breakthrough
The next breakthroughs in mental health will come from CAMH, Canada’s leading hospital for mental health.
Society is only at the early stages of understanding,
treating and preventing the devastating impacts of
mental illness and addiction. But there is enormous
potential. At the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health,
we are on the cusp of being able to change not just
one life, but millions around the world. And we are
the place that will do it. We must create the facilities,
invest in the research and educate the people
who will make it happen.
03
CAMH is launching the $200 million Breakthrough Campaign to transform mental health care in Canada and around the world. The Campaign will allow us to:
1 Help more people recover, faster
2 Inspire hope through discovery
3 Stop mental illness from destroying lives
We have the scope, the leadership
and the will to make it happen.
Now we need you. Join our team
and help make the breakthroughs
necessary to change life for
patients now and in the future.

a worldwide crisis
The statistics tell a tragic story. And the effect is both societal and personal.
One in five Canadians – more than 7 million
people – will experience mental illness in their
lifetime. The problem is not only wide but deep.
It can bring pain and loneliness. Prejudice and
fear of discrimination still prevent many people
from seeking help. And the effects of one person’s
illness can be catastrophic to families and friends.
05
70% of mental health problems and illnesses have their onset during childhood or adolescence
Mental illness is the #2 cause of disability and premature death in Canada
500,000 number of Canadians unable to work in any given week because of mental illness
$51 billion estimated cost per year of mental illness to the Canadian economy
“ The mind is our last frontier. Unlike a physical ailment, mental illnesses are often difficult to see or understand, making it easy to turn away in ignorance. This is why research and education are so important.” G. Raymond Chang, Breakthrough Campaign Cabinet and visionary donor

CAMH is one of the largest hospitals
in North America for people with mental
illness. We are an acknowledged world
leader in brain science. Each year, we
provide exceptional care for more than
28,000 patients and respond to 500,000
outpatient visits. We inspire change
in the mental health field through the
professionals we train, the knowledge
we share, and in the modern facilities
we are building: embedded in the

community and open to the world.
We are inspired by the courage of
our patients, the dedication of our staff
and by the example of our volunteers
and donors, who have thrust mental
health onto society’s agenda.
With your help, CAMH will drive the
progress essential to changing mental
health – for everyone. Because there
is no health without mental health.

