CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 4, Week 6, 16th November 2017
Camperdown
The recent Year 5/6 Melbourne Camp was an action-packed three days that started with the Eureka Skydeck and ended with a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance. In between, students visited Parliament House and were lucky enough to observe sittings in both houses. They enjoyed a program at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre that included waterslides and diving boards, toured the MCG, visited the Melbourne Museum and went ice-skating which was a highlight for many.
Lucky family members might have even received gifts purchased from the Queen Victoria Market. Many students experienced firsts on the camp, including the first time in Melbourne, first time on a tram, on an escalator and in a lift. All made the most of the opportunities to learn about Victoria’s capital city and have fun.
Michelle Norton, Year 5/6 Teacher
Year 5/6 students thoroughly enjoyed the many sites that Melbourne had to offer
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,

From the Principal’s Desk…
In any school, November is a significant
month with regards to student
milestones and transitions. Our Year 12
VCE students are finishing their exams
this week and it is understandable that
they are experiencing the mixed
emotions of relief, satisfaction and
uncertainty. After thirteen years of
school routines and structures, this will
be a period of celebration but also adjustment and
reflection. We will celebrate this significant milestone with
our Year 12 students and their families next Monday night,
at the much anticipated Year 12 Formal.
Meanwhile, our Prep students are enjoying the opportunity
to be role models and unofficial mentors for the
kindergarten children who will be joining us next year as
our incoming Prep students. The kindergarten children have
already had a number of whole group visits to the school,
and with enrolments now confirmed, this morning we
welcomed them back as the Camperdown College class of
2018. The strong enrolment numbers will again warrant two
classes of Prep with two teachers, and the state-wide
orientation day on Tuesday 12th December will provide a
further chance for these new students to experience the
many wonderful opportunities that come with starting
school. Our current Prep students have very capably and
proudly taken on their new responsibilities!
At the Senior Campus, student subject selections have been
completed and there is a strong sense of anticipation and
excitement as the students, with staff and family support,
plan the next steps in their learning journey. The new
Corangamite Trade Training Cluster offerings have
enriched opportunities and pathways, and we have many
more students wishing to incorporate a VETiS (Vocational
Education and Training in Schools) certificate into their
Year 10, 11 or 12 program. Some new electives in the
Year 9/10 mix and the opportunity to be part of a school
production next year have also sparked curiosity and
interest.
Our Year 6 students, having recently returned from a very
successful Year 5/6 Melbourne Camp, are doing their best
to maintain their focus on their Year 6 studies and
responsibilities while preparing for their transition to the
Senior Campus. Their leadership and role modelling at the
Junior Campus is greatly appreciated and I am confident
that they will embrace the opportunities and challenges
that lie ahead.
Regardless of the stage of schooling, we know that high
aspirations and an enthusiasm for learning will stand any
young person in good stead for the future. To this end, all
members of the school community (current students,
Alumni, Camperdown College friends and supporters) are
encouraged to contribute ideas to the AG Daws Hall sign
competition launched in this week’s newsletter. What do
we stand for here at Camperdown College, and how can
we lead the way by making a strong statement to the
community about the value of education?

Remembrance Day:
Mr Rock prepared and conducted a very moving Remembrance Service at the Senior Campus last Thursday. He
spoke about the Last Man from Dunolly who was the only male from his home town to return from war and students
then listened to the song based on this story. Mr Van spoke about the meaning of different symbols associated with
Remembrance Day and Zach McKenzie, Alanah Blake, Ellie Walsh and Katie Cecchini-Baxter also played a role in
the service.
ICAS Competitions:
Congratulations to: Tim Fagan (Distinction), Stacey James (Credit), Ian Wilkinson (Credit) and Jordan Watson
(Participation) on their ICAS Mathematics results.
Mock Job Interviews:
Congratulations to all Year 10 students who participated in Mock Job Interviews on Monday. A number of Camperdown College
alumni (past students) were part of the interviewing panels. It is pleasing to see so many of our past students willing to support our
College in a range of areas. All students dressed in their refinery and presented in a mature and well-rehearsed manner. Interviewers
were very impressed with the skill level of the students. Well done to Mrs Maskell for organising this activity and to Mr Rock for
coaching/preparing the students.
At the completion of the interviews, three ex-students, Wayne McIntyre, Sean Justin and Andrea Bell all shared their life stories since
leaving Camperdown High School with Year 7/8 students. They gave students valuable advice about following their passions and be
prepared to take up new opportunities.
Let’s Talk:
The Let’s Talk campaign which encourages people to talk about their problems and reduce the incidence of suicide was presented to
students in Year 9 – 11 last week. As you may be aware, the Fitzgibbon family is partnering with St John of God Hospital to deliver
the Let’s Talk initiative to reduce the stigma of mental health.
Let’s Talk stands for: L = learn self-care, E = express your feelings, T = tell someone, S = someone loves you, T = talk, A = ask how
you’re feeling, L = listen, K = keep talking.
The program has already been presented to about 2,500 people across the south west in a variety of locations from football and netball
clubs to schools. SJOG mental health manager John Parkinson delivered the presentation and was assisted by a strong contingency of
local people who are all passionate about breaking down the stigma associated with mental health and urging people to seek help.
Year 9 First Aid:
As part of the Duke of Edinburgh program the Year 9 students completed their first aid training last week.
School Captains:
We are currently in the position of selecting our School Captains for 2018. We have had six very strong candidates nominate for the
position. They presented speeches to the students last week and since then a student vote has been taken and interviews conducted.
The announcement of who has been selected to carry out this important role will be made next week.

