They were from one of the Arab countries, their mother tough them the rightChristian faith after their father passed

away. They studied medicine and treatedthe sick and poor for free. When Diocletianrenounced the faith and ordered theworship of idols, he was told that Cosmanand Damian were preaching in the Nameof Christ and urging others not to worshipidols. He asked them to worship the idolsand when they refused he tortured themand their brothers and mother. After thegovernor became weary of torturing them

he ordered their heads to be cut off. Theythen received the crown of life in thekingdom of heaven.

    SaintVerena

She was brought up in the 3rd century in Upper Egypt in anoble Christian family, who handed her over to BishopSherimon, Bishop of Beni Suef, who in turn taught her andbaptized her as a Christian. As she grew up she went andlived in a cave in the desert. As a hermit, Verena fasted andprayed continuously. Saint Verena was particularly

concerned over young girls and used to look after themspiritually and physically, due to her expertise as a nurse. As aresult of her fame, the local governor arrested her and senther to jail, where Saint Maurice appeared to her to consoleand strengthen her. She was released from jail, andcontinued to perform miracles. Due to her, many convertedto Christianity. Saint Verena was interested in serving thepoor and used to offer them food. Moreover, she enjoyedserving the sick, especially those suffering from leprosy. Sheused to wash their wounds and put ointments on them, notfearing infection.

He was martyred, by the hand of Emperor Nero. Hisbody was placed in a sack and cast it in the sea. By God's will, the waves of the sea brought it to an island. A believer foundit, took it and buried it with great honour. Saint Luke wrotethe Gospel bearing his name and the "Acts of the Apostles"

    SULTATION

The Word of God, through the Holy Bible, nourishes our soul, gives us

guidance and helps maintain a healthy Christian life.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,

for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16)

The purpose of the Bible is to invite us into a complete life in God. As Christians we

recognise the sacred nature of the Holy Bible, through our faith. This is what gives usthe ability to stay strong and healthy in our spiritual life.

You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may

keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

    (Deuteronomy 4:2)

The Holy Scriptures are not just commandments, but divine promises that empower us.

The Bible is not only for us to study, but to experience, to live and to worship by it.

My soul clings to the dust; Revive me according to Your word. (Psalm 119:25)

The Word of God revives us when we are being choked by sin.

Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

    (Proverbs 30:5)

The Holy Scripture will protect your soul from any harm. Put your trust in God and you

    will be shielded from impurities.

For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,' says the Lord(Jeremiah 30:17)

God wants us to always be of good health. When we are wounded through sin He will

heal us and restore our soul back to purity.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in

the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (John 15:4)

The Bible connects us with Him, Who carried us into the arms of the Father. It saves us

from our human nature, and sanctifies and renews us with His Holy Spirit and by His

    Blood on the cross.

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding

    (Proverbs 3:13)

Read the bible with compassion and modesty, because God resists the proud but

    gives understanding to the humble.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good."

    (Ecclesiastes 9:18)

Get a notebook and summarise what you read, your thoughts, the verses you like, and

don't forget to memorise at least one verse every day, to keep for yourself a treasure or

weapon that may save you in times of trouble.continued on page 8...

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

It is your own personal book, so study it in light of your own life and your relationship

with God. Whatever is found in it, whether it is promises, or commandments are for you.

Underline verses that contain promises so you can concentrate on them in prayers.

Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to thebones.(Proverbs 16:24)

Through the bibles teachings, you can enjoy the personal love of God and feel that it is

your own private book, sent to you personally from God, as a living member in the holy