CAMH has led innovation in mental health care, research and education for decades. We have built a teaching and research hospital that serves and learns from one of the most diverse populations in the world.
Our clinicians treat patients in CAMH’s hospital setting and beyond – in community clinics, in group homes, on the street, in court, in remote communities and through the web and mobile technology.
We will help more people recover, faster
$80M
09
But we have a long way to go. Consider this: of the people who seek treatment in their community, only one third will get the help they need. We must do better.
We know we have the capability, the
people and the approach to help more
people. Now we need the facilities to do it.
With your support, we will provide access for
more people who need us. We will continue
our journey to transform our inpatient and
outpatient spaces into recovery-based
environments, places of healing and a hub
for training and research. And we will deepen
our expertise and widen our reach in helping
special populations, such as young people
and older people with mental illness.
10
To help more people recover, faster, the Breakthrough Campaign will support:
Continuing our campus transformation with two new facilities that promote recoveryWe have already started to build and renew a
vibrant campus that is at once a modern hospital
and an urban village. However, many CAMH patients,
including many with the most complex illnesses,
continue to receive care in our old buildings –
cramped, confining places where no one would
want their loved ones to be. We must replace these
outdated spaces and replicate the environment of our
new buildings: flexible, light-filled, inviting spaces that
promote confidence, recovery and community. We will
also expand outpatient and partial-hospitalization areas,
allowing for better care for patients at all stages of their
illness. The new buildings will not only further our ability
to offer best-in-class care for patients, but will be the
exemplars of CAMH’s visible place in the community.
Improving emergency access and careThe emergency department is the first place
many people in distress go to seek help.
CAMH has the only 24/7 emergency department
dedicated to mental health in Ontario. Today,
it serves 7,000 per year – making it one of the
busiest psychiatric emergency departments in the
country – and that number is expected to grow
substantially. We must improve existing space
and build a new emergency department on our
Queen Street campus. This will allow us to double
urgent care space, improve patient transitions to
appropriate care, handle specialized assessment,
and provide care for the most vulnerable patients,
such as youth and young adults.
Identifying mental illness earlier, and making a significant difference across the life spanThe earlier we can identify mental illness and intervene, the better the chance of recovery. Treating mental
illness early improves a person’s ability to complete their education, form positive relationships and secure
employment. We must provide not only age- and condition-appropriate care, but make transitions through
the recovery journey as smooth as possible. We will interweave research, specialized care, programs aimed
at specific age groups, and collaborations with health-care partners to help people at all ages and stages.
11
50% people with serious mental illness comprise up to 50% of Canada’s homeless
+50% CAMH Emergency serves 7,000 people per year; patient visits have increased by nearly 50% in four years
By 2020, depression will be the leading cause of disability around the world
60% increase in unique patients at CAMH projected in next two decades
“ I believe the physical transformation taking place here is of critical importance. The transformation is not only providing clients with better facilities and care, but is smashing stigma with every brick that falls from the old, and each brick that is laid for the new.” Angela Foot, who has received CAMH care as an emergency patient, inpatient, and outpatient
12
We will inspire hopethrough discovery
$70M
Where will the breakthroughs come in unravelling the complexities of the brain? How quickly can we translate those discoveries into better diagnostics and treatments? What can we do to prevent mental illness before it starts? These urgent questions preoccupy us at CAMH.
13
Fortunately, we thrive on complexity.
Our research is interwoven with our clinical
care. Our work spans brain science, clinical and
community-based research, knowledge transfer
and commercialization – all aimed at improving
lives. And we share knowledge, using it as a
springboard for advances in care, education
and programs at CAMH and around the world.
With your support, we will drive the
discoveries with the deepest impact.
We will take what we learn and embed it
as quickly as possible into treatments and
care. And we will share our knowledge not
only with health-care professionals, but with
patients and their families as well, equipping
them to be partners in recovery.
14
To inspire hope through discovery, the Breakthrough Campaign will invest in:
Advancing the frontiers of brain science at the Campbell Family Mental Health Research InstituteThis dedicated research institute – the first
in Canada where researchers are solely
committed to understanding what causes
mental illness and how best to prevent
and treat it – was made possible thanks
to an outstanding early commitment to
the Breakthrough Campaign. It is already
spurring important discoveries, leveraging
significant peer-reviewed grants and
attracting the brightest minds from around
the world. As the hub of our neuroscience
research, the institute is poised to make
substantial breakthroughs that will impact
generations to come.
Making exponential progress in critical research areasWe must capitalize on the research areas where
we are already leaders, and where we have the
biggest potential to change the trajectory of
mental health, including:
• Brain imaging, which is opening new avenues
for understanding illness, diagnosing earlier and
measuring the effectiveness of specific treatments;
• Pioneering new tools in molecular science,
bioinformatics and genetics to unlock the root
causes of mental illness, to figure out why certain
people are more susceptible, and to uncover the
associations between genes and illnesses;
• Novel therapies, including medications and
brain stimulation treatments; and,
• Personalized medicine, which uses genetic analysis
to ensure that we offer the right treatment the first time.

