christy has been an employee of Calvary Church for 3 years. She works as an administrative assistant in the Worship Ministry. When Festival of Lights season arrives she can be found working with volunteers, helping with stage crew, assisting in scheduling practices and other kinds of behind-the-scene work.

‘tis the seasonfestival of lights is upon us once again. who will you invite this year?Calvary’s annual Festival of Lights production is a great opportunity to share the hope of Jesus with your friends and family. While some in our lives will gladly take us up on the chance to enjoy a Broadway-style production, with others we may struggle to even start the conversation. With this in mind, we’ve asked some of Calvary’s staff members to share how they invite their family and friends, people they have lovingly prayed for and long to see come to know Jesus, to join them at Festival of Lights.

steve gibson, executive pastorMy family and I offer tickets to our friends at no charge. This breaks down the barrier of needing to go online or provide pay-ment once we’ve extended the invitation. Often our kids are involved in the production, so people are eager to see them take part in the show.

sharon Kaiser, asst. director, local outreach ministriesWe encourage our kids to invite their friends, and sometimes they’ll sleep over afterwards. It’s an easy way to get our kids think-ing about evangelism at an early age.

jake Boerman, asst. director of evangelism & outreachA few of the things I’ve learned: 1) Don’t be overly “Dutch.” Look, I’m just as Dutch as the next person here in West Michigan but inviting someone to an event with you and then asking them to pay is a bad idea. (I’ve learned this one the hard way.) Awkward! 2) Have a good idea about what the program is going to be like and be open and honest in presenting it. Know it’s all about Jesus and be willing and prepared to discuss it with who you invite. This can be scary but rest assured that when we step out, God shows up. 3) Just ask! Sure, some people you ask might say no but you will never know for certain if you don’t extend the invitation. Just the asking alone may open up opportunities for God to move and help in building that relationship for the future.

sara tindall, middle school FacilitatorDinner afterwards is a great way to continue the conversations Festival begins. Plus, it makes the whole thing feel less like a transaction and more like a night out.

mark Kotlarczyk, director, technical servicesLast year, my kids and I put tickets in a geocache on site at Calvary and uploaded the coordinates to a geocaching site we’re involved with. They were found and passed along to people who could use them.

Calvary Church Festival of Lights 2013Calvary’s 2013 Festival of Lights is a great place to introduce your friends to the hope of Christ. Begin praying now about who you might bring.

This year’s production, Christmas at Hollington Hall, is set almost a century ago in a British manor house as preparations for a grand Christmas party are underway. While the servants are deco-rating, and Lady Wellington is auditioning entertainment, another member of the family struggles with an emptiness that he cannot explain. With

guests arriving and festivities beginning, his search for peace leads him to an unlikely friend-ship that opens his heart to the true joy of Christmas.

Accept Lady Wellington’s invitation to join the family for Christmas at Hollington Hall, an evening of timeless music, a 100+ voice choir, an amazing dramatic cast and over 200,000 twinkling lights.

Performances will be Decem-ber 6-8 and 13-15 at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.

Tickets ($6 and $7) are avail-able at startickets.com. This year, we are happy to also have our own box office. You may purchase tickets on Sundays in the Calvary Café and Tuesdays through Fridays at the recption desk (during office hours only).

looKing For a Community oF singles under 50?

Gil’Christ, which means Servants of Christ, meets every Sunday morning of the year (except Easter) at 11:15am in room 211 (near the Chapel). Our class is a ministry for singles under 50, designed to build family ties as we navigate our way from the cross to the Kingdom. We provide Biblical teaching and guidance in order to foster spiritual growth. We also seek to create an atmosphere of fellowship and community in order to care for, support, encourage, serve and provide accountability for one another.

We gather often both in small and large groups. We offer encouragement, prayer support and service opportunities as we work together to form lasting, meaningful friendships. We have small group Bible

studies, fellow-ship events, service projects and plenty of spontaneous gatherings as we strive to do “life together.”

Our class time is committed to expository teaching of God’s Word with an emphasis on voluntary class participation in a discussion-style setting.

As the scrip-ture teaches us, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” Mark 10:45a, our class has helped members move, helped with yard work, volunteered for church projects, prayed for specific needs of our members and we are open to helping in any way God leads or as oppor-tunities arise.

Nancy Samra, the teacher of the class, shared how the class ministered to her during George’s last days. They helped them move a couple of times, they came to sing to George. He was not speaking at that time and had dementia, but after singing Amazing Grace, he spoke the word, “won-derful.” They prayed and cared for them in a mighty way during this most difficult time.

