landscape, we found sister schools wherever we were.

At home, the first three graduates of the Camphill School of Curative Education were awarded Diplomas in Cura-tive Education, recognized by the International Curative Education and Social Therapy Council. The new gradu-ates are entitled to use the professional designation ”Certified Curative Educator“ (CCE), representing a new profession in North America. Receiving their diplomas were Emma Brunner, Maria McLaughlin, and Andreas Schuschke. Curative education is a holistic approach to the education of children and adolescents utilized at our school and the worldwide network of schools associated with the Council.

contribute to this smaller but thriving Camphill community. The classroom routine was replaced with a fulfilling work routine, at a farm with land to clear, gardens to plant, animals to care for, and a household to sustain.

We have seen Emily grow and mature in both her work and her relationships. Because we live nearby, we have had opportunities to visit and volunteer our time in practi-cal ways and as part of this delightful extended family. We learned slowly and steadily to view Emily as an adult, with her own view of what her future should be.

We feel confident that Emily ’s two years at The Transition Program have prepared her for the next step–a move to Camphill Soltane. She is ready. And if we can just run fast enough to keep pace with her, so are we.

From teenager to adult: a transition timeBy John and Mary Pellack, parents and volunteers

As our daughter Emily approached her graduation from twelfth grade, we felt both pride and anticipation. But we also struggled with feelings of uncertainty about the future and our wish to hold on to the special world of child-hood, with the nurturing friendships we all had found at Camphill Special School’s Beaver Run community.

How would Emily adjust to a schedule with greater responsibilities and new challenges? Was she ready for a new roommate, new house parents, and a new home? Would she miss the daily classroom routine? We didn’t want to underestimate Emily ’s coping skills or her maturity, but we knew that change was difficult for her. Adding our own concerns to the ones we anticipated for Emily made us want to cling to what we knew.

As it has turned out, it was good that life continued to propel us forward and that Camphill’s Transition Program was there for us.

When Emily moved in to The Transition Program at Beaver Farm, she did have adjustments to make and a new routine to learn. In the process, she gained a new sense of herself as an emerging young adult, with a lot to

“Clara is taking this very hard,” said Sonja. “She cannot understand why Nina will not be with us. She wonders aloud constantly about why we are moving and why all the other children are not coming with us.”

I asked Sonja if it truly is an advantage to live as a fam-ily at Beaver Run. “Certainly we have much more time together in one sense,” she said. “We are fortunate, for instance, to have meals together three times a day. But believe me, I am not really a ‘stay-at-home mom.’ I simply have children with me all the time at my job and I am constantly juggling.”

What is beautiful about living at Beaver Run is the kind of childhood Clara and Charlotte are experiencing. “They are growing up the way I did,” said Sonja. “They can be outside by themselves, they can walk safely to kindergar-ten, and they have friends over or go to their friends‘ to play. We don’t arrange play dates and spend a lot of time in the car. Between the woods, the animals, the playgrounds, and the pool in the summer . . . we are very lucky.”

The heart of life at Camphill Special School:Tobias, Sonja, Clara, and Charlotte AdamsBy Carol Goetz, Associate Director of Development

“We also bond very closely with parents of our students,” continued Sonja. “It’s so beautiful when the parents care about everyone in the house, from Clara and Charlotte to other students to our coworkers.”

Then there are the students who have been members of Sonja’s and Tobias’ family for nearly a decade. “It ’s been so good for many high school children to live with us,” noted Sonja. “My daughters have had wonderful big sisters and brothers, and Clara and Charlotte often bring out the best in the students.”

Nina is a student from New Hampshire who has taken it upon herself to spend time with Clara and Charlotte. “Nina is a born Waldorf teacher,” exclaimed Sonja. “She has endless patience with my girls, and I can’t tell you how many walks she has taken them on.” This year Sonja and Tobias are taking a break from over a decade of house-parenting twenty-four hours a day and moving to Antanor house. There they will be a family for day students and Nina will not live with them.

Sonja is from Germany and Tobias from England; they both lived in other Camphill communities before coming to Beaver Run to study in what then was called “the semi-nar ” (now the Camphill School of Curative Education). Although Tobias had to leave for six months or so at one point and Sonja was busy undertaking Waldorf teacher training, love triumphed and they were married at Beaver Run in 2001.

When Clara was born, they already were house-parent-ing at Ember. Sonja recalled that students Stevie and Derek were very, very close to Clara. Charlotte arrived in 2003. “It is striking for me to realize,” said Sonja, “that our family really was created here. It’s a very different experience from that of some families who have come to Beaver Run wholly formed. Because our families of origin are so far away, we have bonded with other Beaver Run families as if they are our relatives. For instance, my children have a cousin-like relationship with Kristin and Laurence Sheen’s [other house parents] children. And Melanie [another house mother] has been like a mother to me.

We are “double wired” to Camphill Special School; in September 2008, our grandson Ezra will begin his fifth and senior year, and our daughter Mary will begin her second year as a resident coworker. Over the past three years, we have volunteered for Ezra’s school, too. We have enjoyed tutoring students one-on-one, helping with the garden, preparing meals, and serving on the Development, ProAm, and Grandparent Campaign committees. It is most rewarding and encouraging to see Ezra interact with his schoolmates, housemates, and the many co-workers and teachers that enrich his life at Camphill. Every year we see how he matures and develops, convincing us that to be a part of the Camphill family is a privilege.

We truly feel that we receive far more than we give by spending time at Camphill Special School.

Amidst all the good food, good conversation, and pony rides for the youngsters, about 20 people learned a bit more about what the “special” in Camphill Special School means.

Camphill ProAm: 2008 truly a great yearThe Camphill ProAm just keeps getting better! Hosted by Tennis Addiction Sports Club and presented by PECO, An Exelon Company, the 2008 ProAm raised over $131,000 to benefit our students and programs.

Page 11: CAMPHILL SPECIAL SCHOOL - The Camphill School€¦ · Camphill Special School is not contented, however! Our goals of continually improving the school, and ensuring its existence

Financial management is in the hands of two entities at Camphill Special School: the Finance Committee and the community ’s Economic Group. These two bodies have worked mightily to plan strategically for any financial circum-stances, and I am proud to say that Camphill Special School is well prepared to face any challenging economic times that may lie ahead of us.

An area of high importance to us is our responsibility for the environment, and we continually look for economically feasible methods of reducing our carbon footprint. I also assure you that charitable gifts always are used carefully and efficiently for programming and services that benefit the children.

It is with regret that I announce the resignation of Eric Maskin, a long-time mem-ber of our Finance Committee. Eric’s son has left our Transition Program, having achieved placement at an adult life sharing community. We cannot thank Eric enough for his many years of service to Camp-hill Special School, and we wish him well as he devotes his energies and skills to new ventures.

We welcome Mr. Matt McKeever to the Finance Committee and look forward to his participation.

A major financial accomplishment this year was the creation of the Beaver Run Foundation, a separate 501(c)3 with its own by-laws and board of directors whose sole purpose is to support Camphill Special School and its mission.

Because our annual report goes to press before our audit, the financial information presented here is incomplete. Our audit report is available upon request.