After this there was a feast of the

Jews, and Jesus went up to

    Jerusalem. Now there is in

Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a

pool, which is called in Hebrew,Bethesda, having five porches. In

these lay a great multitude of sick

    people, blind, lame, paralysed,

waiting for the moving of the

water. For an angel went down at a

certain time into the pool and

stirred up the water; then whoever

stepped in first, after the stirring ofthe water, was made well of

whatever disease he had. Now a

certain man was there who had an

    infirmity thirty-eight years. When

Jesus saw him lying there, and

knew that he already had been in

that condition a long time, He said

to him, "Do you want to be madewell?" The sick man answered Him,

"Sir, I have no man to put me into

the pool when the water is stirred

up; but while I am coming, another

steps down before me." Jesus said

to him, "Rise, take up your bed and

    walk." And immediately the man

was made well, took up his bed,and walked. And that day was the

    Sabbath. The Jews therefore said

to him who was cured, "It is the

Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to

    carry your bed." He answered

them, "He who made me well said

to me, 'Take up your bed and

walk.'" Then they asked him, "Whois the Man who said to you, 'Take

up your bed and walk'?" But the

one who was healed did not know

who it was, for Jesus had

    withdrawn, a multitude being in

    that place. Afterward Jesus found

him in the temple, and said to him,

"See, you have been made well. Sinno more, lest a worse thing come

    upon you."

Food for Thought The early church fathers have researched the use of numbers in the Bible. We have all

grown up knowing some numbers are considered holy or perfect numbers. For example: 3

    represents the Trinity.

But did you know that the number 2 represents love? Why?To love, you need someone to love. Hence a loving relationship must involve

2 people. Also 40 is considered a complete number as it is 10 X 4 10 represents the world

and 4 is the Gospels (Word of God) which made its way to all corners of the world.

So the paralytic man was sick for 38 years which is 40 less 2.

The early church fathers tell us that God was trying to show that the only thing stopping

the man from having a complete or happy life (40) was that he had no love (2) in his life.

God is telling us that without love we become paralysed spiritually, emotionally, socially,

intellectually and even physically. We stop functioning as normal human beings.

Remember that GOD IS LOVE. We are created in the Image and Likeness of God so weMUST be love as well. Hence if we cease to have love in our lives we cease to function as we

    were designed.

You will notice that when Christ healed the man, He didnt just say Rise and stopped. He

actually gave the man some instructions:

    A) Carry your bed.

The bed represents those who have taken care of us the bed carried him for 38 years.

Now it was his time to carry the bed. We must also carry those who helped us through ourlives when the time comes.

    B) And Walk

Walking here represents taking action. Simply put GET UP AND SERVE!!!

Discussion Questions1. Consider the scene that Christ came upon at the Pool. Sick and desperate peoplewaiting for the movement of the water in the hope they will be the first in after the

water is agitated. In among these is a man who has been there 38 long years

completely abandoned by everyone with very little chance of being first in but

amazingly, he still had hope and stuck it out.

Discuss the importance of the attitude we have when we are faced with problems in our

lives. Does our attitude have any bearing on our ability to come to a solution?

    2. Christ did something very strange He actually asked the man Do you want to

be made well? Discuss the following:

a)Christ never asks a silly question so this leads us to understand there are people who are

sick and dont want to be healed. Why is this? What reasons would make a person favour

their illness over being made well?

    3. In order to be healed, this man was asked to do the impossible. How would you

to RISE and WALK? Would you have obeyed?

    OPINION

The body is a slave, the soul a sovereign, and therefore it is due to Divine mercy whenthe body is worn out by illness: for thereby the passions are weakened, and a mancomes to himself; indeed, bodily illness itself is sometimes caused by the passions.

The soul that is given over to the will of God fears nothing; neither thunder nor thievesnor any such thing. Whatever may come, 'Such is God's pleasure,' she says. If she falls

sick she thinks, 'This means that I need sickness, or God would not have sent it.'

Biblical Case Studies1. Miriam - aspunishmentAnd when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam

became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and thereshe was, a leper. So Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sinon us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. (Num 12:10-11)

Yes sometimes we can become sick as a punishment for sin. Miriam got leprosybecause she spoke badly about Moses the Prophet.

2.Job tostrengthen our belief in Gods goodnessBut now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curseYou to Your face!" And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in yourpower; only do not lay a hand on his person." So Satan went out from thepresence of the Lord. (Job 1:11-12)

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground andworshiped. And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shallI return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the nameof the Lord." In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong. (Job 1:21-22)

Our relationship with God will be at its strongest when we can thank Him andworship Him even in the middle of what appears to be an unfair illness. Job was

the greatest example of this in fact he thought that as our Creator, God hadevery right to do whatever He wanted if that meant allowing us to fall ill then

it's His right as God. This is the highest form of trust in God.