If you are looking for a class that loves God and loves people, come to room 211 on Sunday morning at 11:15!

Are you new to Calvary? Are you finding it hard to navigate or get plugged in? Journey togeth-er with us for three weeks: Wednesdays, October 23, October 30 and November 6 in room 126, 5:15-6:30pm. We’ll enjoy gathering in an informal setting to meet others new to Calvary, share a meal together, meet staff, and learn more about Calvary. Feel free to jump in at any time. The classes repeat periodically throughout the year. RSVP to Elaine Lohroff ([email protected]) at ext. 5903.

In the chaotic and goal-oriented world in which we live, we want what God wants for ourselves and for our children. We want to facilitate an environment for successful Christian liv-ing as we all grow closer to the Lord. This is true of any of us: individuals with special needs, those who are high achievers, those who find themselves right where they need to be, and every-one in between. In the midst of creating an environment where we can thrive, we often set unattainable and unrealistic goals. If we take a step back and consider the smaller steps to get to where the Lord wants us, we will experience greater success and strides toward a well-lived life.

Tips on Goal Setting:1. Work from where you are, not from where you want to be. Don't set a goal for your child that's out-side of his or her developmental ability. And don't set a goal for yourself or your family that you know you don't have the time, ability, or resources to attain. These things don't magically resolve them-selves just because you've set a goal.

2. Choose a single area to focus on. You only have so much energy, patience, and concentration, so don’t spend it all in one place. You'll have a much greater chance of success than if you spread your-self too thin.

3. Pick the thing that's easiest, not necessarily the most important. Simple is smart, not silly. The goal you set should be the one you or your child has the most chance of attaining, not the one you most dream of achieving.

4. Break your goal into smaller steps. And then smaller ones. And then smaller still. Instead of mak-ing the overall task your first goal, set your first goal at completing one step.

5. Set short deadlines. You or your child's interest in goals that take months to measure can fade fast. Think of what you can do in a week, set that as a goal, and enjoy meeting a deadline for a change.

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Churchevery year, one hundred thousand of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world are persecuted for their faith in jesus. this persecution may come from the government authorities, their communities, or their families. For some, it touches their lives subtly and indirectly – through being refused a job, being fined or having property confiscated. For others, the pain is more obvious; they and their families are threatened, physically abused, injured or even killed for their faith. persecution may affect their ability to share their faith with others, to worship publicly, to gather with fellow Christians in large or small communities or even – in nations like north Korea – to hold a personal private faith in the lord.

the needs of these believers are countless, yet when asked, their number one request is for prayer. join us on sunday, november 10, to pray together for them and to learn how you can keep them in yourprayers day by day, moment by moment. just stop – whenever god lays the persecuted church on your heart – stand togeth-er and offer prayer!

Page 8: Calvary Life, November 2013

this month we’re tackling the sticky question many parents ask — “is my kid normal?” our hope is that you’ll find encouragement in knowing you’re not the only one who has dared to ask, and that you’ll be moved to turn to the Bible for parenting wisdom as you check the motivations behind your questioning.

we know this is a loaded question, but what do you do when a parent comes to you with this question?

B: I talk with many parents who call me up and ask, “What happened to my sweet child?” I know my mom had that same concern when I got into fifth or sixth grade. I became very inconsistent; sometimes I would burst out in anger without reason. I was less conversational; I remember my mom pointing that out. She would call up other par-ents and it’s funny because the par-ents she called who had boys said, “Oh that’s normal.” The parents she talked to who had girls said, “Wait, that sounds concerning.” Having spent 15 years working in student ministries and studying ad-olescent development, I’ve come to recognize adolescence is a unique time in life. It’s not an excuse for sinful behavior, but it is sometimes a reason behind why students act a certain way.

often when we’re wondering if a child is normal, it’s a question of development. do all kids grow at the same rate or do you notice that some develop aspects of their personality or body at a different pace?

B: You can see on the outside that kids are developing at dif-ferent rates, it’s the same way on the inside. Within the age group I work with, there can be a great difference between girls and boys especially, from their ability to hold a conversation to their views on life. It’s easy as a parent to want to com-pare your child to another person but we all develop differently and we need to be cognizant of that.

not every person who is asking this question is truly concerned with their child’s reading level for exam-ple. For some the concern is that their child doesn’t “look” or “behave” like other kids. is there is a differ-ence between asking is my child developing normally and is my child fitting in?

