CAMPBELLTOWN JOGGERS NEWS ISSUE: SEPTEMBER 2018 CAMPBELLTOWN JOGGERS PAGE 1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT UPCOMING… With only 2 handicap events to go, the Club Championship is heating up and this weekend there are vital points available for the taking!! It’s great to see another tight competition this year, and this is a credit to our handicappers who must be getting it right – despite all our mumbles and grumbles! Of course, September was another busy month with many members running in various events. Congratulations to our GNW Miler Runners who took on the challenging course and made it out alive. Congratulations also to their pacers, not an easy task, still running 70-something kilometres and copping a “little” abuse along the way (or that’s what I hear). Last weekend was Blackmore’s Running Festival. Once you get over the crazy early start, it is a fantastic day. A run around our spectacular city – over the iconic Harbour Bridge and finishing at the Opera House. My favourite part of the day isn’t so much the run (that’s tough) but hanging around to cheer on all the other CJC runners. It is nothing but inspiring watching your running buddies smashing their goals and it really makes you grateful to be part of such an awesome running club. Whilst we are heading to the final months of the year, we still have plenty more to come! Come and join us for the Chicken Run next weekend. It is a fun event for all our members – runners, walkers, juniors (accompanied by an adult). It’s the long weekend so you can do your long run on the Monday! We’ll have prizes available, and of course our special trophy. If he hasn’t already spoken to you, Ted will be approaching you with his green clipboard to confirm your attendance at the Fisher’s Ghost Fun Run. We ask all members to help out on the Saturday Set-Up or Sunday Race Day. (Saturday 10 th and Sunday 11 th November). Presentation Night will be here soon. Make sure you’ve saved the date – Saturday 24 November! At our new venue at Gledswood. Tania will have more information soon! Last month Peter Hickey moved to Bathurst. Pete is one of our longest serving members, of our active members he is right up there in the top 5 with total handicap runs – 135 - it is not often he misses a Handicap. He is also a regular at the track and enjoys the Eliminator. In the past Peter has served on the Committee and happily volunteered to be attacked by a magpie for some newspaper coverage. We wish Peter, Louise and the kids all the very best in their new venture but hope to see Pete back for a run or two every now and again!

GNW 100 MILE EVENT

On the weekend of 8th and 9th September, Rochelle Tregear and Stephen Bowers completed the Great North Walk 100 Mile event. The course is primarily on foot tracks and fire-trails, and includes some minor back roads. There is more than 6,200 metres of ascent (and descent) in the 100 Mile event. I had a few questions for them once they’d recovered… Q1: What was the actual distance that you completed and how long did it take? RT: 175km, finished in 30 hours and 22 minutes. SB: Haha, we both finished the 175km. I never took any detours so bonus distance for me! The 15km on top of the standard miler are free of charge… Q2: Wow! Those numbers are seriously impressive! Is this the first time you’ve completed a ‘Miler’? RT: Yes, it was my first Miler. SB: No. I have completed this event three times, plus two other races of 100 miles and more. Q3: What motivated you to do such a demanding event? RT: I had completed a couple of 100km races and I wanted a new challenge that on paper would seem unrealistic but through determination and persistence could be achieved. Plus, I also wanted to show my kids that if you set a goal, have a positive can-do attitude and work really hard, what appears impossible can be achieved. SB: Thinking you can do better than previous years. The high points of the race stick in the memory, the low points fade really quickly. The camaraderie of the fellow competitors and the race organisers is amazing. Q4: Obviously, you would have trained for this over a long period of time. What is the one aspect of your training that you consider to be the most important when preparing for an event of this distance? RT: Time on your feet is really important. With a race like this you are on your feet for a long period time. I would have to say I enjoyed my long run on the weekend as it was time spent in our beautiful bushlands with some amazing trails and even though these long runs were often 4-5 hours they went quite quickly. SB: Train you mind to not give up. This will get you to the finish. Getting to finish quicker is more about training the body including testing nutrition and getting physically strong enough to reduce the suffering. Being physically stronger also improves the recovery. Q5: In reflection, what would you consider to be the highlight of the event (other than finishing of course)? RT: The friendships gained, the wonderful volunteers who were always cheerful and supportive when you came into a checkpoint. The magnificent waratahs on the last stretch to Patonga Beach and the breathtaking views of Patonga Beach before you descend the mountain to the finish line. I would have to say though, a memory from this race that will always be etched in my brain, is seeing a fellow runner have a ciggie break mid race and then to take off up the hill as if it gave him super human powers. Although, later on I did find out that he had pulled out of the race, so obviously the cigarette didn’t have special powers. SB: Knowing that I overcame the stresses that an event like this places. I pushed through the low patches. Q6: Which aspect of the event was the most challenging? RT: For me was the sleep monsters! I really struggled with that and it hit me hard for the last 20kms and let’s just say I was a little mental.

