The Camino Program is a year-long program based on the Rite Journey Program, which assists and guides the transition of the Year 9 students from childhood into adulthood. The sunrise ceremony is held for parents to give permission for their children to embark on the Camino Program. All the Year 9 students wrote and read a letter of gratitude to their parents, thanking them for all that they have done for them in their childhood. This symbolic and emotional gesture was the first step of the Camino journey. The Camino Program will culminate later in the year with the much-anticipated Camino Camp, when all Year 9 students will be challenged physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Camino Calling Ceremony

On Thursday 4th March, our Year 9 students and their parents and families attended the launch of the 2021 Camino Program with the ‘Calling’ and ‘Departure’ ceremonies in the Paul Rafter Centre.

The Camino Program is the flagship program in the Year 9 curriculum, and we look forward to seeing and sharing our students’ growth throughout the year.

Student Bravery Award Cerys Chiappa 10MB, has been a member of Quinn’s Mindarie Surf Club since 2015 and is now a bronze medallion patrol member. On 9th January, Cerys volunteered for an additional surf lifesaving duty and took part in an early morning Abalone patrol. She was stationed on a rocky beach in between Mindarie and Quinn’s Rocks. Cerys assisted her colleague in the first tube rescue involving a man who, in his panic, was pulling both girls under. Later both ladies saved a couple who were out of their depth, pulling each other under and panicking. Both ladies performed tube rescues which requires skill, a calm disposition and bravery. Cerys and her colleague also only 15 years old, played a vital role in saving the lives of three people. Later in the day it was revealed that two Abalone fishers lost their lives that same morning. Cerys’s maturity, dedication and bravery has been acknowledged by Wanneroo City Council and she was presented with an Award at the surf club morning meeting on 14th February by Mayor Tracey Roberts. Year 8 Extension Science - Solar Car Challenge Throughout Term 1, Year 8 Course 3 and Extension students, have been proactively engaged in designing and testing the optimum specifications for a model solar car. This week, the Extension students made full use of the late summer sun in order to confirm which group had developed the fastest car.

Eight teams competed for the honour of representing our class against the top students in the Course 3 classes, with the Grand Final scheduled for next week. The victorious car, “Blueberry Delivery” certainly delivered the goods, winning the best of five final, which literally went down to the wire. The ultimate winners will represent our College against other schools in the Northern Finals of the Solar Car Challenge, held on 16th March. Mr Tony Summers Science Teacher

Soccer Academy Camp

During Week 4 the Year 8 & 9 Soccer Academy class took a trip down to Busselton. Students engaged in a range of activities, looking to improve their team connection and performance. We travelled down to Margaret River to play the local Football West development squad, where our Year 8 boys and 8/9 girls played a mixed game. Many of the students were playing together for the first time and it was great way for students to start

their journey as a team together. We were very grateful for the opportunity that allowed students to start to get to know one another on the field in a less competitive environment. The following day students were treated like professional athletes, waking up and eating breakfast, a training session, beach recovery and lunch together as a team. We hope students gained an insight to how elite teams operate. The evening was for the opportunity of the boys to play, going up against the South West Phoenix team in Bunbury. The boys have spent time developing their shape, structure and teamwork and the results are starting to show. Over the last few years, we have been lucky enough to play against the South West Phoenix teams and we are grateful for their hospitality. Over the course of the few days, we were also able to spend time with students looking at their involvement in Soccer, what they want to achieve and how we can work together to get there. Students have shown a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment to the program both Mr Carbone and I are very much looking forward to the upcoming CAS competition. Focus of the Week As we reach the midpoint of Term One there are some issues with students’ personal appearance and organisation that had been brought to my attention. Consequently, I will be working with all staff to implement a ‘Focus of the Week’. Your child’s Assistant Deputy Principal will inform you and them of what the focus will be for the upcoming week. Any students in breach of the focus, will be issued a lunch detention on that day. This initiative will begin at the start of next week, Monday 8th March. I appreciate your support in addressing these issues.

Parent Group AGM The College Parent Group will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 16 th March at 4.00pm in the College Boardroom. External Coach Demands

Whilst this certainly isn’t a new problem, we have recently begun to deal with the issue of junior sport coaches “advising” or requesting that students miss physical education classes and/or CAS sporting commitments because of the risk of injury. If coaches suffer from a lack of perspective and feel it’s ok to place these types of ultimatums on students, we ask parents to resist supporting and encouraging such demands. It serves only to place the student in an awkward situation, it impacts other members of their CAS team, and it sends the wrong message. Elite junior athletes have always been able to balance performing in their talent pathways with supporting their school. There are plenty of examples. If your child’s coach is delusional, and they overestimate their position in the sporting world, then please be the voice of reason when required. Mr Ben Dyer Head of Sport

Irene’s Wellbeing What is the key to feeling good about school? By Linda Stade, Education Writer https://lindastade.com/

Research tells us that students who feel connected to school, regardless of how they are faring academically, are less likely to participate in behaviours that will harm themselves or others, for example, substance abuse, bullying, or violence. They are also less likely to experience emotional distress or suicidal thoughts. It pays to be connected! How can we help build connectedness from home? It isn’t all up to schools. Relationships run both ways and students and their families contribute to the dynamic that generates the warm buzz of connectedness. Here are three ways you can help build your child’s connection to school. 1. Support your child’s relationship with school If we want our kids to engage with school and foster a sense of belonging, they must first value their school and education. A child’s attitude to school is often a reflection of their parents’ attitudes. Speak positively about school and teachers. If there is a problem, work with the school instead of against it. 2. Encourage co-curricular participation Co-curricular activities give your child an opportunity to interact with students of different age groups who have the same interests as them. It allows them to build wide social networks. They also get the opportunity to show different facets of their personality and see other students and teachers in a new light. 3. Teach relationship skills We cannot assume that our children have the social and emotional skills required to make and maintain relationships. They need you to teach and model those skills. Then they need you as a coach on the sidelines. If necessary, work with the school to develop strategies and encourage your child to access the people in place to support them. If you feel you need further support to increase your child’s connection to the College Community, please contact your child’s Care Group Teacher, Assistant Deputy Principal or myself.