    3. Simons mother-in-law & many others just because! Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife'smother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately shearose and served them. When the sun was setting, all those who had any thatwere sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands onevery one of them and healed them. (Luke 4:38-40)

  • 8/14/2019 Camp Booklet 2008

    16/28

    16

There are times when we get sick just because!! Since the fall of Adam and Eve,sin entered the human body and as a result so did weakness for all generations

thereafter. Hence exposure to bacteria and virus' makes us sick. It's a fact!!!

    4. Man born blind to show the Glory of GodNow as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciplesasked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was bornblind?" Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that theworks of God should be revealed in him. (John 9: 1-3)

One of the best ways that God reveals His glory is by working through us thistakes many forms. It could be through miracles, through outstanding talent oras in the case of the man born blind through illness. He was blind only so that

the works of God could be revealed through him. WOW!!! You are truly blessedwhen God chooses you to reveal His work and glory.

    5. Paul to stop fall of prideAnd lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations,a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I beexalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three timesthat it might depart from me. And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you,

for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will ratherboast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore Itake pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

St Paul had been allowed to have special visions from our Lord Jesus Christ.Obviously this kind of blessing can easily turn into pride and a big head. HenceSt Paul himself says so that he doesn't become full of himself, an illness was

given to him to keep him grounded. Sometimes it is a blessing to receive such an

illness rather than suffer from pride.

    6. Woman with blood flow as a test of faithNow a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had sufferedmany things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was nobetter, but rather grew worse. And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has madeyou well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction." (Mark 5:25-26, 34)

The only way we know if we have faith or courage or strength etc is if we are putin situations to test it. It is the only way to really get to know ourselves. Christcommended this woman because she endured much and didn't give up hope

in fact her faith only became stronger and more determined hoping we all

Food for Thought While a wound is still new and warm, it is easy to heal. Old

wounds, carelessly left to fester are not easily healed, but

require much effort The later the repentance, the more

    arduous it becomes.

It is not good for all our wishes to be filled; through sickness

we recognize the value of health; through evil, the value of

good; through hunger, the value of food; through exertion, the

    value of rest.

Falling ill is not something that happens to us, it is a choice we

make as a result of things happening to us

A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of

human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive

    benefit from his illnesses.

shall arise With healing in His wings.

Matthew 9:35- Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teach-

ing in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing

every sickness and every disease among the people.

Luke 6:19 - And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power

went out from Him and healed them all.

James 5:14-16- Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of

the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the

name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord

will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess

your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be

healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

    FINALDIAGNOSIS

    When God Heals

When God comes to heal us

    It's final and complete

There is nothing that is lackingWhen He meets us in our need

Whether it be in our body

Or the hurt within our soul

He will touch the point of need

And will truly make us whole

His healing is there for you

Just receive it from the Lord

    Believe upon the living word

    That you can be restored

    Wherever there is weakness

He is the strength we need

And He will gently lead us throughAnd heal the heart that bleeds

    Jesus came to restore us

    To fullness in our God

But Satan has come to devour

And to kill, destroy and rob

    But Jesus won the victory

So we need not be afraid

But claim the victory that is ours

    And no longer live enslaved

We need to rise up in our faith

And not depend on how we feel

Keep on praying and standing firmFor our God surely heals

Healed & WholeOne day I dug a little hole

    And put my hurt inside

I thought that I could just forget

I'd put it there to hide.

But that little hurt began to grow

    I covered it every day

I couldn't leave it and go on

It seemed the price I had to pay.

My joy was gone, my heart was sad

    Pain was all I knew.

My wounded soul enveloped meLoving seemed too hard to do.

One day, while standing by my hole

    I cried to God above

And said, "If You are really there --

They say, You're a God of Love!"

And just like that -- He was right there

And just put His arms around me

He wiped my tears, His hurting childThere was no safer place to be.

I told Him all about my hurt

    I opened up my heart

He listened to each and every word

    To every sordid part.

I dug down deep and got my hurt

I brushed the dirt awayAnd placed it in the Master's hand

    And healing came that day.

He took the blackness of my soul

    And set my spirit FREE!

    Something beautiful began to grow

Where the hurt used to be.

And when I look at what has grownOut of my tears and pain

I remember every day to give my hurts to Him

    And never bury them again.