“ For nearly 20 years, persistent major depression stripped the colour from my world. I turned to CAMH and tried everything to get well again. Finally I am responding very well to magnetic seizure therapy. It has given me my life back.” Jane Webber, one of the first people in the world to receive the pioneering treatment from CAMH’s Temerty Centre for Therapeutic Brain Intervention
16
We will stop mental illness from destroying lives
$50M
What many people think of as a personal struggle is actually a societal call to arms. At CAMH,we believe that education will break down stigma and discrimination, equip health-care professionals, and change the way we all respond to mental illness.
17
Already home to one of the largest psychiatric
training programs in the world, CAMH is poised
to revolutionize mental health education. We
have an increasing ability – and need – to better
train health-care professionals across all fields to
recognize, assess and stream patients into the
proper channels for treatment and recovery.
We must remain a magnet for the best and the
brightest to work at CAMH, while at the same
time educating knowledgeable professionals
who will work at hospitals and in communities
across Canada.
We take a leadership role in driving social
change. We are the outspoken champions
for people living with mental illness, and
we will continue to lead the fight for social
justice, health equity and inclusion.
With your help, we can stop the devastation
mental illness brings – to people, to families
and to our society.
18
To stop mental illness from destroying lives, the Breakthrough Campaign will support:Inspiring the next generation of mental health professionals and researchersWe must encourage young and talented health
professionals to choose mental health as their field
of study. CAMH trains 25 per cent of Canadian
psychiatrists and offers challenging learning
opportunities for nurses, social workers and other
associated professionals. With your support, we
will create more meaningful opportunities to recruit
and retain the best and brightest through chairs,
fellowships and scholar programs. Our training
programs will help take our expertise and deliver
it across the city and around the world.
Creating space for education, training and public programmingThe best opportunity for education is embedded in
the daily life of a hospital. We will develop facilities
adjacent to clinical spaces dedicated to onsite and
virtual training and education, including a conference
centre, theatre/auditorium, and student centre. Our
simulation centre will allow us to deliver programs to
health-care professionals, and to those who are often
on the frontline of mental health situations, including
teachers, the police and those in the justice system.
Establishing the Patient and Family Learning CentreThe journey to recovery can be confusing, with a myriad of options, decisions and approaches to
be considered. The Patient and Family Learning Centre will be a nexus for information, support and
personalized advice to help patients and their families fully engage in decisions regarding their care,
to understand signs and symptoms requiring urgent attention, and to help them navigate what can
often be multiple complex health systems.
Driving social changeCAMH is leading the discussion about mental illness and addiction, and providing instrumental support
to provincial and Canadian efforts to build capacity, coordinate services, build public awareness and
engagement, and directly affect public policy. We see this as a critical role to achieving our goals as a
hospital, as a research facility and as a champion for health equity, social justice and inclusion.
19
CAMH is leading the implementation of a significant portion of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Mental Health and Addiction Strategy
48,281 visits to online courses
CAMH trains 25% of the psychiatrists in Canada and 50% in Ontario
20,000 professionals participate in CAMH’s continuing education and training courses each year
78,456 people participated in CAMH public events in 2012/13
“ CAMH has had an amazing effect on our entire family. Colin learned how to describe how he feels and control how he reacts. Thanks to CAMH’s help, our family is so strong and close. I will be forever grateful for the care and support we received.”Cheryl Marsh, whose son Colin began acting out at home and at school at age 9. Colin and his mother participated in CAMH’s Coping Power group treatment program for children and their families

be a catalyst to breakthrough
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is more than a hospital. It’s a catalyst for change.
Together, we have shown the world that huge advances in mental health are not only possible, they are imminent. The transformation underway has allowed CAMH to leap ahead to reach those who need us, to strengthen our innovative care, and to create the spaces necessary for care and recovery.
Because our donors and volunteers have set a new standard in philanthropic leadership, we have created hope and a belief that change is possible.
The Breakthrough Campaign will accelerate our momentum. We call on all members of our community to continue this important work, and for new leaders to join us.
We will not stop now – there is significant promise ahead of us. Join us on the journey.
21
“ The Transforming Lives Campaign was our awakening. Now is the time for our Breakthrough. We will improve the lives of thousands of people and drive the social change necessary to impact millions more. We must address the epidemic of mental illness, now. Join us in changing lives.”
