HOME – SCHOOL CONTACT
CONTACTO CASA – COLEGIO
We aim to work together, with teachers and parents forming a solid team, so that the children in our care will get the maximum benefit from their educational experiences.
v We send a written report home at the end of each term, outlining the academic progress and individual
achievements of each child. These written reports cover the curriculum objectives outlined in this
handbook. Your child’s progress will be graded as ‘Beginning with support’ ‘Developing’, ‘Good’, ‘Very
good’ and ‘Excellent’. It is to be expected that most children will achieve ‘Good’ in most areas; some
children will achieve ‘Very good’ or ‘Excellent’ in some areas, whilst others may get a combination
including ‘Beginning with support’ and ‘Developing’ in some areas. In order to maximise the benefit of any
additional support it is vital that this is mirrored at home.
v We will request an appointment if we are concerned about any aspect of your child’s education, so that
we can discuss with you the best way to support their learning. Even if we do not request an appointment,
and your child is obviously progressing well, we would ask you to make at least 2 appointments over the
course of the school year. Exchanging information will always help us to extend even the most able of
pupils.
v From October parents can request a meeting with their child’s teachers at 4:30 pm. by telephoning the
Reception Desk in advance to make an appointment, to discuss the child’s social and academic progress.
Translators are available for parents who do not speak English or Spanish – please indicate whether you
need a translator when you book the meeting.
v Staff are always available at the end of the school day for a quick informal chat when you pick up your
child, unless, of course, they are already in a meeting with another parent.
v For those fortunate parents who have free time during the week, we also have a Voluntary Parents’
Association, which offers parents the opportunity to work alongside the teachers in class and help with
special events in school. Although experience has shown that parental presence is counterproductive in
Nursery and Reception classes, Foundation Stage parents are welcome to come in as voluntary parents in
Year 1 – Year 6.

THE WEEKLY ROUTINES
LAS RUTINAS DE LA SEMANA
The children in Year 1 can play in the front ‘Pirate Ship Playground’
from 8:30 and when the bell goes at 9:10 they come into class after lining up at the doors outside the
Year 1 classrooms. For a small fee, children needing to be dropped off between 8:00am and 8:30 are
welcome to use our Ludoteca service. For safety reasons, children must not be left unsupervised in the
playground before 8:30am. It is very important that students arrive on time in the mornings to follow
routines early and not lose class time.
Things to bring in the bag:
v Overall for messy activities
v Foolscap size folder
v Change of clothes
v Homework (in the folder on Monday, if they need to be handed in)
v A small healthy snack (almuerzo). This should be a piece of fruit or a small sandwich. As we eat
at 12:15 they do not need a large snack! SWEETS AND CHOCOLATE SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT
INTO SCHOOL!
v No toys or cards should be brought to school.
Bags go home every day, and on Fridays the folders go home with some of their work and any letters.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THEIR WORK AND THE LETTERS OUT OF THEIR FOLDER AND SHARE THEM
WITH YOUR CHILDREN EVERY WEEK. They can tell you what they are learning about, how hard they are
working and what we are doing at school! This helps them to feel proud of doing good work and
encourages them to always do their best.
On THURSDAYS the children should come to school wearing their P.E. uniform. On cold days they can
wear the school tracksuit for P.E.
At home time (4:30 pm) the children can be collected from Lynne, Vanessa or Roanne’s classrooms at
4:30pm. Children needing to stay later will be accompanied to the Ludoteca from 17:00 onwards.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
DIETAS ESPECIALES
If children have been suffering from stomach problems a special bland diet
for that day can be requested at the school office. Please let us know by
sending an email or by phoning before 10:00 am. If your child has specific
dietary requirements due to allergies, food intolerances or because of religious
customs and beliefs, please specify this on the school Enrolment Form and again at the beginning of the
year at the Reception Desk or as soon as a specific dietary requirement arises during the year.
ILLNESSES, ALLERGIES AND MEDICINES
LAS ENFERMEDADES, LAS ALERGIAS Y LAS MEDICINAS
If children are sick and are not going to attend school, we ask the parents to inform the school before
10:00 a.m. To ensure the security of all children it is essential that there is good communication
between home and school so we know where all children are at all times.