2018 Prep Transition:
There were many mixed emotions in our Prep room this morning as we welcomed our 2018 Prep students and their
parents into Camperdown College. The eager kindergarten children spent the morning at school under the guidance
of Mrs Tolland and Miss Edwards whilst their parents joined Cherie and myself for morning tea and an information
meeting in the staffroom. Our final transition day for our 2018 Prep children will be held on Tuesday 12th December
from 9.30am – 2.30pm.
Year 5/6 Melbourne Camp:
What a superb three day camp experience our Year 5/6 students enjoyed recently. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed my three days
with the students. At school, we form relationships with our students however camp further strengthens teacher – student bonds. It
was wonderful to observe the two year groups strengthening their connections with each other and working together to reassure and
encourage each other, particularly as night time approached! The students were all very well behaved and they participated with
determination in all activities. They had so many wonderful opportunities that they may not otherwise get. Activities included;
Melbourne Museum, Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre, Parliament House, The Shrine of Remembrance and the Queen Victoria
Market shopping experience. There were tears of laughter, persistence galore and great resilience on display at the ice skating rink.
All students managed to make their way around the ice, even though some did spend more time on their backsides rather than their
feet, including one teacher who will remain anonymous!
Our tour guides at each venue made extremely positive comments about the engagement and interest level of our students. We thank
all the students for their great behaviour and we also thank the parents for supporting our camping program at the College. Without
this ongoing support, wonderful experiences such as this would not be possible. Although very tired, I know all staff had a fantastic
time away with the students, which was clearly evident as they sat in the staff room, sharing stories from the week with other staff
members. Many thanks must go to Michelle Norton and Claire Tucker for their thorough organisation of the camp. Also thanks to Bill
McGann and Ryan Smith who also attended.
Remembrance Day:
Our Junior Campus School Captains, Evie Clementson and Bailey McGillivray attended the
Camperdown RSL service on Saturday, at the War Memorial to join the community commemorations
and lay a wreath in tribute to fallen military personnel on behalf of our College. At our assembly on
Friday students listened to a reading about the significance of the day and observed a minute’s silence.
Extra Curricula Activities:
With the end of the year quickly approaching, students will be involved in a variety of extra curriculum activities. Letters and
permission forms were sent home last week to all Junior Campus students regarding our end of year excursion to AquaZone in
Warrnambool. This has generated much excitement throughout the school and is something that we can all look forward to as a
celebration of 2017. Arrangements have been finalised for our Prep – Year 2 excursion to the Otway Fly. Following the excursion,
students will return to school at the end of the day for a Night In and our Year 2 Sleepover. In week 9, our Prep – Year 2 Swimming
program will commence on Monday 4th December, at the Splash Factory at the Farm in Kolora. During PE sessions, our Year 3 – 6
students are learning new skills from the bike education program. Keep an eye out for one last permission form for the year as Prep –
Year 6 students will be seeing Rock Dog at the Theatre Royal on Monday 18th December at 1.30pm. This end of year film will cost
students $5 each. Whilst the year is drawing to a close, there is still so much learning to be done. It is important at this time of the year
that students remain focused on their learning. A reminder that regular feedback on student progress is available through Compass.
Year 6 Graduation:
The planning for the Year 6 Graduation is well underway, with the date set for Monday 18th December. A light meal will be shared
betweeb students and teachers at 6pm, with the ceremony commencing at 7pm in the AG Daws Hall. All members of the
Camperdown College community are welcome to attend the ceremony.