J: Yes, and I think as parents we need to take a look at our own motivations when assessing wheth-er or not our child is “normal.” If we’re concerned that our child isn’t as involved in sports for instance, we need to ask who we are allowing to define the norm for our family. As Christian parents, we need to step back from our culture’s idea of normal and ask what are God’s expectations. And if we don’t know

what God’s expectations are, how are we going to compare when the only sense of “normal” we have is the culture around us?

B: I’d like to take the question “Is my child normal,” and follow that up with another question, “Does it matter?” Piggybacking on Joel’s comments, if we’re taking the word normal and using the culture or society to define it, it doesn’t matter if your child is “normal” or not. It matters more that we’re helping our children to become more like Jesus. I think that is the better question.

J: It’s certainly not wrong to see that your child is struggling with vocabulary or math and wonder if they need extra assistance. Howev-er, as we’re comparing our children to each other, wondering if they have good social skills or are partic-ipating in the right activities, look-ing at Christian parents is a better gauge. It can be problematic to compare yourself to someone with whom you share different essential beliefs and then try to make your kids reach the same goals their kids are reaching. Conversely, when we as a family are living life in commu-nity with other believers, there is an iron sharpening iron effect that takes place in spurring each other on toward more godly behavior.

where do parents turn then when they’re wanting to seek after god’s goals for their child and not the world’s goals?

B: I think there is a biblical frame-work for us as parents to follow. We need to ask if we’re helping our children to grow in Christ, ask how are we training them up… but remember that we can’t control them. That’s the ultimate realiza-tion, that this is in God’s hands and not yours.

J: As a parent, do you know God’s expectations for your child and for you as a parent? One place to start is by becoming so familiar with the Bible that it just begins to pop up in your thinking. so maybe instead of “the happiest Baby on the Block” being the first words of wisdom that come into your head, rather it’s something from proverbs.

J: Yes, exactly. In fact, as we’re talking about this topic, Romans 12:2a comes to mind — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Automat-ically we see that we’re not to be normal according to the world’s standard or pattern, rather we’re to be transformed into God’s way of thinking. I think this means that we need to be reviewing with our child their choices and activities, reading the Bible and praying through our decisions. Again it’s learning what God’s expectations are and seeing the world from His perspective. As we spend more time seeking Him, He will give us the discernment we need to make some of these diffi-cult parenting decisions.

do you have examples of parents in your ministry whose kids struggled to fit in? how did you and the par-ents handle such situations?

B: Sometimes parents will call me because there’s trouble at home and they’re wondering if their kid is okay. The first thing I try to figure out is why they’re asking that question, to try and help them dig deeper. I know in my own life when I ask that question it’s a personal reflection on me. Sometimes it’s a pride issue, or insecurities in my own heart. The first question we need to ask as parents, and it’s a hard one, is what do I need to work on? Am I reflecting this issue on my child because there’s something in me that needs to change?

Second, modeled behavior is mold-ed behavior. If a parent says, “My kid never wants to go to Sunday School.” I ask, “Well do you go to Sunday School?” We need to ask ourselves, “Am I making the choic-es I want my kids to make?” That’s a tough question, but the behaviors my kids pick up on are always the ones they see in my own life, wheth-er good or bad.

i think this can be a discouraging conversation; parenting can be such an overwhelming endeavor. do you have some encouragement that we can leave parents with? does it help to know that other parents are ask-ing the same questions you are?

B: None of us are finished prod-ucts. While we’re on this earth God has a plan for our lives and that plan is to become more and more like Jesus. None of us are finished yet, our kids are in that process as well. God has patience with us, and we need to have patience with our kids. Second, we need to remem-

ber that there are a lot of changes, especially in the adolescent stage of life. It’s good to recognize what comes into play at that age and what kids are dealing with, emo-tionally and behaviorally as their brains develop. Understanding this can help kids to grow. Third, as we deal with this issue it’s important to reflect on our own lives. Maybe we’re asking this question because God wants us to grow and to teach us something, to become more like Him.

J: I think as you said earlier, it’s important to keep modeling, keep showing your kids what it’s like to become more like Christ. And re-member, the more familiar you are with the Bible, the more ready you are to battle with the armor of God when these temptations arise.

as a parent, one of the best resources you’ll find are other parents who are also pursuing god’s desire for their families. each january, Calvary offers a “Family road map” class designed to help you create spiritual goals and decide core values and milestones of responsibility for your family. if you’d like the opportunity to interact with other parents in the same boat as you, contact [email protected] for further details. ongoing parent-community groups are introduced at the end of the class for those looking for continued community.

