LIVING A LIFE FILLED WITH THANKFULNESS

Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me (Matt 25:40 NKJV). Ruth went to her mailbox and there was only one letter. She picked it up and looked at it before opening, but then she looked at the envelope again. There was no stamp, no postmark, only her name and address. She read the letter: Dear Ruth: I'm going to be in your neighborhood Saturday afternoon and I'd like to stop by for a visit. Love Always, Jesus Her hands were shaking as she placed the letter on the table. Why would the Lord want to visit me? I'm nobody special. I don't have anything to offer. With that thought, Ruth remembered her empty kitchen cabinets. Oh my goodness, I really don't have anything to offer. I'll have to run down to the store and buy something for dinner. She reached for her purse and counted out its contents. Fifteen dollars and forty cents. Well, I can get some bread and cold cuts, at least. She threw on her coat and hurried out the door. A loaf of French bread, a pound of sliced turkey, and a carton of milk...leaving Ruth with a grand total of twelve cents to last her until Monday. Nonetheless, she felt good as she headed home, her meager offerings tucked under her arm. Hey lady, can you help us, lady? Ruth had been so absorbed in her dinner plans, she hadn't even noticed two figures huddled in the alleyway.

MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | CALVARY BIBLE CHURCH, HANOVER | SEPTEMBER 2017

  • A man and a woman, both of them dressed in little more than rags. Look lady, I ain't got a job, ya know, and my wife and I have been living out here on the street, and, well, now it's getting cold and we're getting kinda hungry and, well, if you could help us. Lady, we'd really appreciate it. Ruth looked at them both. They were dirty, they smelled bad, and frankly, she was certain that they could get some kind of work if they really wanted to. Sir, I'd like to help you, but I'm a poor woman myself. All I have is a few cold cuts and some bread, and I'm having an important guest for dinner tonight and I was planning on serving that to Him. Yeah, well, okay lady, I understand. Thanks anyway. The man put his arm around the woman's shoulders, turned and headed back into the alley. As she watched them leave, Ruth felt a familiar twinge in her heart. Sir, wait! The couple stopped and turned as she ran down the alley after them. Look, why don't you take this food. I'll figure out something else to serve my guest. She handed the man her grocery bag. Thank you lady. Thank you very much! Yes, thank you! It was the man's wife, and Ruth could see now that she was shivering. You know, I've got another coat at home. Here, why don't you take this one. Ruth unbuttoned her jacket and slipped it over the woman's shoulders. Then smiling, she turned and walked back to the street--without her coat and with nothing to serve her guest. Thank you lady! Thank you very much! Ruth was chilled by the time she reached her front door, and worried too. The Lord was coming to visit and she didn't have anything to offer Him. She fumbled through her purse for the door key. But as she did, she noticed another envelope in her mailbox. That's odd. The mailman doesn't usually come twice in one day. Dear Ruth: It was so good to see you again. Thank you for the lovely meal. And thank you, too, for the beautiful coat. Love Always, Jesus The air was still cold, but even without her coat, Ruth no longer noticed.

  • World Awareness Conference We are excited to announce this years theme for the 2017

World Awareness Conference to be held Sept. 30 Oct. 8.

From Hanover to Hanoi - It is based on the great commission verse Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusa-lem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Bold added for emphasis). Note that, as believers in Christ, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, to be witness-es. We are to do that, locally (Hanover) and globally, (Hanoi), and everywhere in between. We hope to show you how you can do that. So mark you calendar to be challenged and learn what God may have you do as He empowers you. See you at the conference.

  • Elder Express One of the pleasant duties of eldership is attending missionary debriefings with our Missions Leadership Team. Debriefing sounds so formal for what goes on around the conference table for several hours or more. It is a time of laughter, concern, joy, and sometimes sorrow as we hear their stories of the mission field in far away places. Such was the case in August when the MLT and the elders met with C. and K., our missionaries to the Canary Islands. Canary Islands? That's like being a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands, right? Fun, sun, hanging loose, no worries, the island mentality! To listen to C. and K., in the 8 years they have ministered to the people of the Canaries, they have seen exactly ONE Canarian come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. From a worldly perspective, that's not a very good success ratio, however, once we know and understand the culture in which they serve, the effectiveness of their ministry becomes much clearer. While the individual is important in the islands, the key to any success is the access to ones family once that individual's trust and friendship is established. C. and K. will be here during the World Awareness Conference in October sharing their ministry with stories of how the islands are slowly bearing fruit in a culture way different than our own. And you thought culture was only in yogurt!

Leo Proppe visited our board meeting in August and presented the Welcome and Greeting Ministry's proposals to improve the aesthetics as well as effectiveness of CBC. There are two ways our church ministers to "our Jerusalem": the outward where we go to the streets of Hanover with the Gospel. The other is the inward ministry where the streets of Hanover come to us. The vision is to make CBC as "guest-friendly" as possible, from the parking spaces specially set aside for them to the initial contact with them by our ushers to the information and assistance around the building by those who serve in the Welcome Center to those who assist in finding seating in the

    UPCOMING EVENTS

sanctuary for our guests. You can help there by practicing the "CBC slide" and moving to the center of your pew if you are able to do so. As we "seek the lost and equip the found," it is important to 1) provide the best possible information about who we are through our web-site, social media, and E-mails (pre-presence), 2) provide the best information about what we do and why we do it through our worship service, our children's ministries, signage, internal directions, and the accessibility to leadership (presence), and 3) our follow-up with those who visit us in a timely manner with a sincere concern for their feedback about their experience (post-presence). It's a big challenge, and it's our belief that under Leo's direction, one that will make an impact on the Hanover community for Jesus Christ. Why not hop on board the Welcome and Greeting Ministry train by offering to help the team!

September is the kickoff of the new ministry year at CBC. Adult Sunday School resumes again September 3. We encourage you to commit to attend a class of your choosing at 9:30 every Sunday morning. You can find a list of available topics and room numbers at the Welcome Center. Make it YOUR small group! Awana begins Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 on September 6. Better yet, why not commit to serve the children of CBC and the surrounding area of Hanover? The benefits far outweigh the effort. It's time to "move on up" in our children's Sunday School classes as well as Children's Church on Sunday mornings. And teen group is firing on all cylinders.

It is truly a privilege to serve with you. Stop by and say hi after the morning service in the atrium. We'd love to pray for you!