SB: The last 25km for me. My feet were completely trashed and the terrain very technical. I came into Mooney ready to slam the last stage and it became a bit of a painful death march. Q7: Other than the obvious; clothing, shoes, food and water, what is the piece of kit or equipment that you simply could not do without? RT: For this event my hiking poles. From checkpoint 2 to 3 is quite a gnarly, steep hill climbing section and made it so much easier and for the last section it was like an extra pair of legs. SB: Good lighting. Mine let me down on the day. Q8: The distance and time on your feet is incomprehensible to most people. What do you do to occupy your mind and remain positive and mentally strong? RT: To be honest for these types of races I don’t notice the time, even though you are out there forever. For the first 100km I never had any negative patches, just chatted with people and enjoyed the location that I was in. As I became tired during the night I forgot all about my mantras I usually say in my head to stay strong which was a big mistake. The next day with 20km to go I turned into a potty-mouthed woman, with bad attempts at making up silly rhymes. SB: I train my mind before to visualise the finish and then break the whole race down into manageable chunks. The total distance is too mind boggling. The drive between Mooney Mooney and Lake Macquarie on the way up on Friday seemed to go on forever and that was probably only half of what we were going to run the next day! Q9: You would see a lot, and learn a lot, as you complete this event. What is the one most surprising sight or experience you had along the way that has had a lasting impression on you? RT: Seeing people out there who are hurting and tired just like you and are getting the job done. When you see them run along the beach to kiss the GNW post, you feel so happy and proud that they made it too. SB: There was a really scary Handmaid’s scarecrow coming out of the bush before Yarramalong. I was running on my backup candle and it scared the crap out of me. Luckily, I was with another competitor at the time who had an Ayup and we calmed each other down. It was even worse than last year when in a similar spot we came upon large black cows which were almost invisible in the dark. Q10: If any other club members are thinking about doing an event like this, what would you consider to be vital advice for them? RT: Make sure you actually commit to the training and not just talk about it. You could possibly get away with minimal training for 100km but a Miler is whole different kettle of fish. SB: 1. Start by running on trails more. 2. Go to events and see competitors and take in the experience. 3. Experience the event as support crew. 4. Volunteer at events. 5. Trawl on-line on social media for information. 6. Ask others what gear they use. 7. Learn to $#it in the woods. Any other comments? RT: A big shout out to Callum Zachan. I cannot thank Callum enough for his help, not only in the race but in training. He is quite humble, but I truly would not have racked up those 100km weeks leading in to the race without him and he made sure I kept moving on those last 71km to the finish.

SB: I got to the end of the race and arrived home and broke down to Kylie and said I am never doing that race again. This year I never really had goals and went into the race just to do better. I had already completed my sub 30hrs goal last year and this year I had nothing else but to finish well as my goal. The pain and suffering this year seemed to be more than in others, even though I felt fit and ready. I now look back on the race and feel really satisfied to finish it. With 100 milers, that should always be the first goal and I have to be happy with that as so much can go wrong. This year I had a few gear failures and I learnt more than ever as I was also trying new things with diet, effort and fuelling. I had no vomiting as a consequence, but I still went through a lot of nausea. Suffice to say, I now know that I want to do it again, next year…