Whilst children need to be prepared for everyday life and should attend school despite suffering from a
slight cold or feeling a little unwell, if the child does not feel well at school, their attendance will not be
a positive experience. However, routines are also important for children, and as parents, it is up to you
to apply your own criteria and judgement when deciding whether or not to send your child to school if
they have a slight cold. Dalsy (ibuprofen) or Apiretal (paracetamol) should not be administered as
preventative medicines if the child does not already have a temperature. It is not advisable to bring
your child to school if he or she has a temperature in the morning, as it is probable that he or she will
only get worse during the course of the day. We would also like to point out that if the school
telephones a parent or guardian to inform them that the child is ill or has developed a temperature
during the day, it is best to come and collect them as soon as possible.
The school has a qualified nurse on the premises, who will administer all medications and attend to the
needs of the pupils during the school day. However, we have been informed by the Central Medical
Services that no members of staff at school should administer medication with the exception of those
medications required by children with chronic or long-term conditions. Should your child fall into this
category, you should contact the school nurse and complete the necessary paperwork, which can be
found on the school website.
IMPORTANT: In the case of your child needing medicine during the school day, please carry out the
following procedure:
Children who go by bus: All medicine must be given directly to the bus monitor by the adult in charge.
The bus monitor will then hand in this medicine to the school Reception Desk.
Children who go by car: All medicine must be taken directly to the school Reception Desk by the adult
in charge.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST MEDICINE BE LEFT IN THE CHILDREN´S SCHOOL BAGS
CONTAGIOUS ILLNESSES LAS ENFERMEDADES CONTAGIOSAS Please inform the school straight away if your child is suffering from a contagious illness such as chicken pox,
mumps, German measles and conjunctivitis etc. so we can act accordingly. If a child is suffering from a
contagious illness he or she must stay at home until the contagious phase has passed.
SCHOOL MEDICAL INSURANCE
SEGURO MÉDICO ESCOLAR
An emergency medical service is employed by the school to attend to more serious accidents that might take place during the school day. If the doctor needs to be called to school due to an incident involving a child, the
parents will be contacted immediately. This service, covered by our school insurance, also includes a follow-up
visit by the doctor once a week to check up on any children treated during the previous week.
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
LOS CUMPLEAÑOS EN EL COLEGIO Children are always welcome to celebrate their birthday at
school. Birthday parties will take place on Fridays. Parents
can send biscuits to share between the children as well as juice or flavoured milk if you wish. Juice or
milk should be provided in individual cartons. Cakes and sweets are not allowed.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT REFUERZO POSITIVO
CERTIFICATES CARTIFICADOS
The children get happy faces for good work, making an effort, good behaviour and for helping others. For every 10 happy faces they get a certificate. The children are very motivated by this positive reinforcement of desired behaviour and feel very proud when their certificates are celebrated in front of their peers. Please celebrate their achievements at home too. Why not create a place to display their certificates for all the family to see and share in their success? Occasionally, where positive reinforcement is not working to correct inappropriate behaviour, the teacher may send home a note explaining what has happened. We appreciate parents working with us as a team to help the children understand how to behave appropriately and these notes need to be signed by the child themselves, by a parent and then returned to the teacher, so the child knows that the teacher and his/her parents are working together and are aware of the situation.
ASSEMBLY ASEMBLEA Every Friday afternoon we have an assembly time for Key Stage 1 where Years 1 and 2 meet together. Each week a different teacher and their class lead the assembly where they may share some work from that week, sing a song, talk about a festival etc. At the assembly we also sing Happy Birthday to the children and teachers who have had a birthday that week, and ‘Well Done’ certificates are given out to two children per class to praise particular achievements of that week.

HOMEWORK DEBERES
HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME COMO AYUDAR EN CASA Even if you don’t speak or read English this does not mean you cannot show an interest and support your child with his or her homework. Most of that which we send in English and Maths can easily be worked out by a non-English speaking adult with a dictionary and by looking at the examples provided. Maths can just as easily be practiced in Spanish, or any other language spoken at home. At the beginning of the year it is to be expected that the children will need some help with their homework. It is best to distribute the homework over the whole weekend – by doing a little each day. With the amount we send home it should not be necessary to do more than 10 minutes each time, plus a short reading session before going to bed each night. It is essential to provide a quiet and organized space where your child can work at home. After Christmas we would hope that you will notice your child demonstrating greater independence and initiative in the way in which they approach their homework. In Year 1 all homework is handed out on a FRIDAY. All the homework is thoroughly explained in class. Homework provides an important opportunity to reinforce your child’s understanding of the work covered that week and supports their development as well as promoting good study habits. The children should return their homework every Monday so that their teachers can mark it and send it back home the following Friday. In the first term English and Maths homework is sent home, along with a library book that your child can share with you. This book is one that they have chosen by themselves and we do not expect them to read it as there are many different levels. This is a book for your child to enjoy looking at with you. After Christmas, in the second term, the children will also bring a levelled reading book, usually from the Oxford Reading Tree series, which is one we expect them to be able to read to you out loud with only a little help with some words. There is a ‘Reading Record’ to be filled in with a short comment or happy face to let the teachers know how they coped with reading this book. In the third term the Spanish department also send homework on Fridays. This is usually writing a short list of words, or a few simple sentences about a topic they are studying. If you have any problems or questions about homework, please make an appointment with your class teacher.
