March 2018 Calvary Connection Billy Graham spoke to more people in live audiences than anyone in history—nearly 215 million people. In many ways, he became America’s pastor (if not the world’s). He counseled presidents and comforted a nation in the midst of tragedy. Graham was the first religious leader to lie in honor at the Rotunda — only three other private civilians have received that honor. He was a dynamic tent revivalist with a compassionate heart. Following his recent death, I came across some quotes of his that spoke to me and, I hope, will speak to you as well. Billy Graham could have done just about anything, perhaps even become President many believed, but he saw that the most important thing he could do was tell others about Jesus. “The greatest need in the world is the transformation of human nature. We need a new heart that will not have lust and greed and hate in it. We need a heart filled with love and peace and joy, and that is why Jesus came into the world. He died on the cross to make peace between us and God and to change us from within by his Spirit. He can change you, if you will turn to him in repentance and faith.” Billy Graham did not consider himself to be a particularly gifted preacher but instead focused on the great message his was called to share. His first formal sermon lasted eight minutes and included all four sermons he had prepared. “I am not a great preacher, and I don’t claim to be a great preacher. I’ve heard great preaching many times and I wished I was one of those great preachers. I’m an ordinary preacher, just communicating the gospel in the best way I know.” As a child, Billy Graham went to church “grudgingly” and we are told the minister at his family’s church reminded him of a mortician. “I don’t ever remember not going to church. If I had told my parents I didn’t want to go, they would have whaled the tar out of me [but] I couldn’t stand going to church until I accepted Christ as my Savior.” Billy Graham served as a church for only one year. He recalls his most significant accomplishment being helping them to change the name of Western Springs Baptist Church to Village Church since there were few Baptists in the area. “We are selling the greatest product on earth. Why shouldn’t we promote it as effectively as we promote a bar of soap? We used every modern means to reach the ear of the unconverted, and then punched them straight between the eyes with the gospel.” Age and declining health forced Billy Graham to recede from the public over the last decade or so. That may mean the younger generation has forgotten (or never knew) America’s preacher. It’s a life story worth studying. Billy Graham had a profound impact on Christianity in the 20th century. His single-minded focus on sharing the gospel took him around the world. His willingness to try new methods and explore new technologies should be an inspiration to church communicators everywhere. “I realize that my ministry would someday come to an end. I am only one in a glorious chain of men and women God has raised through the centuries to build Christ’s church and to take the gospel everywhere.”

March 2018

Calvary Connection Billy Graham spoke to more people in live audiences than anyone in history—nearly 215 million people.

He died on the cross to make peace between us and God and to change us from within

by his Spirit. I’ve heard great preaching many times

and I wished I was one of those great preachers. I’m an ordinary preacher, just communicating the gospel in the best way I know.”

As a child, Billy Graham went to church “grudgingly” and we are told the minister at his family’s church reminded him of a mortician.

“I don’t ever remember not going to church. If I had told my parents I didn’t want to go, they would have whaled the tar out of me [but] I couldn’t stand going to church until I accepted Christ as my Savior.”

Billy Graham served as a church for only one year. He recalls his most significant accomplishment being helping them to change the name of Western Springs Baptist Church to Village Church since there were few Baptists in the area.

“We are selling the greatest product on earth. Why shouldn’t we promote it as effectively as we promote a bar of soap? We used every modern means to reach the ear of the unconverted, and then punched them

hearted • Coaching you and affirming you as you make

prayers of confessions and repentance • Prayer for healing – physical healing, healing of

emotional wounds, healing of relationships • Prayer for restoration of joy • Prayers for release, deliverance and protection • Prayer for specific blessing • Assisting anyone who desires to profess faith

Daylight Saving Time Begins on

Sunday, March 11

Please remember to turn your clocks FORWARD one hour on

Saturday night.

If you have not already heard, I have taken on the role of children’s ministry coordinator. This entails overseeing any ministries we have for children from birth through upper elementary ages. This is definitely a work in progress, as it will take some time to work out our core purposes and goals. Over the next several months, you should be hearing about ways in which our church seeks to serve the entire family, and ways that you may become involved in this mission. Families with children are the future of God’s church and are worthy of our time and energy. Right now we are concentrating on finding drivers for our church bus. We have already had six people volunteer to drive either on Wednesday nights for Awana or on Sunday mornings for Sunday School and children’s church, but we need to add more names to this roster. Many hands make light work, or in this case, light driving responsibilities! We also need people who would be willing just to ride along on the bus route in order to add another layer of safety to this ministry. Wednesday night routes run from about 5:40-6:15 and 8:00-8:30. Sunday morning routes run from about 8:25-9:00 and 11:30-12:00. The same person does not necessarily need to do both times. Even if you can only drive or ride occasionally, your service would be greatly appreciated. Children’s church (which runs concurrently with the worship service) is rapidly growing under the teaching of Pastor Juan. This ministry is geared towards children in elementary school, and we have had great attendance. Thanks to all those who have volunteered to bring snacks to start off our time together. Our children can concentrate better when they are not hungry, so that after feeding the body, we may feed the soul. Calvary has a vision of being a multi-generational church. If you agree with that vision, then we need to put action behind our words. Please talk to me about how you may serve our Lord and Savior, through service to this future generation. Juli Whitehead

Kid’s Pantry

Thank you for all of your help with the Head Start Kid’s Pantry! Our hope is that we can support these families in our community, pray for them, and form connections in order to share the gospel. Our goal is to provide a bag of food to the families interested at least two-times per month. A list of needed food items is available in the office or foyer. Items do not have to be the name brand, but we do want those specific items so as to keep the bags alike. Food donations can be placed in the container in the foyer. We are accepting donations of food as well as monetary donations. If you have any questions or require more information, please contact Sarah Roberts (402) 209-0664 or [email protected]