Hey Kids! are you a member of the

James Gang?

This is a great year to join!In Calvary Kids commit our school-year to memorizing an

entire book of the Bible – James – one chapter a year. This links memorization to the context it was written in, goes deep instead

of broad, and builds on concepts and themes in each new chapter. This year is James chapter 5, a perfect place to join us!

Why the book of James? Because James addresses our cultural fix on information, and instead calls for a high level of responsibility to act on what we know. “Faith without deeds is dead.” (James 2:26) James is a short book, with an average of 22 verses each year…not bad! That gives ample time to dig deep, memorize and take action!

What tools do you provide? Parent packets are available for every family with the following tools:

1) Songs of the current chapter of James that year set to various styles of music to enhance memorization

2) Introduction to the book of James and dictionary of difficult words will help explain hard-to-understand words and con-cepts.

3) A list of serving opportunities to help families to “put their faith into action.”

4) End of the year celebration to recognize children who memo-rized that year’s chapter and completed five service projects.

As a ministry, when do you review these verses with children?

1) Our Wednesday night programming (Kids-N-Action) breaks down the memorization according to songs provided, and sings them at large group introduction each week. Kids-N-Action also provides incentives to keep kids motivated.

2) Our Children’s Choir LUMIN8 learns and professionally records the James memorization songs at the end of the year, and per-

forms a concert in the spring.

We must merely open our hearts to receive Him and His loving presence. Join us to discuss what God taught each of us through this book.

Drop off at the Yellow House Monday, December 2 through Friday, December 13, 8:30am – 5:00pm. Baskets will be delivered on Wednesday December 18. Thank you for bringing Christmas cheer to those in our Calvary Community who need encouragement. Merry Christmas!

You fear you won’t make it through. You fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, or the pain will never leave. Will this gray sky ever brighten? Yes! Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras; bold, brassy, and everwhere. Consider the Old Testament story of Joseph---tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned. But God wove what was meant for evil into good. God is in the business of redeeming the broken. He was then. He is still. Do you crave some hope for these tough times? Then, You’ll Get Through This by Max Lucado, is the message you need.

on the BooKshelFrecommended reading for novemberfound in the calvary library

After nearly dying of breast cancer in her twenties, Sarah Thebarge fled her successful career, her Ivy League education, and a failed relationship on the East Coast and started over in Portland, Oregon. She was hoping to quietly pick up the broken pieces of her life, but instead she met Hadhi and her daughters, and set out on an adventure she never anticipated. A Somali refugee abandoned by her husband, Hadhi was struggling to raise five young daughters in a culture she didn’t understand. When their worlds collided, Hadhi and the girls were on the brink of starvation in their own home, “invisible” in a neighborhood of strangers. The Invisible Girls reveals Sarah’s honest wrestling with God and how healing can come from pouring our broken selves out for others.

Author John Sheasby writes, “My father was strict and demanding, intolerant of my repeated failures to measure up to his expectations. As a result, I came to believe that my heavenly Father was equally strict, equally demanding and intolerant. In a last ditch effort to discover who this unpleasable God really was, I resigned from my pastoral ministry in Gweru, Zimbabwe, moved a travel trailer to a seaside resort on the Igoda River and sequestered myself there, determined-- like Jacob wrestling with the angel—not to give up until God blessed me with a new understanding of who he was.” In The Birthright, John Sheasby outlines the intense struggle that ended with his deliverance from the drudgery of being a servant to the joy of being a son.

The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our hours are Sunday, 9:15 - 11:15 am and Wednesday, 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher ([email protected]).

LIFE {TOGETHER}

We are so glad you have joined us to-day. We know there are many church-es you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here.

Perhaps this week you have experi-enced what a stormy place this world can be. At times our lives feel unpre-dictable and out of control.

The Apostle Peter knew all about that. He knew what it was like to fail and to feel defeat and he knew what it was like to suffer. But he also knew what it was like to walk on water.

This year at Calvary Church, we are studying Peter’s letters to the church. In them we see that Peter is telling us that hard times come and that life isn’t always easy, but that God is a refuge for each one of us.

While you are here we hope you will experience the grace and peace that can come from Jesus Christ — the same Jesus who helped Peter defy na-ture on the Sea of Galilee.