MATHS
MATEMÁTICAS
Every other Friday your child will have Maths homework, based on the work done in class that week so they can reinforce and practise what they have learned. We also recommend playing games such as parchís, dominoes etc. ENGLISH INGLÉS Your child will have English homework to do every other week based on the work done in class. This homework is thoroughly explained before the children take it home each Friday. The children should be able to do the homework unaided, but it would be beneficial if you could encourage them, and if it is a handwriting or letter formation task, please make sure they are forming the letters correctly. You could also improve your own English, playing games like “I spy” with your child.
READING-LIBRARY LECTURA-BIBLIOTECA It is not vital for you as the parent to understand every word when listening to your child read. The most important thing is to show an interest and put aside some time every day to share an enjoyment of books together. Nor should you expect your child to be able to translate word for word the books they read in English. The children will start taking books home from our Library as from September. These books might not always be at their level as they will be books of their choice but we should encourage these choices as good readers
become competent from an initial LOVE of books. The books they take home from January are leveled as part of the reading scheme. As long as your child does not find the level of vocabulary frustrating you should not be concerned if there are some words that they do not understand. You can ask them questions (in any language) to help their understanding. For example, “Where is the story set?” “Who are the main characters?” “What happens at the beginning of the story?” etc. All children will be given a red folder to take their class library book home and return it. As they have finished reading the book, they can bring it back to class in the folder and change it for another book. If any of these books are lost at home, they can be replaced by any other children’s picture book in English which you may have, it does not need to be replaced by the same book or even a new book.
Every Friday starting in January your child will get a book to take home. Please make sure that your child has ample opportunity and a quiet place to read along with you. This book must be returned on Monday morning as other groups will need to start reading this book. It is vital that good reading habits are modelled at home and that the children have access to quality reading books in both English and Spanish.
v Buy books for your children at the book fairs organised at school
v Ask family and friends to buy book tokens as birthday and Christmas gifts
v Take your child to join the local public library and go regularly v Encourage your child to exchange books with their friends v Join a book club v
Not all children fall naturally into the habit of being avid and enthusiastic readers from a young age but there are ways of encouraging an enjoyment in books.
v Read and/or tell your child a bedtime story every night v Children love to collect things – start collecting a series of books … the same publisher, the same author,
on a theme … v Boys especially, often prefer factual, special interest or information books – build up a reference library
based on the science and humanities topics we study at school
v Take your child to book shops or other venues which organise fun activities and events which encourage young readers
HELP WITH MATHS SCHOOL WORK AYUDA CON EL TRABAJODE MATEMÁTICAS DEL COLEGIO Mathematics is one of the most important subjects that your child studies at school. Numbers are all around us and even if you don’t feel you are a mathematics genius yourself, there is plenty that you can do. Parents are sometimes reluctant to help their children with their maths for fear of doing things in the wrong way. However, children do really benefit when parents take a keen interest in their mathematical learning. Positive attitudes about maths will reinforce learning. A positive attitude is important in encouraging your child to think as mathematicians.
HOW TO HELP WITH MATHS AT HOME COMO AYUDAR CON LAS MATEMÁTICAS EN CASA Maths teaching today aims to help children develop a range of strategies so that they can solve problems in the most efficient way. Teaching is often very practical with a high focus on mental calculation and children are encouraged to discuss their work with classmates and their teacher.
BASIC MENTAL STRATEGIES ESTRATEGIAS BÁSICAS PARA EL CÁLCULO MENTAL Throughout year 1 we work to continue developing their basic mental maths strategies. We begin by revising place value, number bonds, and counting. Mental maths strategies are practised in our maths lessons every week and are a vital part of your child’s true understanding of the value of numbers and the mathematical concepts taught and progress in this area signifies the increased ability to apply their knowledge and understanding to solve simple problems.
