Roseneath Theatre

presents…

On February 20, students in grades 2-5 had the opportunity to experience the play, La Maleta (The Suitcase). The play is the story of Roca, a ten-year-old refugee who escapes her native Colombia clutching her suitcase - inside which she believes her grandmother is hiding. Struggling to adapt to a new city, a new school and a new way of life, Roca befriends Paz, a boy with a secret who is being bullied by their classmates. Opening the suitcase leads them to embark on an adventure where Roca finds the courage, hope and strength to adapt to her new home. Teachers prepared students with various activities that were done in the classroom before the show. Connections to the curriculum include language arts, social studies, empathy, respect, integrity, immigration, imagination, bullying and English language learners. Preparing for the Pam Am

games

Barb Gibson, a broadcast producer as well as a parent in our community, spoke recently with many of our grade 2 and 3 students during their Media Literacy class. She was a critical member of the team that created the major promotional video for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan American games. She gave a fascinating presentation about the production of the video and role she played. Check out Toronto - Pan Am Games - INVADE Commercial

Carnival comes to Cameron With the organization and hard work of Mme Khalil, teachers and grade 4 & 5 leaders, Cameron celebrated Carnival again this year. This winter tradition began in Quebec back in 1894. Children enjoyed the outdoors with lots of fun and games. To read more about this winter celebration, please see the link below to the official website. http://carnaval.qc.ca/en/about/history/

Lunar New Year

Gong Xi Fa Cai Gong Hei Fat Choi

Lunar New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the New Year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. Traditionally for the Chinese, New Year was the most important festival on the calendar. In preparation for the holiday, homes are thoroughly cleaned. Ritual sacrifices of food and paper icons are offered to gods and ancestors. Elders give out money to children.

February is African Heritage

Month African Heritage Month is a time for TDSB staff and students to learn about and pay tribute to the many ways in which Black Canadians and people of the African Diaspora have helped shape our society, and to recognize the invaluable contributions they have made to our province, country and world. Throughout the month of February, TDSB schools will engage in local initiatives, and participate in a variety of community events that reflect this history of a people and the countless triumphs and struggles they have experienced over hundreds of years. Learn more at www.tdsb.on.ca to see what schools are doing to reflect, celebrate and bring to life the rich legacy of the African Diaspora for our diverse local school communities.

Late Arrival

If you are contacting the school via telephone or are arriving late, please note that we do not answer the telephone or doorbell during O ’Canada. You MUST sign in your child at the office otherwise they will be marked absent without a reason and you will be called. Ensuring you arrive on time, will avoid any confusion.

Pancake Breakfast

On February 12th, Cameron school community and

our local community had the opportunity to share breakfast with family and friends. It was great to see so many families at our breakfast! Hosted at the school, this event has its roots in Shrove Tuesday, the last day before the season of Lent observed by many Christians. A great big thank you goes out to Starbucks at Avondale Ave. and Yonge St. for providing all of the coffee, cups and condiments. A special thank you goes out to the new manager Sarah Hunter, who was most gracious and supportive in donating to this event. This event couldn’t take place without the support of our all of our staff at the school, from set up to clean up and everything in between! This takes a real team effort. Thank you to everyone for your help.

TDSB Summer Music Camps

Enrich your child’s summer vacation with music camp. Through three unique programs - Summer Sounds, DownTown Strings and Toronto Summer Music Camps - the TDSB offers band, strings and orchestral experiences for students from grades 3-9. Registration opens March 5.