Music Count Us In Celebration Day Last Thursday, our Junior Band performed for our Music Count Us In Celebration Day. They
accompanied the Camperdown College Prep – Year 4 students at 12.30pm when they sang the
2017 MCUI song Shine Together at the same time as 650,000 other students from around
Australia. Over 3,000 schools around Australia were involved in the federally funded program,
now in its eleventh year, which promotes music in schools.
The song was written in April by three students who won the 2017 MCUI song writing
competition. Students watched the event live streamed from Federation Square in Melbourne
and then took part in the national countdown to play and sing the song at 12.30pm.
This term our Junior Band have been learning their parts, which were part of the resources
provided by Music Count Us In, and have enjoyed playing along with the backing track.
In a regional area it's really important for our instrumental music students’ musical development
to have lots of opportunities to play with music students from other schools. The Music Count
Us In Program does this and is a great celebration of music in our region.
Fiona Pugh, Instrumental Music Teacher
AG Daws Hall Sign Competition The space along the rear of the AG Daws Hall is highly visible to passing traffic. School Council intends to install a horizontal sign
13m long x 1m high on this wall, making a statement about the power of education.
Entries are invited between now and Monday 4th December and can be submitted in person to either campus office or by email to
[email protected] (titled Sign Competition). What wise words of your own, or inspirational quote, would you like to see on this sign? What do we stand for here at Camperdown College, and how can we lead the way by making a strong statement to the community about
the value of education?

Science Group Zootopia have been studying Forensics and last
Friday Senior Constable Shannon Kavanagh from
Warrnambool Police Forensic Division made a special visit.
She explained her role in solving crime using forensics and
then had students assist her to solved a mock murder that was
set up in the Science Lab. Fingerprint analysis, CCTV footage,
sampling of blood (fake) and footprint analysis were some of
the techniques used to solve this crime. After further
investigation, Stacey James was the prime suspect and was
arrested.
Students enjoyed being detectives and used skills they had learnt
from Zootopia to solve this crime. The crime was a simulated theft
of a laptop resulting in the shooting of a staff member all caught
on CCTV footage.

On Monday 13th November, Camperdown College welcomed their first Alumni Careers
Session. We saw six former students come back and partake in mock job interviews for Year
10 students. Three of these students stayed on after recess and spoke to our Year 7/8 students
about their career paths and life at and beyond school.
This session was so interesting and the feedback we got from students was great. The strongest
messages that the students walked away with were around the personal advice that each alum
gave. We would love to have more of these sessions, so if you’re interested in sharing your
story, please get in contact!
If you’re reading this and you’re a former student of Camperdown College please get in touch
with us by sending an email to [email protected] or connecting with us on

Ruby Walsh: Creak, creak, the cobwebbed door slowly opened. No one would ever know what was behind that
wicked, grey, broken-handled door. Often I would walk past the door on my way to the school bus
and get a whiff of a horrible smell like a person who had not had a shower in the last ten years.
Jesse Parsons: As the door swung open, a red wooden toy car came flying through the doorway.
“Yeah!...Woohoo!” Randy screamed as his younger brother hung on for dear life on the back, and his older sister clung onto the
front of the toy car like a deer on the front of the hood.
Ally Collins: I bounced out of bed, ready for a new day. I felt like I could become a bungee jumper in my dreams. Anyway, I
got dressed, and then… The door swung open, I turned around and there they were: big, green things. Zombies!
They were getting closer. If you know what zombies are, you will know what they like to eat: they eat what we
humans call our brains, but what they call a juicy treat.
Lewani Bateman: The rustic door opened with a creak. As it opened, a warm light flooded the damp, decaying room, lighting a bony
figure. He made no effort to rush out the door due to fatigue and hunger. The room he was in was filled with a
horrible stench, mould and grime spread across the walls. A clogged toilet occupied a corner, never used.
The man sat on a metallic bunk with moth-eaten covers and no pillow. This was no place for comfort. From
the door, the whimpering man emerged from the light. In his trembling arms, a platter of stale bread and cool
water from the river. The guard looked at the tattered garments on the bony figure with distrust and fear.
